    I’ve had this argument even with my mechanic. He was recommending 10-w60 because it’s hot in the summer so on so forth. I declined the idea I’ve been running 5w-30 for the entire life of the vehicle. It runs and idles so smooth and quite. 135i N55, 96,000 miles.

    Happy that I found this video. Not a petrol guy, M57 driver, in summer these engines because of emissions and such, usually run quite hot, like 92-95 to a 100C at a traffic light. Experimented with 5w50 even though recommended is 5w30, now it gets a bit colder in Europe, switched back to 5w40. Question is, visually the 5w50 did not seem thicker than the 5w30 or 40, is it possible that it could have caused premature wear on bearings?

      Since i out 5w30 in my 310k km m57n2 it doesnt run as well. I hope it didn’t create much more wear on the rods. Always go 5w40 at the least

    Ever since bmw made rod bearings a regular maintenance item all engines have the potential for premature rod knock. It all comes down to how well the car is maintained. Unfortunately the downside of buying 2nd hand cars we dont always know how well the previous owner took care of the car.

      @Mp-jw1qg Рік тому

      they are a maintainance item though, tight tolerances = efficiency@@kern417 bmw states to replace them in their v8s and v10 every 80k miles. the inline 6s only spin them when you ignore oil leaks. a lot of n54s with spun bearings becuase the owner didnt change a 15$ gasket. bmws dont have any reduendency in the oiling system and everything is reliant on precise oil pressure. 1k miles with a decent oil leak will starve bearings enough to start the process of them wearing/spinning. i have built dozens of them and was bmw tech for 15 years, bmw designed them this way for service contracts. lol

      @@kern417 From what I've heard, 5W oils are also better at durability, since the base oil is thicker. So the viscosity does not decrease as much over the life span of the oil.

  • @imperatormouse2735
    @imperatormouse2735 2 роки тому +1

    6:40 If a stock engine with stock power level and the OEM oil viscosity (0W-20 for TÜ1 and 0W-12 for TÜ2) is the baseline and you go for a big increase in power then your tribo system - lets stay with conrod bearings - changes due to the increased load towards the left end of the Stribeck curve. What you then should do is to pull it back to the right end of the Stribeck curve by using an oil with higher viscosity.
    Therefore using a higher vis oil in a tuned engine is the right approach BUT as you correctly said the tolearances stay the same unless you redesign your engine (nobody is doing that btw). Same tolerances at a higher power level lead you to a more frequent metal-to-metal contact despite a hig vis oil because you simply don't get the higher viscosity into the tribo contact.
    Bottomline, the tolerances equal not only to a specific viscosity grade (as mentioned above) but especially also to a certain STOCK power level. changing the power level leads to significantly different friction & wear behaviour regardless of UA-cam and Forums who are competing with each other who will be the first B58 with 1000hp...
    Hope this is clear.

    in my basic understanding about rod knocks. usually rod knocks causes due to bad fuel ⛽️ you putting in your car. for example if you car only takes premium gas and you only putting regular/semi premium gas. that sometimes causes irregular misfire on the engine because of the quality of gas you’re putting is not that gas that manufacturers recommended. also rod knocks caused sometimes by the rod cap bolts stretching during very hard driving or improper rod bolt torqueing during the build of the car. so basically the heavy your mods is the more strain you’re putting on your engine.

      The reason this is done is because one answer does not stop the train of thought. The goal of a video, FAQ, news article, etc is to cover a topic in it's entirety to address wherever the conversation can go. That simplifies the conversation so I can go on to the next question.
