- From Bureau Director to glorified inanimate carbon rod.
Winner of the FBC’s Worker of the Week Award ▇▇▇ weeks running.
Ever since I made my Threshold Kids video, I’ve wanted to tackle one of the other major mysteries from Control; The grim fate of former FBC director Broderick Northmoor and the nature NSC Power Plant.
Buckle up because this sure is a doozy.

Oh my gosh I never noticed I said it wrong. I can't do anything to correct it now but thanks for the heads up. Man that's going to bug me.

Also this is the second reactor. The first one didn't hold and you can its remnants in the quarry via the Jukebox. That's why the NSC has a 02 on it and the one in the quarry has 01 on it.
I did know about it being the second reactor but didn't realise that the first reactor ended up in The Formation.
It's great how you can go back to the game and find details you previously missed.
Can u say where it was in the formation? I actually didn't notice, and cant play the game right now 😅
@@UnNamedUNG if u stand at the central platform and you look toward the horizon...you will see some tubes connecting to something looking like NSC
Yeah this detail was scary. And they say the new NSC-02 has properties that prevent translocation... Unlike the last one 😨

That's what I said lol they did northmoor dirty. But I would love to somehow get into his chamber and fight him.
"Northmoor was all about power." An equally brutal one, if you think about it.
@@pintavodki what do you mean?
@@milliewilson1046 I mean, "power" as in "power reactor".
@@pintavodki oh my bad. Ewww what if noorthmores just been swimming around in the Bureaus poop this whole time and that's where the clog came from.
Unpopular opinion: perhaps putting Northmoor in the NSC *is* the most humane option. We know that Northmoor absorbed so much power and bound himself to too many powers that his temperature has become "unnatural" or "impossible" to the point he became nuclear.
Considering the size of the Oldest House transcends the confines of its outer appearance, the interior almost resembles a small city (when you consider the size of the Panopticon, the AWE staging areas in both Research an Investigation sectors and other larger areas). As Doctor Who would say: "it's bigger on the inside". Most industrialized cities need about 500-1500MW (megawats) of power on average (I looked it up :) ), and since the Oldest House is storing paranormal Altered Items, I would say the power usage is on the higher end of that scale. Since Northmoor is generating enough energy to power the Oldest House completely before the Hiss invasion (which means the Oldest House was fully staffed and operational), that means Northmoor is outputting enough power similar to a typical nuclear power plant.
Now, if Northmoor was set free, where would he go? His temperature and/or radiation output would be devastating to any city he may find himself in. He would poison entire populations as well as the wider environment. You can't throw him into the ocean as it would devastate the oceanic life. You can't exactly strap him on a rocket and launch him into space - that would raise the suspicions of the worldwide space agencies and then the FBC would have to answer a ton of questions. Plus, if Northmoor felt he was above the "typical rules", there's no way of knowing if he would even adhere to any strict conditions of his release and would probably go where he pleases. He may even try to strike back at the FBC.
And, if Northmoor died, there's no way of knowing if his body would cool down to "normal" temperatures in any reasonable amount of time.
In reality, Northmoor put the FBC in a position where they didn't know what to do with him. He was a danger to those around him as well as the NYC community. They needed somewhere to put him to keep everyone safe. Plus, they need to siphon off his energy output so as not to have too much buildup of pressure in the NSC.
Putting him in the NSC and siphoning the energy out of him is the most humane given the circumstances. It sounds awful...I absolutely agree. But given the circumstances, what choice did the FBC have?
Nah, launching him into space like you said was probably the best option, unless there’s a small town inside the NSC for him or something.
The Bureau would have to answer questions but, what’s anyone gonna do about it?
Great point.
I would also add that given the fact that he's nuclear, there's a possibility that his body might've caused a nuclear explosion if they had killed him.
@@scoroscopebjd6149 I can't really see how he'd get loaded into a space ship without melting it. Frankly how could he be interacted with at all without vaporising anyone who's in contact with him.
