I have an IEP. I feel like a lot of people believe that having an IEP mean that you're not as smart, dont know how to speak, or socialize normally. Students can have an IEP for different reasons. We can also have different accommodations. For me, I have the option to take my test in another room. I also have the option for my test questions to be read to me. However I read it myself because it's easier that way for me. A lot of teachers are very lenient and will allow for other students to do the same even without an IEP. But haveing an IEP just insures that options are available.

I have a iep and I don't think anyone I know in my school with a iep has gotten awards or student of the month like normal students to be honest we get treated like we don't speak English.

I have had IEP since I was I'm 3rd grade and I graduated in 2016 and I had a exit IEP. but I lost the paper work because I didn't think I needed it after highschool but recently I found out until I am 21 I can use my iep with jobs or college that accepts IEP I had iep because I had a speech problem, low math skills, low reading skills, and I could type up essays or vocab words and extra time on tests. But since I lost the paper work how can I get a copy of my IEP to show a job or college or am I out of lucky?

Hi Beth, colleges and universities do not have special education services in the same way as high schools. However, they will have an Office of Disability Services or another department with a similar name. You could submit your IEP from high school to that department as evidence of a disability and they can issue you accommodations such as extra time to compete assignments. However, unlike high school, colleges/ universities will not modify the curriculum or expectations. You can attain a copy of your IEP by contacting the Special Education Department of the school district where you graduated.

What if ur child who hasn’t have any disability, and they just put them in those IEP classes for no reason??

    • @amberpakosz1343

An IEP isn't a type of class. It is the individualized education plan developed to help a student with a disability succeed. In order to receive an IEP the child would have been professionally evaluated with documentation of those results. The parent would have met with the team to go over those results and review and agree to services and accommodations before any IEP goes into place, whether accommodations take place completely within a gen-ed classroom or partially within a special education classroom.A school legally cannot place a student into special education services without an IEP and agreement by the guardian. Part of the documentation and evaluation might include a child receiving RTI (Response to Intervention) before officially qualifying for Special Education services. This is NOT part of an IEP and students that never go onto have an IEP can also receive IEP to help make growth and narrow gaps in reading or math.

If you mean support classes for a specific subject, its probaly because they might be struggling with a class or a few. I have an IEP myself and I think it's a very good thing. There are a lot more student who have an IEP than you would guess. Even though a class may be intended for those who have an IEP, there still might be a few or more other students without one who are in a supporting class.

I have ADHD and I'm not on the IEP or special education system. Just because you have a metal disorder doesn't mean it effects your learning skills.
