Last year, for christmas gifts, I purchased a few of the Mora HD knives and removed the plastic handles and installed wood handles with the same profile as the plastic. Everyone loved them and still use them

Mora pro robust takes that title imo.
Yup, the Robust (carbon) and Companion HD (stainless) are the toughest knifes on the planet for the money. The Robust is more of a working knife. Not suitable for bushcraft, nor food cutting due to rusting and the oxides it leaves.

Been using knives since I was a kid and I’ve never bought two of the same model, until the stainless companion HD. Sure, there are better knives but they’ll cost you 5 or 10 times as much.

These videos are interesting because they show which part of the knives is the weakest and how far the abuse can go. That being said the performance of a knife isn't measured in these tests. A knife is and always will be a rather delicate tool since it main function is cutting and a decent edge retention. Like hunting, i wouldn't use a mora for hunting since it dulls quickly, really doesn't matter if it can stab a car door.

@@Mudsuitable well it really depends what you want to use you knife for. Gutting ten wild boar, splitting wood, fine carving, cutting abrasive materials or maybe rescue tasks or as a weapon. That's the reason why knives are so interesting because they can be made to do all of these things and more but you won't find a super tough, knives that excels at fine carving and still holds and edge forever

In 2012 I was roaming in Scandinavia, bought a new Mora for 10€ in every gasoline station. One of them is still with me. Its good for the traveling stuff, so for me its an Opinel by Sweden. If you use it faiir, no reason for troubles. Check out Cold Steel Pendleton Hunter Lite. Its the same idea. Just when everyone uses Mora I use the Cold Steel. Peacemaker 2 and Pendleton are more expensive, but looks a little stronger! Thank you for the video, Joe! The best say for the review!

You should try bps knives,they have mora profile and are made of 1066 steel,and are little more than mora cost wise.

So it's more likely that bps are actually made with 65G steel and that 1066 is just a western "equivalent" . 65G is a spring steel and supposedly one of the toughest around. Would be an interesting test for sure !
Moras are probably the knives with the best price-performance ratio and here we can (again) see why … 🍻

About extreme flexibility:
„A well-kept secret - The steel is treated to make it harder, tougher and increase edge resiliency. We use two different hardening furnaces: one for stainless steel and one for carbon steel. The actual hardening process is a company secret, as that’s the factor which gives our knives the steel’s unique qualities - such as sharpness, strength and flexibility.“
I think they use at least a two step annealing process which gives a flexible inner core and very tough edge retention which reflects your test result, amigo 🍻

This knife really is very, very hard to kill. Under normal circumstances it will never break on you. Awesome performance for the price, much better than any Tops knife I think ! 👍

Great test Joe! It appears that Mora and Glock use a differential heat treat on their blades which is why they are so tough. A differential heat treat hardens the knife edge but the rest of the blade remains softer and tougher so that it doesn't break. Or, they give it a spring temper. This type of heat treat has long been used by saw blade makers around the world because saw blades have to be really sharp and hard at the cutting edge but flexible on the rest of the blade. Very smart those Austrians and Swedes are:)
As as far as the tip is concerned, bushcraft/wilderness blades do need a very strong tip for digging grubs out of logs or drilling into fireboards to make bow drill fires. Mora has definitely mastered this as demonstrated by your test. Great blade!!!

Mora use 12c27 sandvik stainless and heat treat very well. Similar toughness to 5160 so no surprise on lateral strength. More companies should use the Sandvik steels. Why not try some of the EKA knives Joe, made in Sweden and predominantly use 12c27.

Very tough knife.. One of my favorites. Though I'm in the carbon Mora camp.
It's an excellent stabber, maybe not the best for cars. Though the other video of the Companion HD did get better penetration in the car.
Stabbing through layers of cloths/gear... perfect.
Narrow blades always stab really well (hence the stiletto knife/ sfarziglia napoletana). What the Becker BK2 seems to do effectively on the car, it doesn't do so much in social encounters against 'enemy combatants' wearing layers of tough cothes.

A Nepalese Gurkha couldn't get his Kukri go through a big Taliban's cloths.
The tip was not efficient/penetrating enough when dealing with that type of cloths.
So he chopped at his hands and the Taliban retreated..

If they'd update the rest of their stainless lineup to 14c28n they they could really put everything else to shame. Of course maybe it is pointless if it already fails at the rat tang before the spine. They are probably ultimately right in only bothering switching for their full tang models.

What kinda of tree are you cutting? It looks dense. I hear there are some invasive species from North America ie red oak that are in Europe now, or any oak makes great fire wood and is great for cooking.
