Alan Menken and the Leading Ladies | A Making of Disney Renaissance Films

- Опубліковано 26 чер 2022
- This is from the Signature Edition of The Little Mermaid that was released in 4K Ultra HD during 2019. This is a conversation with the singing voices of some of the most iconic Disney women in the 1990s-2010s. It includes characters from Beauty and the Beast, Pocahontas, Hercules, and Tangled. There is also talk of the great Howard Ashman!
This is uploaded for the purpose of education for the viewer on the history of this piece of animation. I do not own this, and if the Disney Corporation wants it taken down then I will take it down. - Фільми й анімація
I love how Jodi and Paige are kinda geeking out at the other women as they sing their parts. You can see how they all really love ALL Disney works
Teams are common there
I felt the same as them!
Good catch! Exactly what I noticed and felt, too.
Paige is sooo sweet! I got to meet her at fan expo this year and she hugged me as I sobbed lol
“I can sing a line from Pocahontas and see this 25-year-old burst into tears”
Me, a 27-year-old, hearing Judy sing the lines from Colors of the Wind: 😭🤧😩
Me, a 22 year old having the same reaction
Me, and I was in my twenties when that movie was new, now thinking just, "Wow, her voice is beautiful, and she sounds just like Pocahontas whether she looks like her or not."
"Can you sing with all the voices of the mountain,
Can you paint with all the colors of the wind."

Pocahontas should be played on stage with Judy in it.
She's just so good.
Wow.
Oh my gosh, me too! A 28 year old tearing up hearing the song. T^T
Would be perfect with Lea Salonga, she was the singing voices of Mulan and Jazmine
Where is She?🤔
She's pretty in demand, may have been unavailable
I wonder if it's because she wasn't the speaking voice.
@@Gabe_M Makes sense, but still. Because she’s still alive, this video, while amazing on its own, was missing something. And of course, despite only being a singing voice, it was Miss Salonga!
@@kieranstark7213 you know, it doesn't make sense. Alan Menken is there because he was a composer, so she should have been there for Aladdin. He didn't do the music of Mulan so that wouldn't have been represented here anyway.
Ah Alan Menkan, one of the greatest Broadway and Disney composers of all time.
one of the greatest composers of all time period.
Definitely one of the greatest composers of our lifetimes. I'm sure at least 50 % of the world's population have listened to one of his tunes at one point in their life. And probably still hardly anyone would recognize him on the street.
@@joshuaklub3786 preach!!!!
Probably the greatest Disney composer of all time.
@@joshuaklub3786 So true! He's up there with Leonard Bernstein and George Gershwin. Menken's compositions makes many other contemporary composer's works sound like first drafts.
At 3:51 when Jodi says "I can see Howard right here. " is so moving.
He is missed dearly.
It made me tear up.
And Alan saying “I know”
@@jennatomashosky8624 Me too.
She had a real bond with him. I think the loss of Howard really hit her hard.
That *look* she and Alan share between them as he says "I know"... God, that broke my heart. They both loved Howard so much.
OMG can’t stop beaming during “Zero To Hero” - one of the best Disney songs EVER!
literal happy tears of nostalgia!
OST of Hercules is best to me
Hercules isn’t my favorite animated Disney movie but god are Zero to Hero and Go the Distance my favorite Menken songs.
@@ethanreyes2631 you should hear songs from the Muses. Masterpierce!
The music WAS the movie.
08:49 the way Lillias just casually goes from chilling out to full on belting is insane 🤩🤌
An icon
She is SO talented
SHE DOESN'T MISS A BEAT
My jaw was on the floor 🙌🏽
3:54 - The Little Mermaid
5:37 - Beauty & The Beast
6:57 - Pocahontas
8:51 - Hercules
10:21 - Tangled
Today I learned that you can press on the numbers and itll take you to that part of the video🤯

It gives me chills that Jodi Benson sings Part Of Your World exactly the same way howard directed her at that time, even after 30 years has being passed now.
Well i would imagine it's like putting on shoes that are tailored to you with her slipping back into her vocals so easily
I saw jodi at a convention in May 2022...she sounds the same and is amazing...she made my daughter, Ariel's day (she was 5 when the movie came out)...such an amazing lady...but I love all the ladies...they're amazing...
It brings tears to my eyes to hear her sing that. Brings me right back to my childhood. ❤️
Hearing that takes me back to that 5byear old with the big hardcover book, the Schplastic Book Club paperback the audio cassette, the plush Scuttle, the PVC figurines (I still have two) the VHS cassette (from its initial release), and (when I was in art school) the CD and two disk Platinum edition DVD's. When I hear some of this old Menken music (even that water intro)... to quote some Giselle lyrics from Enchanted, "my heart is sighing".
@@meredithhedghes9222she do not sound the same..
