Ten Hag certainly takes some of the blame, but (as usual), so does United's recruitment team. Antony was available for about £50m in June, but United said no and panicked after they lost 4-0 to Brentford, then went and spent almost double that on him because they were desperate and gullible.

I always found this argument not very credible. Man Utd bought Lisandro Martinez in july for ~55 mil. I think there was absolutely no chance Ajax would let two of their most important players, go to the same club, in the same transfer window for a little over 100mil. I think that if United were to buy Anthony for 50min, Ajax would have asked ~75mil for Martinez, which might be better since Martinez is close to 75 than Anthony to 85.

@@choke9270It's not about swapping wings. In terms of relying on his left foot, Robben was as predictable as Antony.
Ødegaard also relied exclusively on his left foot. He seems to be doing more than fine.
Relying on his stronger foot isn't the problem. It's his indecisiveness. He keeps making the wrong decision on when to pass, dribble or shoot. His lack of tactical awareness made it worse. Antony doesn't seem to know or care where his teammates are. Robben and Ødegaard screened their teammates all the time so they know their options.

Robben was equally as good on the outside of his food as he was going inside it. That's what made Robben so unpredictable and lethal, because he could turn left or right at the blink of an eye. Seriously go watch his highlights. Robben was anything but predictable.

Robben was only predictable in UA-cam highlights. Like the comment above mentioned he was far from that. His speed and strength alone should be enough to separate him from Anthony. Robben could dribble past anyone at will. I don't believe that anyone who actually saw Robben playing can call him limited and associate his playing style with Anthony's. People should stop watching UA-cam for highlights and come up with bold statements like calling one of the best players of his generation predictable.

His incompetence caused the South Korean national team, possibly the strongest in all of Asia, to get knocked out of the AFC Asian cup in embarassing fashion in the quarter finals. It may be a good result for south Korea, but Klinsman was completely neglective of the national team, and only relied on the star players to get results without giving any tactical advice. Not to mention he spent HALF OF HIS TENURE OF KOREAN NATIONAL TEAM MANAGER IN THE US OF A. IS HE TAKING A GOD DAMN PISS. The South Korean FA sacked him a few days ago, but thanks to him the national team's ego and the player's overall morale has taken a huge hit. The South Korean football fans are absolutely enraged about the FA's decision in the first place to promote Klinsmann as their head coach. He was inconsistent in Bayern Munich and Schalke. I know that it may be a big leap for you to focus on issues outside of European football, but I can't and don't want this issue to be contained just inside Korea. I want the issue to be spread world wide. So it would be great if you could do a video essay about Jurgen's horrendous south korean tenure. Thanks a lot for the great content you make man. keep it up.

Honestly, when he was at Ajax I watched him play every week and for the life of me I didn't see why people were so excited about him. Sure he controls a ball nicely every now and again, but he just doesn't score or assist as much as a winger should. He scored 24 goals in 82 matches for Ajax and only 4 assists. 28 goal contributions for a winger in 82 matches is simply not enough. That's not even a goal or assist every 3 games.

@@jaijeet7459 Ten Hag saw potential. He always said that Antony was very quick on the first few meters which fitted Ajax really well because in the Eredivisie they could play on the opponents half of the pitch. If you can pass your direct opponent as a winger and deliver a cross with just 10 meters of space, that is extremely valuable.
The problems seems to be that Ten Hag A) underestimated how quick your average PL leftback is and B) overestimated how dominant he could play with Manchester United in the PL. Antony just isn't that good when he's far away from the goal.