Also there is a chance he could just teleport back to earth since after all he teleported the NSC 01 away and NSC 02 that we see in game has special spacial anchors to prevent him from moving it
Also as a side note the energy extracted is the excess energy extracted as they cool him down so his actual power output is much much higher
The Oldest House isn't quite located in NYC, one of its' limbs is. The game shows it's connected to multiple different realities, and if we pay attention to a bunch of details, it's very likely that it's a modern incarnation of Ygdrassil.
I think that many American players often dissmiss the similarities between the house and Ygdrassil, or the NSC and Chernobyl's New Safe Confinement. But it's important to remember that Remedy Games is a Scandinavian based developer, so they'd be significantly more familiar with both of these things.
+within the rules of the oldest house, the nsc can be as far away from outside as they want
Given the Yggdrasil representation on the Nail slabs and the access to the Foundation, it's distinctly possible. Don't even get me started on Ahti the Dark Ocean/Janitor of the lake which by all indications is also Mimir's Wellspring...
I like the poetic justice of him becoming a glorified fuel rod. Seems like the board gave him a case of "Here's what you asked for, not what you wanted"
I think the worst possible outcome if hiss corrupted Northmoor and set him free would be that he is probably very much alive and combat ready. Not only he is passively dangerous, he very likely possesses some insane moves.
Before Jesse he was No 1. I don't even wanna know in what short time the world would have been over.
Wow, this thing completely went over my head when I was playing the main storyline. I didn’t even notice that NSC literally stood for Northmoor Sarcophagus Container. Brilliant video! I really loved your explanation and all the in-game documents you pulled to prove it. I’m pretty sure that’s exactly what Remedy had in mind. When you put it all together, it makes so much sense. Northmoor, despite being Trench’s predecessor and the first Board-appointed director, never attempts to contact the hotline at all (which I always found odd).
2:22 I'd imagine the main reason in-universe for the discrepancy here is because the existence of the Foundation of the Oldest House is supposed to be completely secret to all outside of the Director. Thus, any information about it needed to be expunged, and any Items that might have had a connection to the Foundation needed to have their origins "retconned" internally by the Bureau.
My exact thoughts
Was looking for this comment, exactly what I thought. They explain that the foundation was completely erased from the history of the Bureau. The document for the service weapon was obviously changed as to not mention the foundation.
You should definitely keep these kinds of control videos up, they’re super entertaining and informative on the lore. Great for people like me who can’t absorb everything.
Thank you. I’m glad you found the video helpful and entertaining!
I'm in the process of making another video on Control's lore right now. It will definitely be finished by the end of the month, though it should be done sooner. :)
In alam wake II, agent Estevez from the FBC, says approaching the end that "they could've sent more help to bright falls if it weren't for "THE BLACKOUT IN THE BUREAU" let that sink in for a while.
There was a chronal element to the interaction of the Dark Place and the Oldest House, which included the Hiss invasion and the Astral Leaking (in other words, the entirety of Control). Blackout can also refer to editing and lockdowns...
My idea is that the fbc is out of lockdown just rebuilding its forces due to the huge lose during the hiss invasion.
@@Valzer__ The fact is that the Bureau is refilling, restocking, re-mapping and re-securing whole sectors, including an entire department literally written into the Oldest House by Wake himself! Hell, they're probably still cleaning clocks...
A bit late, but you can use the term "blackout" to mean that you have no communications with someone. Not a literal electric blackout. As the external lockdown is enacted (and you have several Altered Items that can travel on waves, sound and cables), it is fair to assume that the blackout Estevez is alluding to is the entire events of Control, as we know that except for Ahti getting out and Jesse getting in, the Oldest House becomes fully isolated during a Lockdown.