"I mean, you're practically like a walking Disney collectible."
That is a classic line all by itself.
When Judy hit the "you don't know"...my heart sank.
Shout out for Alan's work in Hunchback of Notre Dame and Aladdin too.
And Enchanted.
I think that Hunchback was a better showcase of his songs with male singers. "The Bells of Notre Dame", "Topsy Turvy", and "Hellfire" are such underappreciated Disney songs.
That “you don’t know” tied with the beautiful piano…so touching
I wish Pat Carroll, Angela Lansbury, Lea Salonga and Susan Egan had also been apart of this as well.
Pat Carrol just died a few weeks ago. Didn’t you hear? She was probably sick while they recorded this unfortunately.
@@hellopumpkin86 😢
@@hellopumpkin86 Dame Angela Lansbury has now also passed away sadly.
@@mpowe123 I know! 😭
This year we have lost a lot of Disney Renaissance legends: Gilbert Gottfried, Pat Carrol, and now Dame Angela Lansbury.
And do you think Disney gives a crap? No, they are going to continue to greenlight these unnecessary live-actions!
@@hellopumpkin86 This was made back in 2018/2019 so Pat and Angela could have done it. RIP to both talented, beautiful ladies
we need 3 hours of this with ALL the leading ladies of Disney... I would not stop crying for 3 hours straight. this is so wonderful.
It would be deeply satisfying and nostalgic to have all of those icons in one room showcasing their art together.
Judy is honestly the most underrated Disney princess voice. Color of the Wind is my favorite Disney princess song.
Is she underrated though? I hardly knew Paige until these videos. Or any of them. Of course I was in elementary school back then. Shit I thought Christina Aguilera was Mulan because of the song! Reflection AND Mi Reflejo también!
Had no idea Pocahontas was played by a jew 🤣 such a plot twist
@@miralabualjadail4206 And back then it didn't matter. And they produced masterpieces.
no same I looove gospel but I think Judy has the best vocals, maybe a little more than Lea Salonga and Anika Rose
And a tear fell after hearing Judy Kuhn sing her part. How her voice embodies the emotion of the music and lyric is incredible. Her voice can pull on em heartstrings.
If you haven’t watched her sing “Colors” with Jeanine Tesori. It’s hilarious and heartwarming.
@@hannahremmel9550 she also does a sondheim love medley that is amazing with two other singers. She has what is probably my least favorite of the three songs but it's still fantastic, highly recommend.
Same! 29 and and the song is still so special to me.
Mother Gothel's voice actress's voice is sooooo madly soothing!
The Pocahontas song made me tear up.🤧
I’m crying now 😭
I think we all teared up at that song I know I definitely did
Just wow😢
Yeah. I was 3 watching it on repeat back in like 1995-96.
Idk how to explain how much I’d like to go back and relive those days.
Now I’m crying
Their voices can command emotions and that is rare. These women are phenomenal!!! Mr. Menken, thank you sir for your talent.
My literal childhood AND adulthood right here. Such ICONIC ladies here and they’re all so humble!
I love that too. ^___^
Lillias White never fails to blow me away. Her voice is extraordinary!
FACTS! It's because of the Muses is why Hercules was my favorite Disney movie growing up!
I loved how everyone else was like, “oh, okay we’re the back up. Wait, why the hell’d you stop?”
Wow, the way Lillias JUMPED up and that first note!! They’re all incredible, especially Menken, phenomenally talented man. The Disney films but especially the songs mean so much to me even as an adult. They provided escapism, they helped me discover my love for music and singing. And it’s truly timeless.
@@Jennyftb007 Right! She went from zero to hero in no time flat 😉
She obviously had the best technique out of all the women there too! Sounded better than all of them combined!
On another note: I don’t understand how a yt woman can sing colors of the wind and not be weirded out by the fact that she is playing such a sexualized and inaccurate version of a little indigenous girl, a real victim of kidnapping and r*pe. It’s super weird to me.
i love donna murphy so much. this is the first time i watched her after the behind the scenes for tangled but i just love her here and maybe forever starting now. the way she's so classy in her own way with the leading ladies and how stunning her acting was when she started to sing. like, she didn't just sing, she PERFORMED. her charisma is amazing. and when she teared up at the end when alan was playing part of your world? she's so precious.
You know Lilias White is on another level, when she starts singing and I forgot that there are five other legends standing nearby.
The only one missing is Lea Salonga 🤧
Unfortunately she is doing a musical in London
And Susan Egan!
@@PianoDisneygal10 And also Liz Callaway who is a hoot when she tells all of her failed Disney lead auditions before finally landing the lead singing voice of Anastasia.
