Not one video on UA-cam to tune a banjo. People like yourself doing a whole lot of talking about tuning a banjo but no one going down one string at a time to actually tune it. Crazy
What tuning do you what? C-G-D-A or G-D-A-E or a higher one or a lower tuning? Many instruments are tuned the same as a violin in 5th's (G-D-A-E) or a lower voice would be a viola in 5th's (C-G-D-A) or maybe a guitar tuning (imperfect fourths) or maybe some tuning that you have heard at some point in your life. Lets say your tuning in 5th's, a violin, then your largest string on your base side (or left side) for this example a G-string, count up five notes G is one, A is two, B is three, C is four, D is the fifth note so now we have a G string on the base and it's neighbor on the base will be a D. Count 5 more D-E-F-G so a G note or string is the next one and it's over the middle and into the treble side of the violin, and count another five for an A note or string and do it again for your next one or a E note or string. There are many tunings I don't know, Banjo, Sitar, wind instruments etc, but it really is all math, music is a math form for listening. Best I can do & hope it helps.

@@jr136100 Everything from Jazz, to the Kingston Trio sounds great on a Tenor Banjo.
Jazz Banjo Academy But for mandocello it will sound one octave below so mandocello is the octave mandola

what strings are recommended? I've broken 4 strings trying to tune up to A! Tried 10's 9's and 8's, they always snap as soon as I get up to around G.

have you tried lowering to A

Just decide which tuning you want and then go to any tuning app if you don’t have an electronic tuner.
Bet the A string is prone to snapping probably can't get past B.