We know that there is clearly a temporal asynchrony between the events of Alan Wake 2 and Control (AWE DLC matches Initiation 5), and the alarm for 3 years in the future that you get at the end of the DLC. Now, how can an alarm sound 3 years before the fact? This alarm is the same that we see Saga witnessing (the monitoring station saying "AWE in Progress" and sirens blaring), so clearly Control is happening at the same time that Alan Wake 2 (at least partially with the Dark Place, and at least partially with Bright Falls itself); therefore, the blackout in the bureau is simply the Lockdown to contain the Hiss. Like a temporal Threshold/Overlap. We also have no idea how long Control actually takes in real life and, after the end game, several characters allude to the fact that the Hiss are still everywhere and it will take a long time to clear every last one of them, in order to lift the External Lockdown. There will be no communications from field agents to HQ while this lockdown isn't lifted, I think it's Arish who states that it will take a long time to get everything up and running like before.
Or maybe my theory is wrong and there is something really bad going on for Control 2.
I always found the NSC to be the most disturbing and mysterious part of the game! Great video, I especially liked your connection to the chernobyl NSC. Clever! This game is probably the best original fiction in a long long time.
_That's, uh, a helluva demotion..._
Director, you are now demoted to battery.
Played this game and kinda figured out early on that Northmoor was the source of power but never really thought about it…but now that I have, it’s absolutely creepy. Dude is locked in the container forever. Also never saw the creepy thermal images either…must’ve missed those somehow. Yikes!
The thermal images are on monitors at the very top of the NSC
When I discovered this... revelation, I was absolutely blown away. Almost terrified looking the heat images. That's the most humane thing they could think?!
I love this game. I love this channel. I hope you grow a lot!
Possibly, siphoning away the heat to keep him cool.
they straight up say that they are cooling him done to prevent him from overheating while only taking the excess energy which kind of implies that he is basically turned into almost living fire and it implied he agreed to it
and ahti does imply with how the pensioner is starting to feel the band around his head tighten that it is now becoming painful for him due to the cooling system being turned off
also the big red warning on the monitors that fill up the entire thing with internal movement detected implys he normally does not move mostly likely keep calm and relaxed by being cooled down and that him moving is a warning thing(along with ahti he now climbing the walls of his pad due to the lack of cooling )
really with the implication by ahti has well that the power plant failing to keep northmoor cool will cause it to blow up and kill the entire bureau kind of shows why the whole keeping him cool is a good thing for pretty much everyone nearby
also that and the whole him gaining a new movement ablity involving space manipulation implys that he is still growing in power(add in the fact he started talking like the board in his letter to others at times and the whole power surge the board gave jesse and how the hiss seem to empower things as well)
It's "humane" in that he is presumably alive still. that's all. It's _practical_ for them... free energy!
This could be possibly nicely used as a sequel. The guy escapes and with him, the whole myriad of objects escape into the world. It would be probably hard to make the sequel of a similar awesome quality though.
Two years later and this video still rocks! Loved finding this out ingame via all the files, seeing this pop up on my feed makes me want to play it again!
Girl the video is amazing and the explanation
Also this game is soo underrated, i remember when i was playing i swear it messed me up soo bad, you feel that theres alot of truth or facts or uncover
I don't think it would truly count as "nuclear" power, but it likely works on the same principle: boil water, turn fan, move magnet, make energy.
Amazing video. During my playthrough, I wondered why they needed a nuclear power plant. This explanation is much more disturbing than anything I could have thought of but makes alot more sense than a random nuclear plant. Thanks
In some paper I found it said they needed the nsc because it makes the bureau basically invisible on the New York electric grid
@@TheCow74 I don't remember that paper. Could you tell me the location?
I do remember them saying only people looking for the FBC can find it because the house is designed that way 🤷
@@SherlockHolmes-gq3dm I’m pretty sure I found it up near the infrared computers of northmoor I think it’s called dynamic energy or something like that
You can also read it at 13:50 in the video
I wish I was a powerful psionic. Maybe one day...
Ah, but you're missing one detail: Northmoor's alive, yes. And if he is immortal, then there's always the possibility he could get himself under control. He was a bigtime parayootie, so if he could pull himself together, focus that rattled brain of his, he could conceivably cool off, and become the superbeing he always wanted. It's a double-edged sword, absolutely - because he won't be happy about being a battery for the past 50 years, and he'd probably make the Oldest House the Newest Crater if he got out - but there's always hope for him. At least, from his perspective, if he's still cogent enough to have a perspective at all.
man literally gets so angry he powers an entire transcendental anomalous facility.
