I recall "Saturday Night Live" did a spoof off of this promo in reference to NBC's disastrous prime-time lineup: "NBC, Smart As A Peacock!"
thank you for sharing this! R.I.P. Casey!
@98Dougmorris yes RIP Casey like zoinks!!!!!!!!!!!...I hope you will reply to this
I remember this but I didn't think it was that long ago. Life is flying by it seems.
R.I.P. Casey "Shaggy" Kasem.
R I P mr . Kasem 1932-2014
The original host of radio's American Top 40.
I remember that little tune as a kid...didn't realize it was so long ago..
I hope y'all will reply to this I loved seeing Roy Clark and Kenny Rogers in this promo can y'all believe next month March Kenny will have been gone for 4 years????!!!!!!!!!...loved Roy Clark watched him every week on Hee Haw thanks to VHS DVD and UA-cam I can see him any time I'd like to
Saturday Night Live began its fifth season in 1979-80 with the NBC, Smart as a Peacock promo.
This is from when NBC almost ceased to exist.
I didn't say Hope was bad, in fact I admire the guy. Just that idea for the special sounds silly. Just seems like something they came up with out of random.
@efan2011 I know that was 10 years ago but I sorry
The 1979-'80 schedule (which featured "KATE LOVES A MYSTERY", "THE MISADVENTURES OF SHERIFF LOBO", " "THE BEST OF 'SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE'" and "HELLO, LARRY") was not among the best of NBC's prime-time offerings- and some of those "specials" {"Men Who Rate a '10'"} were literally thrown together at the last minute [Dick Clark was a master at assembling those on short notice].
Ah yes, and we can't forget Don Imus' most famous spoof...NBC Loud as a Peacock. though the tape was played on 66 WNBC then...let's say things didn't go so well.
NBC stars still alive in 1979
Are
Michael Landon ( bonanza and Little house on the prairie )
Redd Foxx ( Sanford and son )
James Garner( the Rockford Files )
Raymond Burr ( Perry Mason and Ironside )
Jack Albertson ( Chico and the man )
They are all dead now.

That NBC peacock looked as if its feathers were colored like candy corn. Weird, is it?
It looked like that because that was the early form of the Proud N's peacock; later, it would take on the spectrum of colors it would be recognized for (IIRC).
No it's not weird at all so I'm giving you a comment thumbs down.
1976 n?!
Proud As A Peacock era NBC in a nutshell: HOT TUB TIME
I'm giving your comment thumbs down because you never explained what the hell your comment means even after a year!
@ColumbiaPicturesFan and is Casey Kasem
This was probably from WCSH-TV in Portland, ME, eh?
Correct!
Thanks!
Maybe, From WAVY-TV 10 In Hampton Roads/Portsmouth VA
Casey kasem was great here, but still the best of all time was Ernie "The Loooove Boat" Anderson
@mooky9669 Not to mention Robin on the Superfriends too.
what was wrong with that???!!!!....Bob Hope was an institution he was NBC..his Christmas specials were big ratings successes for the network til he couldn't do them anymore cause he got sick...also he was a very funny guy who didn't have to use curse words every third or fourth word unlike some of today's comedians
Any ideas why that peacock was so short lived?
nbc proud as a peacock but not so easy
like zoinks scoob!
If I remember correctly NBC had nothing to be proud of in 1979.
My favorite. Didn't realize it was over 30yrs. old. I was 11 and yeah NBC was bland. I only remember watching Different Stokes. Which Hello Larry came from. Saturday night.
From my memory this was NBC's worst year ever. Silverman thought he could fix NBC immediately but the truth was it needed a complete overhaul. I don't think Silverman lasted more than 2 1/2 seasons and then when Grant Tinker took over(along with Tartikoff) NBC still sucked for another 2-3 years. I'll say Silverman layed a decent foundation, Tartikoff brought a youthful exuberance, and Tinker brought professionalism and stability. By the late 80's NBC ruled the networks.
You’re absolutely right and Silverman really does deserve more credit than he got. He really did lay the foundation for many shows that eventually helped NBC rise to the top.
Eric Haynes the word is laid
As from 1981-82 season through 1983-84 season, NBC was still the 3rd-rated network then. But in 1984-85 season, NBC began to rise from 3rd to 2nd(meanwhile ABC fell to the 3rd, CBS kept the 1st), and in 1985-86 season, the network became the 1st place.
@proken58 THIS
@collegeman1988
It wasn't as funny as I though it would be. They should have replaced smart with Dumb
@bradhig Probably found out just how lousy NBC's shows have become & decided to call it quits...
This is what happens when you take Columbo off the air.
At least NBC learned oversimplication stinks
For lack of a better word, NBC's "Proud as a peacock" slogan was dorky.
The "Bob Hope in China" special has to be one of the stupidest ideas for a special I have ever heard of. No wonder NBC sucked so bad then.
