I don't hate Gonta, I actually like him, but I'm glad for the people who do hate him, because Danganronpa fandom either doesn't care about him or loves him and finally those who don't fit into either of those two categories found someone who shares their opinion. It's always cool to discover like minded people. (For example I love Kiyotaka but hate Kiyondo and whenever I come across people who do too I'm like heeey, based!!)
Just to play devil's advocate, Kokichi believed in Gonta 's words about the small bugs , which turned out to be the Nanokumas, then later went to Miu to build the bombs that disabled them. These were very useful for the final two trials.
If I may, I'd like to sing Ryoma's praises, both to explain why he's my favorite character of all time, and also to potentially provide either of you with reasons to like him. Which may not happen, but I at least feel compelled to share. When it comes to characters, their personalities, development, and how well they're written matters much more to me than their relevance in the story. Yes, Ryoma's impact in the story was very miniscule, but I feel that was an intentional choice that feels in line with his character. While Ryoma was chill and polite, he still went the extra mile to keep everyone at arm's length and not let anyone get close to him. He didn't want anyone to get attached to him, because as far as he knew, the story was gonna end either with him dead or him back in prison. So because he made an effort to not make an impact on anyone's lives, his death wasn't at the forefront of most of the cast's minds when compared to the deaths of the people they DID get close to. In terms of his character, I really like the subversion on the whole "brooding guy who pushes everyone away" trope. Since he's not mean or rude about it, and even offers life advice to anyone who sticks around to talk to him. And his pushing people away is both a defense mechanism and an attempt at preventing history from repeating itself. Since, after all, his family and lover were hunted down by the mafia purely for associating with him. Despite said mafia having been massacred by his hands, Ryoma likely has that unconscious feeling of "the people who hang around me get put in danger," which would be hard to shake off. Though if you wanna talk contributions, since you were singing Miu's praises for guessing the culprits correctly in the cases she was in, let's at least acknowledge what Ryoma managed to do. He was the only person who both suspected Tsumugi (the case's true culprit), and also was partially correct in his Rebuttal Showdown. The culprit did indeed go back into hiding after killing Rantaro, and rejoined everyone by acting like they just ran in. Hell, while he was ultimately wrong about his later suspicions of Shuichi, the reasoning he gave for suspecting him were so ironclad that Kaede outright had to LIE in order to refute him. It shows that he's got a really good sense of deductive reasoning, and likely would've been super helpful in the other trials if he was around for them. I really appreciate the sense of sad realism Ryoma takes in response to the killing game, particularly with the knowledge that according to the rules, only a maximum of two people could survive. While he didn't necessarily WANT to die (at least, not until after seeing his motive video), he knew that his survival would be at the expense of others. Those two factors are what ultimately led to him offering up his life both on the last day of the time limit, since he knew the chances of him being one of the two survivors were low to begin with. And this is on top of him viewing his life as having inherently less worth compared to everyone else's, both because he's a prisoner and a mass-murderer. And yet, that offer of his speaks to the kind of person he is. Despite trying to avoid forming attachments with anyone, Ryoma was still willing to sacrifice himself for a group of strangers he literally met a few days ago. It wasn't something he offered lightly, he waited until the last possible day out of a vain hope that everyone could escape like Kaede wanted--he said so himself. And the moment when Rantaro provided a potential alternative, he took back his offer, possibly wanting to put his faith in whatever he had planned. Only for Rantaro to wind up dead, with Ryoma even lampshading the fact that he essentially survived at his expense. While it's in his FTEs that his survivor's guilt truly gets explored, he still displays hints of it here. Which ultimately may be the reason why he tried so hard to find something to live for in the second chapter. To prove to himself that there's something worth sticking around for, something that could justify him outliving Rantaro and Kaede, and surviving at their expense. When the motive videos were introduced, he thought that they were the same for everyone. Despite all his loved ones being dead, there still could be a friend or former teammate who survived or still cared about him. Only to get proven wrong upon watching it, which broke his spirit completely. Enough for him to immediately take the closest opportunity for his life, or death, to have meaning. So when Kirumi gave him a chance to sacrifice himself for the sake of his home country and its leader, he let her kill him. Which is ultimately still a complete arc, just not one with a happy ending. It's a tragic story about a person who ultimately lost everything due to his own actions, and eventually succumbed to his mental illnesses despite his best efforts to overcome them. I could go on, honestly. But this comment is already extremely long, even without me truly delving into his FTEs or any of the other side material.