I love how a game inspired by SCP foundation can create SCP foundation level theories.
I'm pretty late, but this is a great video. I've played this game multiple times on PC and PS4. I did get the bit about Northmoor being in the sarcophagus, but I definitely missed the part about him being alive and providing all of the electricity for The Oldest House. I find it weird that this didn't play more of a role in the game. Although, now that Remedy has announced that Control 2 is in the concept phase, I could absolutely see this becoming a major plot point for the sequel. I'm so excited to see where they go with the next game.
Gotta hand it to you on the Chernobyl acronym connection. I have not heard that elsewhere, nor would I have ever caught it.
I don't think Northmoor's body is exuding radiation outright. But that it has the same kind of energy output as a nuclear reactor. The parallels are there 'cause it's meant to elude to how powerful this energy is, not that it is nuclear or radioactive I feel.
This was the greatest gift they could have given Northmoor, an eternity with the one he held most dear, himself.
I forget in which memo it's stated, but at some point the Northmoor Sarcophagus Container is described as a humane way to house Northmoor.
Then there's infrared images of the guy on some monitors at the top of NSC-02, showing him on his knees with arms spread and chained to the opposite walls of his room or cell or whatever. And he's still alive.
So much for 'humane.'
Currently playing this game and that fact that i just found out it’s in the same universe as Alan wake makes me love it even more ‼️
It's a pretty nice take on the legend of Icarus - he gets too close to the sun and kind of... becomes the sun, in a way.
Oh I also just realized that Jesse can see NSC-01 in the distance in the The City threshold. Would love to know more bout that!
I'd imagine that one of the main reasons they don't want the NSC being breached is because there's a nuclear-grade human alive inside - imagine what the Hiss could do with Northmoor under its control?
Also in the incinerator room, there's an NPC that complains about screams coming from the incinerator
To be fair, he wasn't listening to anybody and was going full supervillain in his pursuit of power. Whether he's literally radioactive or not, it may not be safe for him to be outside containment until he discharges all the power he swallowed up.
Might be more humane for everyone else, and Northmoor doesn't get a say because he crossed a line.
I heard the plot of control 2 will be that"something" will get out of the oldest house and cause problems in NYC that we have to stop.
Watching this video I have a strong sense that in this case it's likely to be Northmore, especially with the parallels of the Chernobyl sarcophagus (how it was about to fail and a new one needed to be constructed, although the names don't match up, since the new one is called nsc), and the comments from Ahti.
Anyway, great video, I enjoyed it a lot.
How in the world did I miss this? Man, I was not paying attention.
When compared The Bureau and The SCP Foundation, there are a lot of parallels, but ultimately, they do different thing. So far, The Bureau only has to worry about objects, Dylan, and Northmoor. The SCP Foundation has to contain human anomalies, other entities, and objects as well. They don’t have Black Rock to contain things, so they have to experiment (throw D-Class at it) to find a way to contain it. Then they keep experimenting to find out more about it, which definitely helps in containing other objects like it.
They also do have an Ethics Committee, which is sometimes higher than even the O5 Council, and in one Tale, they know all the redacted data. Nearly everything the SCP Foundation does for containment is necessary, such as 110-Montauk, which, depending on which Tale you believe as canon, might not even be that bad. Anyway, it keeps The Scarlet King from coming and killing everyone.
Another is the protocol they use to keep SCP-2845 contained, if that thing breached containment it’d mean the end of the world. Nearly everything they do has a purpose, even though they can be painted as evil.
the crazy thing is in some ways SCP, Warehouse 13 and Control all were inspired by Raiders of the Lost Ark. Well specifically the very end scene where the "Top Men" working on the Ark are guys boxing it up and sticking it in a super secret government warehouse. Spawned stuff like these three settings just on the question "What if there was a government or other group who procured and stashed away the dangerous objects in the world".