@@Rae8Anne Anastasia was a twentieth century fox movie. At the time but I love it
When Pocahontas hits that “How HIGH does the sycamore grow?…” it really gets me every time😢
I know he worked on Hunchback of Notre Dame as well, so I really wish they included that actress as well, because God Help The Outcast is one of the greatest songs ever written.
Agreed 100%. That song always makes me cry.
Heidi Mollenhauer sang God Help the Outcasts in the film soundtrack
I thought I was the only one in love with this song. Never heard it in English, but in Spanish, I sang it with my heart so many times!
Or (even better) have him look back at some of his male-led songs. It went beyond David Ogden Stiers (RIP)singing "My Land" in two separate characters, Tony Jay (RIP) is no longer available to sing "Hellfire" again. But, Paul Kandel's still around. His narrator clown Clopin had two iconic songs.
Alan Menken on the piano and every single one of their voices brought me to tears. The nostalgia is overwhelming. Genius musical composition. They should all be so proud of their work.
I'm 35 years old boy watching this on 2022. We had so much fun in the 90's
Oh my God I love this gathering! Thank you for posting
I am 33 years old and I am sighting here teary eyed. All of these ladies and Alan are legends. I am so glad to grow up with Disney.
Me too, me tooo 😢 xD same age, same tears 😂
@@aigonve21 same. Age wise, Pocahontas was the one that got me the most. I remember having these little boots with her on them. And I feel so old.
Same and it makes me sad, that we won't get to see more of those Disney movies anymore 😞
Me too. Literally my entire childhood
Grown ass adult here and I burst into tears the second Jodi started singing 😭
I love that Alan is going crazy for his own music. 😂 The fact that he is able to acknowledge his own genius is funny to see. I pray he keeps creating until he can't any longer, much like his dearly departed original partner Howard. I'm always thankful they created most of the music for Aladdin before his passing. ♥️
Donna Murphy starts to tear up at 15:23 from Alan playing the ICONIC Little Mermaid score and Lillias White noticed and they start holding hands. So sweet. Love seeing all these talented, gorgeous, lovely women together with the talented and charming Alan Menken.
I'm 27 years old. You can imagine how vividly emblazoned I have in my memory those first 4 movies...I just cried
It’s me. I’m the 20 something dancing in my kitchen at these little song snippets and fawning over these 5 pieces of my childhood. I’m 28 and a new mom and find myself sharing these movies with my children as well. Thank you for all of your work ladies and sir. I love you. ❤️💕
"We are the Muses..."
Goosebumps, dawg.
When Lilias went ‘we are the muses’ my legs went giddy
Jodi Benson looks so humble and just truly honored to have been able to be part of history.
The way he express any movie mood to music is out of this world. Even the closing tune in this video leaves a very deep emotion that sums up thier journey.
Can we take a minute to appreciate the fact that every single one of these ladies immediately knew how their song went. It just proves how much they truly loved what they did.
Watching these voice actresses brings tears to my eyes... Disney Renaissance was the best era ever. 💖
The first notes of Part of Your World instantly made me cry. And they might never truly understand how that music has touched so many people. Thank you to for having created theses beautiful pieces of art that continue to inspire
Please make this a full-length show: "The Leading Ladies of Disney" with more of the wonderful singers that have made these movies so impactful and memorable!
The joy that Alan lets out in that “YEAH” after Lillias gets going is next to nothing
I am 32, and every single one of these women touched my life. I remember seeing the commercials for pocahontas for the first time. And how excited I was!! I remember watching Tangled in my early 20s feeling the same feelings as a little girl. Thank
You so much Disney.
Alan Menken is happy for them. Howard Ashman would also be happy for Jodi Benson and Paige O'Hara as he worked them. He and Alan were a great team and were very close friends. It's a shame that Howard left the world so soon as he was often referred to as another Walt Disney as he had the same creative mind as Walt Disney did.
Instant tears when Judy Kuhn starts singing at 6:56. One of the most gorgeous vocal performances in Disney history and some of the most moving melodies ever written in my opinion!
Opening To The Little Mermaid 1989 VHS
"We are the Muses" I got chills all over!!! So good
Same! Literal chills
im tryna find that exact moment. where is it?
12:36 ❤️
I love the fact that Jodi is also a princess outside the "Disney circle" being the voice actress of Thumbelina.
i love how shook all the ladies get for each other
watching this, i think i welled up with tears 10 different times- iconic songs and voices that have shaped peoples lives
Women with this type of talent arent often recognised on a global scale- Musicals can be so niche but Disney picks the perfect people
Im so glad we have social media and stuff like this now- hearing behind the scenes and production stories is golden
People will look back at these songs in 100 years like we look back on Opera and classical scores
I wish this was another 2 hours longer
I extremely love this. This makes me so so truly happy
I can't help but picture the characters while these amazing women talk
Ayyyyyeeee she got up out her seat when she heard that note
The ending was just magical 😭
RIP Howard Ashman
Thank you once again for putting this and so many other BTS moments out.