Gonta on the thumbnail looks surprised but he actually would be understanding of you putting him in F tier considering his low opinion of himself (one of his standart voice lines is literally "Gonta's an idiot!..")
Not gonna lie, this is actually the best tier list of Danganronpa V3 i ever seen. I love analysis and objective things, there are a lot of them in this tier list imo
The issue with Kaede is that during the DRoD, she was forcing everyone to continue despite being tired or injured. If she allowed those who wanted to continue, continue, that would be one thing. But forcing everyone to go as hard as they could regardless of the cost breeds resentment, desperation to escape through any means necessary, and creates a divide between the students. It would be like the Student Council all over again: Kaede, Angie, Kaito, Tenko, Shuichi, Rantaro, Gonta, Tsumugi, Kirumi versus Himiko, Miu, Kiibo, Kokichi, Ryoma, Kiyo, Maki. I think letting Kaede take control of the students long-term would've been incredibly dangerous and toxic, especially without someone to give her a reality check. PS. I know the exact post Ethan is referencing with Kokichi lol
seeing gage's top three, my mind immediately went to the fanfic "i'd trade my life for yours". i think gage would loove that fanfic :') also putting gonta in f tier is so incredibly based, i love almost every character in this game to bits but i CANNOT stand him.
1:18:37 i think? i know which post you're talking about and maan i loved it so much lol. every time i watch a v3 lets play i love looking at certain kokichi scenes and seeing his leadership skills on display
What I don’t understand about Kirumi’s motivation to kill is that all of the cast (except Angie who seems to be from a fictional Polynesian/Pacific Islander nation) are citizens of Japan… so she would be killing a bunch of the people she’s supposed to help and serve… I guess you could explain it by saying that Kirumi is willing to sweep eggshells under the rug for the ‘greater good’, but her attitude of wanting to help people always seemed genuine to me and not like a crooked politician
I heard that Gonta wasn't a caveman trope in Japan, plenty of characters refer to themselves in third person but Gonta was the only character in the franchise to keep it in the English translation. Still doesn't redeem the character that much, still kinda forgettable among the rest of the characters. Could be wrong I only watch youtube videos so don't take it as fact.
Kirumi and Ryoma were such nothing burger characters, Ryomas character arc was just “i’m suicidal and then I die”. and Kirumi had 0 impact on the killing game as a whole, nobody even brings her up after she dies LOL
And then put Tenko, Who, showed in the love hotel mode, has a desire to be with her brother, In S Also all incest counts I've found so far are The monokubs Korekiyo Tsumugi Tenko 2 of them are in the love hotel mode you can check istg wth is this tier list 💀

33:47 while i loooove shuuichi and everything literally my beloved, i think fuyuuhiko's was better honestly. But shuuichi's in the final chapter was more satisfying
Ethan literally my tier list. The only difference would be monokuma I think he deserves to be at least above the monokubs. Not monotaro because he is the goat!
1:04:51 personally i felt like the training thing was too overdone it's seriously boring , shuuichi was so much more interesting without kaito aka chapter 1 and chapter 6. But kaito is very intriguing, an interesting character on his own and a very good plot device paired with kokichi
People in DR V3 kept warning Gonta away from Kokichi, yet 5 mins after, Gonta just follows Kokichi's orders like a dog. What a character, why can't he be in place of Kaede so at least a worthwhile character has more screen time and development?
42:30 well this is so sad bcuz that was never his character to begin with and I dislike the translation so hard, he spoke normally and literally the only thing he didn't know about is computers cuz he doesn't work with em much otherwise he's just too naive for his own good like tenko But dude If you put him anywhere besides F tho I'll feel so betrayed and click baited Also i Don get the whole tricked thing? He wanted to be their saviour, helpful of some kind . But pretty sure he wouldn't mind if everyone stayed alive to make their own decisions instead. But god yes he's so static!!!! He's like, on the same lvl on ryoma when it comes to that imo
If he wasn't tricked to do something that dumb, its equally as much reason not to like him imo...deciding to kill everyone on his own after being warned not to trust kokichi many times is kinda selfish and short sighted. Still, I do wish I could've seen the not dumb version of him