Hey, I watched your video and frankly, I think you've nailed it. I really hope you cover more stuff on control, I myself made a video talking about how it's weirdly impressive but I don't think I covered much ground on the story characters like the previous board directors. on the other hand, I feel like you dived deep and explored its rich history. Your voice is really captivating and a little spooky at times lol. If you'd be interested, I'd love to work on a video with you If whenever you. if not, then no worries! keep up the fantastic work!

As a US federal employee, this game hit deep. We always train every year on what to do if leadership is gone due to a natural disaster or attack. Even the janitors know what to do. I think the USA can survive everything the world throws at it. Even if just a few low level people survive.
It's weird how I'm more prepared for going to work at the hospital even if the world has ended than I am prepared for the end of the world
Very good video. I like that you managed to find to find the Chernobyl NSC comparison. Amazing job. 👍👍

I never realized any of this! What a great video, thank you so much. When are you putting out more content??
Very cool video and commentary. Nice work!
yeah goddamn i was thinking at the time that i hope they at least gave him a TV in there or something
Im going to have to play this game again, thanks for the insight. Great video.
As a big old heat engine I wonder if the NSC is enough of a cooling system that it's the most comfortable place Northmoor could possibly be.
14:45
I don't think that "death" is the option here. You can imagine him like this vessel of power, filled to the point it can't even contain it by itself.
And what happens to the vessel's contents when it shatters? It spills out, all at once.
Yeah, i don't think that mercy is an option here. I guess he's gonna be contained until he fizzles out on his own.
Man, I skipped a lot of the files I found. I thought the NSC was all wires and nuclear fission. I didn’t think it literally housed and fed off the first documented director of the bureau of control.
I think it needs to be mentioned that if Northmoor is powering ALL of The Oldest House... Well, it's implied that the place is infinite, if not so large that we could never explore it fully... So if he powers ALL of it? Well, opening the Sarcophagus could be a galactic or universal threat.
Incredibly well made video, I asumed it was from a bigger video game journalism page, so I was surprised to see it was not the case! This video alone earned you a new subscriber, looking forward to new content of yours!
PS: I went up there pretty early in the game and didn't see the name... Either I missed it, or perhaps it's obscured by something until after you complete the game?
Northmoor gained his powers semi accidentally and got out of control, he may have agreed to confine himself out of necessity
This is such a good channel. Wish more content gets released soon.
I don't have the DLC, but I definitely missed some of the details mentioned here in the base game. Great job!
Edit: Can't believe you have so few susbscribers. Amazing quality; you deserve more.
Love it, control lore is kinda complicated to me due to the names
It's kinda fucked up but in hindsight it's a brilliant idea cause the building is fully self-sufficient. Imagine how much they've saved from not having to pay the bills.
Northmoor Control 2 boss fight calling it now
He broke out once due to awakening another ability he'll do it again.
Yup the SCP foundation is pretty evil, but then the the Bureau is pretty much just as bad.
I remember getting to the top of the tower and seeing how horrible all that was
Something hot enough would produce x-rays and gamma rays via thermal radiation.
Which you can't do outside of stuff, like, _the sun_
Hence the "impossible" part
This is such a cool way to confirm if I interpreted everything correctly, great video, keep it up!!
Thanks! I'm glad it helped to confirm your interpretation. :)
My wife just asked me if I was watching “Cunk on Earth”
For me he was inside the furnace😮

It’s not really a mystery. He’s literally on the screens.
What happened to the first power plant? It's labeled 02.
Well, he's dead now of course, he's hiss now.
this is kinda late, but trench didnt create the prime candidate program, he just put more resources into that program when he became director.
Wonder what happens when Northmoor does eventually die, assuming he does.
How does he eat and drink? Did he enter of his free will, was he forced, or was it board influence? Has he completely lost control over his powers, meaning he can't turn them off anymore?
