Wolfgang Van Halen is BRUTALLY HONEST About VAN HALEN TRIBUTE

  • As reported by Guitar.com, in a recent interview Wolfgang Van Halen talked about issues with the band and why he thinks any kind of tribute / reunion show is unlikely. He was brutally honest, but who is he talking about exactly? Alex Van Halen? David Lee Roth? Sammy Hagar? Or someone else?

Hello. I was wondering. You have the guitars hanging in the background. Do you store them out of tune with no tension on strings to preserve the strings. Does it matter? Thanks. I was at Van Halens first and third show of their final tour. The third was better since they had a little practice.

I remember Eddie by listening to the albums, looking through old guitar magazines , and wearing my EVH t-shirt. Watch Wolfgang play at Taylor Hawkins tribute concert is fitting in my opinion and hearing that it helped provide closure for him is so great. Nothing else is needed.

DLR is the biggest hurdle to a EVH tribute. I’m certain of this and I don’t think anyone can convince me otherwise. As much as I love the Dave era VH and feel it is the best VH. He is by far, the biggest prima donna in the entire camp.

I think you are probably right, but yet there is a black and white interview on UA-cam with Dave, Al and Edward talking about the band's early days and can CERTAINLY feel the love between them. I am sure its probably monetary as I find it hard to believe even with Dave's enormous ego that wouldnt want to celebrate his friends legacy.

I've always been truly mindboggled over the years that Van Halen even made it as long as they did in the early years with DLR as their frontman.I mean don't get me wrong he's always been a great frontman & IMO (for his showmanship) one of the best, but like Eddie stated during one of his many interviews, the only important thing to DLR was that he was always the star while Ed,Mikey & Big Al were just musicians. He could care less about the rest of the band & even less about the road crew.Ive talked to several roadies of the lighting crew on one of VH's earlier tours and other than DLR giving them backstage passes (with their initials on them to pass out to the groupies which they thought DLR would be sleeping with, earning that roadie a $100 cash bonus the next morning at breakfast) they said he was a straight up a****** around the clock.

That music will never die no matter what original members are doing it. Despite all the self-inflicted turmoil from Ed all the years, the original six pack is still heralded amongst the Holy Grail of rock n' roll catalogs. It's that good. It sold 1-2 million a year during the Hagar years.

Yeah but the difference is that the surviving VH members would make a shit ton of money and the local tribute bar band makes squat.
I think the whole thing is dumb. It's nothing more than a money grab for promoters. Nobody is gonna forget about VH. They made their mark. They are legendary. They will live for infinite. Just like Hendrix, Zepplin and the Beatles do. And no tribute was ever attempted for those bands. And they didn't need it either.
I agree with the message of this video. Let's just leave VH alone. They will never be forgotten as they were. Never!

That place is so small! it was in your face Rock and Roll. Then the second show as at the Tulsa assembly Center in 1979 and they opened for Black Sabbath I started peeking when they hit the stage so that whole show was a trip if you know what I mean. I'll never forget that show! OMG!!! Then in 85 D.L.R. lift the band. I got Married in 81 and we started having our family. Next I heard David was leaving in 85 and took 60 people with him for me that was the End! I still listened and bought the music but I never wen't back to see a show, my loss I guess. I just couldent except the change, but I love them to this day. R.E.P Eddie...

Wolf is right the music is the tribute.

It is probably everyone involved. Wolfgang's view is also skewed to the feelings of his father. Not an easy thing to do considering all of the incarnations of the band.

Maybe Wolf just feels it is time to let it rest. If a reunion would be attempted and fall apart due to conflicts then that might just tarnish a very shining legacy that all rock and roll fans have to remember a truly great band by.

I think tribute bands are the way to go because if you get a few of the original members together then there’s always the comparisons. Also, I think it’s cool if an original member is out performing to spontaneously play a VH song occasionally 😊.

I think you’ve handled this subject about as gracefully as anyone can, and I must agree-if a tribute concert never takes place, I think that’s okay. There’s a wealth of media available to read or watch. Let the surviving members move on to pursue whatever they please. Really, they’ve given us more than we’ll ever need in terms of entertainment, and don’t owe the world anything. We’re fortunate to have a level-headed young man in Wolfgang to keep the bloodline going, not by imitating what Van Halen did, but by working hard to forge his own path. He’s truly a breath of fresh air, in spite of the circus he grew up in. Let’s focus on the future.

I'd like to see not a tour, but just one concert. You could have a number of musicians stand in on all areas, drums, bass, guitar, and vocals. I'm sure a great number of musicians in the music industry would love to be a part of that in honoring the memory of not only Eddie, but all genres of the Van Halen band. But I doubt it'll ever happen.

*Max, brother, you hit all squarely on the head (and, mind you, I love how you pronounced Wolfie's first name). For one, it's still too soon. Two, I think it comes down to Dave and, to a lesser extent, Al (whom is likely and reasonably still mourning), not to mention Sam, whom had his opinions prior to Ed's passing (although Eddie's death was sobering to Hagar). You nailed it about Mikey. Michael Anthony is ALL class and someone from whom we can learn about professional decorum. Bottom line: The time is not "Right Now" (to quote the song). Wolfgang has every right to tread lightly. In this day and age, we seem to be focused on instant gratification. We really need to step back and marinate in what Eddie and Van Halen, in all of its incarnations, has gifted us. Let's circle back in around five-to-10 years and see if anything can be done, IF they all want and can still commit musically. Thank you, Max, for this excellent and conscientious breakdown.* 🙂🙂🤘🤘

Your comment made so much sense and thank you for that. I think in time as you said they will see how it goes. Eddie was great he was so young and he's missed by a whole lot of people. He left such an impression as a guitarist who mastered his instrument. Wow that word Master. Just thinking . But anyway thank you

In all honesty, Diamond Dave is always up for grabbing attention at every chance. Reason why he and Eddie butted heads so much in the early 80s. If by chance Alex could still wield those sticks of thunder and occasionally fill in for Jason Bonham in the Circle, that'd be as close to a Van Halen reunion as we would get. But a music wide Van Halen tribute show would be a fitting closure after two years without the Mozart of hard rock himself here. Wolfie is right in a way, but it all boils down to one person.

  • @pickbass1
    @pickbass1 Рік тому

If I remember correctly, Sammy said no reunion after Wolf said no reunion. He softened his stance quite some time later. I think Sammy said something like if Wolf wanted to do a reunion he would do it though he wanted Mike to do it too. To be honest, it would likely be DLR being difficult or Alex saying "I can't bring myself to do it without Ed."

I was looking at this last night after seeing the Taylor Hawkins/Foo Fighters/WVH for the first time and Rick Beato made the great point that Wolfie has played on stage with/as van halen for more than a decade. I think the more interesting question would be if he and his uncle wanted to collaborate on an album and rebuild into Van Halen FOUR! Doing that on the side of his Mammoth main gig would be special...clearly he is also a member of the Dave Grohl Band so that will probably happen again. The Dave Grohl/Van Halen Project does have nice ring to it.
