A round manhole cover literally cannot fall into its hole. Its simply not possible unless it is severely damaged. The shape doesn't allow it to go through no matter how you turn it.
There's another reason: When you are moving rectangles that weight really much, you need to carry it. But if you have a circle shaped manhole, you can roll it Edit: Me is famous🤑🤑🤑

Man hole covers in the UK are square, and sometimes those sharp edges can move around, or flex when it’s hot, causing tire damage if you drive over them in the wrong way.
Actually they fall in quite often, the ground can expand over time, especially on a hot day, those covers expand more than the concrete, which is one reason for the metal rim, but it isn't a perfect system and it can't stop most of the force when the metal wedges into the concrete. The ground will either start to crack or it could expand so much that when it cools back down, it could contract to be small enough to fall in

There’s no way the lid weighs that much. Maybe the entire casing does. I set them up all the time at work. *edit: I checked and they’re 250 solid steel road covers not including the frame and I’ve been picking up both together. I honestly didn’t think it was that heavy. I’m 6’6 250lbs and I’m an equipment operator. Maybe I’m just stronger than I think idk. I’ve never been to a gym but I was raised on a farm.
Manhole covers are not usually square for various reasons, and their design is a result of practical considerations, safety concerns, and engineering principles. 1. Structural Integrity: Circular shapes provide inherent structural strength and stability compared to square ones. A circular manhole cover distributes the load evenly across its surface, ensuring it can support heavy loads like vehicles passing over it. In contrast, square covers may be more prone to deformation and cracking due to stress concentration at their corners. 2. Rotation Prevention: Circular manhole covers cannot fall through the manhole opening since their diameter is larger than the hole's diagonal. This design prevents the cover from accidentally slipping into the hole, which could cause accidents or damage to underground infrastructure. 3. Cost-effectiveness: Casting circular manhole covers is generally more cost-effective than producing square ones. Circular molds are easier and cheaper to manufacture, reducing production expenses, and simplifying the overall manufacturing process. 4. Ease of Handling: Circular manhole covers are easier to handle by workers and maintenance crews. Their shape allows for convenient rolling or lifting without the risk of getting stuck in the hole, which could happen with square covers due to their sharp edges. 5. Alignment: When replacing a circular manhole cover, workers can simply rotate it to align with the opening, making the reinstallation process more straightforward. On the other hand, square covers may require precise positioning and alignment, which could be time-consuming and challenging. 6. Avoiding Tripping Hazards: Square manhole covers could potentially create tripping hazards if not perfectly flush with the ground surface. Circular covers eliminate this concern since their uniform shape prevents any protruding edges. 7. Universal Standard: Circular manhole covers have become a universal standard in many countries and municipalities due to their long-standing usage. Adopting a single standardized shape makes it easier for manufacturers, suppliers, and maintenance personnel to coordinate and interchange covers seamlessly. 8. Historical Precedence: The widespread use of circular manhole covers has historical roots, dating back to ancient Rome. Roman engineers employed circular covers for their aqueducts and sewer systems, and this design choice has endured over the centuries. In conclusion, the circular shape of manhole covers offers numerous advantages over square ones, including structural integrity, safety, cost-effectiveness, ease of handling, and historical precedence. These factors have led to the continued dominance of circular manhole covers in modern urban infrastructure.
What's nice is when the word SEWER is centered on top of the manhole cover. Sewer has 5 letters, so it has a middle letter, W. W is a symmetrical letter. If you position a GPS unit under the middle of W's bridge, you get a very accurate reading for the manholes location and, by extension, the sewer mains that feed into and out of it, for GIS maps.
I am a GIS professional that has worked for one city or another for the past 20+ years. A guy that collected sewer infrastructure told me about this tip a few years ago. Most US cities have GPS'd most, if not all, of their assets in GIS layers.
For sure, but at that scale, do a few inches/cm make any meaningful difference? When working with sewers, manholes are visible on the surface, so any construction crew would immediately notice the slight error on-site and correct it.
When you’re talking about a whole fricking city’s branches of sewer systems. Yes every mm counts if you wanna be technical. We can only get it down to the cm. That’s why in the field stuff isn’t always exact. But it usually is because of how well our infrastructure has made itself. Also it’s not necessarily for the manholes or connections. The tracking like he said is so they can see how they’re all connected. It’s mapping under the ground so you don’t have to “find anything” cause that’s not good you don’t just find a water or gas or cable connection by breaking it. And the same people aren’t the ones who fix it.

Man hole clovers is so cool and great short man :]
We have a ton of square and rectangle covers in NYC. Also newer covers are composite and vented which makes them significantly lighter.

Kinda interesting how did you find this out
I am a GIS professional that has worked for one city or another for the past 20+ years.
Provided that the city you work for actually cares about accuracy of manhole placement on maps.😅