Edit: Okay, so it says that the first NSC didn't hold him, meaning it sounds like he wanted to escape, but got put in again, into a more secure version. So regardless of board influence, it's FBC that wanted him in there, by force.
It's implied that he went in willingly the first time.
Thanks for the video!!!

Great video!
Tell us what would make a good Control2. No spoilers.
Maybe it's really awesome in there?
Was he put there willingly or was he forced?
The thing is, if he's alive, is he conscious? the screen says internal movement detected but he doesn't seem to be moving and how did the Bureau even got him under control for long enough to build a whole reactor around him not only once but twice? I don't think he's conscious at all, he's probably in some kind of paranormal energy supecharged vegetative state, basicall a man-shaped paranormal reactor, they probably couldn't kill him so they had to contain him and all that energy had to go somewhere.
The game implies that he did this willingly.

And how director ash searched his whole life for paranormal shit, they find the house one week after his funeral.
Makes you wonder what end would Jesse have
@@janeh3775 Jesse hates being in leadership positions, hates being called the Director, and hates the FBC. Now that she’s fused with Polaris, or was since the Ordinary AWE?, she might even be immune to aging. Resonance based entities seem to be immune to typical laws of reality.
Northmoor became something that makes power for others. Trench gives away all his secrets to the Bureau in death. And now Jesse gets to be in a position she inherently hates.
So yeah, all the Directors become something they fought hard to resist.
The line that sticks with me from the hotline was Trench saying "he went along with it, to his credit." So...Northmoor agreed to be locked in a box for the rest of his presumably unnatural life. He probably didn't anticipate how awful the experience would be, but it at least suggests that at some point he realized he'd gone too far and this was the only way to keep him from Chernobyling anywhere he set foot. Northmoor wanted power AND control. All he got was the power.
The fact that he tried to flee at least once tells a more tragic story.

One thing you didn't mention is that Northmoor actually almost escaped once, as the side of the tank thing reads it's actually the nsc-02 and you could actually find the original one on an expedition with the jukebox
So there's another tank in the expeditions? Any idea where?
@@Void-Realm you can see it in the distance exactly as big and same type as the 02 one
Presumably this is what happens when the temperature goes up above the limit.
He didn't really escape so much as he translocated NSC-1 to the Formation. I'm going to assume it was by accident, because he actually agreed to the NSC idea.
This was a brilliant explanation you definitely deserve more attention
The containment would have been near-impossible without Northmoor's direct cooperation, and it's implied that he could break out if he wanted to.
To my understanding, the water coolant keeps him comfortable, and he is sleeping soundly, perfectly content in having become the embodiment of power he so desired, though occasional annoyed mutterings can be heard from the Furnace when the temperature gets too high.
Yeah the container seems rather… inadequate if Northmoor is as powerful as its implied. I wouldn’t be surprised if they kept Northmoor in a coma or something.
He was cooperative AT FIRST. The NSC in the game is the 2nd one they built because he escaped the first one (you can find the remains of it in the Formation. I don't think Northmoor understood he was going to be strapped down and locked in a sensory deprivation chamber with zero human contact for the rest of however long he'll live (perhaps he can't die). He wasn't mentally sound BEFORE several decades of torture.
Seems accidental, he apparently teleported out and didnt have control over powers, which was suppressed in the second one@@Momo_Minomo
@@Momo_Minomo How do you know that was on purpose?
@@dave_the_slick8584 I went back to the game and looked at all the notes I collected to figure out where, exactly, I picked up that it was a purposeful escape attempt.
In a note called NSC it mentions the NSC-01 was made to humanely contain him in comfort but he somehow used his powers to move the entire sarcophagus to the Foundation and it was only after they recaptured him that he was put in restraints inside the 2nd NSC and they added spatial anchors to prevent it from being moved again.
So he wasn't strapped down the first time but he was still locked up with no human contact before he tried to escape. They apparently decided to abandon the humane and comfort parts in retaliation. Similar to what they did with refusing Dylan any entertainment when he "acted up" on top of the isolation and no privacy he already had.