I love how these amazing ladies were absolutely stunned and mesmerized with each other’s talents.
The little mermaid was the first movie I ever saw in theaters. Life lessons learned from these women singing and the music and lyrics of these two men shaped me into the empathic man I am today. Who would’ve thought taking a little boy to the little mermaid would be so monumental
This is literally my story too :) I can still remember the thrill of hearing the little mermaid score/soundtrack blaring in the cinema
I cannot wait for the live action it's going to be so much fun! Halle had me crying with just that little bit of Part Of Your World, I'm going to be a WRECK in the theater!
You're not alone. So many men I know love that movie and know all the lyrics by heart. Married to one of them!
the little mermaid raised me 🥹
Same here ^^
I like how they are all so excited about their work.
8:51 That note came out of nowhere!!!!! 🤩🤩🤩🤩
I love Jodi Benson’s voice and what a beautiful song!
When she said “I can see Howard right here” the tears came to my eyes
I got goose-bumps when I heard Miss Pocahontas, again!
Oh ditto❤
These ladies are so lovely. These movies are never going to be forgotten💙
How wonderful to see all these voice actresses showing love to and being proud of their characters, just as much as we've appreciated.
5 legends sitting humbly on a chair unaware of how much they're filling our hearts with joy to the point of it leaking out our eyes
As a 30 year old man I'm happy to admit that as soon as I heard the first word of Part Of Your World sung, I got emotional. Disney music was and is still my life. I love hwo everybody got teary over Colors Of The Wind. The music really has grown muliple generations who love this music
My childhood…flashing before my eyes…
Just hearing these amazing women talk literally has me in tears, because you can literally hear the characters in their voices. I had to grow up too fast as a child, and I think Disney has helped me keep a small untouched part of my childhood alive, and I will be forever grateful. 💕
My childhood, now I am crying
Just look at how enamored everyone is with one another's singing. Especially when Judy started Colors of The Wind.
I love the part where they bring up what it's like voicing an animated character. It brings up a good point that animation is unique compared to live action but also requires more talent from the voice actors and of course the animators than most people might think.
I wish Susan Egan and Lea Solanga could’ve made it
8:51 THE WAY SHE JUST JUMPS INTO IT. LIVING LEGEND
They are a Real princesses ❤❤🎉🎉 thank you for everything this was my childhood 🎉🎉 bravo love the 1990,s❤❤❤
I'M NOT CRYING!!! U ARE CRYING!!! Oh, Lord... I grew up being a Disney fan this touched my heart in a new different way. Thank you so very much
Jodi's voice is untouched by time!!!
All of these ladies are amazing 😩😩😩😩
This healed my inner child in some way, not crying
Incredible stuff!
Loved it when Jodi Benson leaned in to do background vocals.
These Disney musicals really resurrected Disney and animation in film. Alan, Howard, and these AMAZING ladies were integral in making this happen. Hats off to Jodi because The Little Mermaid really kicked everything off. Every time I hear her sing it makes me feel so emotional.
Lol when Lillias hit THAT note and Donna bout fell out her chair....
Man, she really switched it on: 8:51
8:49 - 9:18 my favourite part ms white is an icon
This is so great and insightful. It’s so clear as to why Alan Menken’s collaborations with Howard Ashman and Stephen Schwartz became so legendary. I can’t wait to hear the new songs he’s writing with Lin-Manuel Miranda for The Little Mermaid!
Movie's out now, so what u think?
Thank you for uploading this. I’ve been looking everywhere for this.
Thank you for the time of happiness you have brought to my life. All 15 minutes I was crying ❤
8:50, slay queen
This makes me feel so warm and fuzzy inside. It is home. It reminds me of these heavy childhood times, when this world was there for me, holding me and giving me hope. Man, I love all these ladies.
I love how they are fan girling at each other. It's so magical.
All the ladies where waiting for the hercules Song cuz they new that was the best one
My tears just came pouring out from the first note sung until the end of the video. What legends
I've got shivers, thank you so much
Chills when she says “we are the muses”
I love this reunion I can't believe how time passes so fast.
Why did this make me emotional soon as Jodi Benson started singing??? Love all these ladies' voices!
This video made me so happy. All these wonderful women and their voices, Alan and Howard and their masterpieces, all inspired me so much as a child and continue to inspire me as an adult ❤
Not to mention how pretty Donna Murphy is, like wow! Inside and out, she’s a lot more attractive than her own character Gothel (mainly inside)!
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU I'VE ALWAYS WANTED TO WATCH THIS!!! I WISH IT WAS LONGER
Cried all the way through this
This was amazing, thank you so much!!