As an Arsenal supporter, when I see Antony play, I get really strong Nicolas Pepé flashbacks.
Partly because the transfer fee was absurdly high, partly because you can see what their main problem is - they are not used to playing against decent defenders.
As for the transfer fee - we know that our former sporting director (ex-Barcelona Raul Sanllehi) signed Pepe and he actually somehow got part of the transfer fee as a consultant fee - when Arsenal got wind of this, they fired him immediately.
Everyone could see that he was not worth 72 million pounds, even Lille who asked for a smaller price, but Sanllehi insisted on paying a greater fee knowing he would pocket a couple of millions afterwards as a consultant.
I hope this did not happen in the case of Antony and the sporting dir. of ManU.
As for these players' ability to dribble past opponents - Pepé was used to the French league and believe me - PL defenders are much, much better in every way than those guys over in France, especially the smaller teams.
It was much easier for Pepé to do a trick, a feint, or just go past them with the ball.
Same goes for Antony who could be king in the Netherlands, playing against the smaller clubs and their defenders.
But the PL ain't the Eredivisie and he simply cannot seem to be able change his game against people who can actually defend really well.
To summarise: Pepe was a decent 20-25 mil player who could have been an FA Cup / Europa League mainstay player but probably not the star player everyone expected him to be - based on the transfer fee which was not really his fault to be honest.
Antony in reality would have been worth around 25-30 mil but he had had 1 (!) very good season and ManU forked out the big wonga for him.
If you look at him as a signing for his real value - yeah, he is just about there, nothing special, would star against Championship oppositions in the cup and would (and does) struggle against PL level defenders.

He was good for the first few months at United, but he's been figured out. Now every defender in the league knows he can only use his left foot, which makes him the easiest winger to defend in the league. The problem is his left foot isn't even that good- Arjen Robben was similar, very little right foot to speak of, but his left foot was the best in the world. Antony's left foot is average and his right might as well be amputated. Also his decision making is quite bad, dribbles when he should pass, does a spin when he should run, etc. I don't think he's AS bad as some people say but I think he's not good enough for the prem. This is a united fan, for reference.

If you look at our best attacking performances (Wolves A, Everton A, Aston Villa H etc. ), we always play fast passing counterattacks, which is why Rashford, Hojlund and Garnacho are performing. For starters, United themselves valued Antony at £25m. Could have gotten him for slightly more than that but decided to play hardball. As the transfer window wore on, his price went to £50M. United could still have paid a tad more to secure his service but decided to play hardball again because they felt they could have gotten him nearer to his initial value if they had just paid the asking price then. As the transfer window drew to a close, ajax took United for a ride because they knew United was desperate and held for £85M. Not being able to play hardball anymore, United paid up. That's how united paid so much for a circus clown who is more interested in performing monkey tricks (even in training) than actually do what he is paid for. He lacks pace to beat defenders. His dribbling is predictable as everyone knows only one of his feet works. No vision to play the incisive pass.
Yes United should bear most of the blame because of their poor transfer decisions. But ETH's insistence on Antony is equally atrocious. To show even poorer judgement, he signed onana & sofyan arambat. Yes, he did sign hojland, but after throwing a tons of darts, one is bound to hit the board.

Even if all of the managers you've had are to blame, surely someone at the club then has to take responsibility for granting so much recruitment power to the managers. It always boils down to the manager in football. If the recruitment is great - amazing, GOAT manager work. If the recruitment is bad - the manager doesn't cut it, I knew it!

I literally hadn't seen a footballer worse than Antony, he doesn't contibute, his stats are shit, and (allegedly) a domestic abuser, say all you want about anyone else but at least mostly they contibute, doesn't cost 80 mil or at least a decent person and baller

What's keeping Antony down is his brazillian heritage, ironically. He would be a great dribbler if he just focused on perfecting body feints like Messi or Robben. Instead, he keeps trying to do fancy stuff and failing miserably. He has a short build, he is made for body feints and rapid acceleration. Elasticos and fancy spinning moves aren't his thing, he needs to wake up. He's letting the entirety of Brazil down with his horrible antics.

As a Newcastle fan, this video has taught me:
Antony is as one footed and limited as Miggy Almiron, without the pace.
Antony is a knob head. Bruno also grew up poor in Brazil (dad was a taxi driver), but he turned out a nice guy where as Antony, apparently, isn't.

Could be alot better after Ajax, age fame and good support guidance, where missing. And the transfer number had also a big role in the physical off the player

i think if bernardo silva had no mentorship, discipline, football iq, experience or any tactical nouse whatsoever and didnt know his role in the team, i think youre left with a player not too far off anthony. he clearly isnt completely useless and like bernardo silva he can dribble, is mostly one-footed and not the quickest. the difference is bernardo has had 8 years learning from the best tactical mastermind in history and anthony just doesnt have anything close to that in ten hag, nor does he have a defined role in the team that allows him to play to his strengths like bernardo does. while he is a frustrating and overpriced player, in the right team i think he could make more of himself.
