    I returned to a company after a year because I missed the ‘culture’ and it had completely changed. Took a pay cut and a step backwards in responsibility and it was the worse career decision I’ve ever made. Just now digging out the hole 2 years later.

    This guy is talking about me lol. I left chasing more money and prestige but realized I miss my old job's autonomy, flexibility, remote work, and culture. 😅 I have a chance to go back but waiting to hear back on pay. Willing to take a pay cut but not less than what I made initially at my old job.

    My old job wanted me back that I quit last summer. I’m not going back to a toxic ex bf. And that’s how it is. They might act nice for a short period like an ex toxic bf but then go back to their toxicity. They couldn’t pay me. Plus the mockery you’d have to deal with when you come back. People talking behind your back saying “look who couldn’t get ahead in life and decided to come back…” I’m not putting up with that.

    This video hit the spot. I left a lower paying government job with a lot of family time, for a job with more money. 4 months into this job and I question it every day. It’s tough imagining going back but I guess this is life and one of its many challenges. Thank you for this excellent video Brendan.

      I'm in the sane situation. I left my government during the beginning of the Pandemic. Now I have an opportunity to come back to my old job and work from home for 90 percent of time. I'm just concerned about the work environment for the days I have to come in the office.

    Boomerang here also. I asked myself the exact same questions your are talking about, the same reflection you are stating. I brought a fresh perspective to that company and try to share it to others. I also fell into the same traps you talk about but, with that step back and experience i acquired in other companies, i was able to better manage those situations and make the best out of it. I’m 3 years in and time will tell if i did a good move but for now, i’m good with it :-)

    I left a steady job because of its toxic environment and practically no career progression. I went to a smaller company that gave me the progression I want and the working environment that I ant. A couple years down the road, the company I left seems to be getting better from the outside, at least when it comes to profits and benefits, while the one I am at is stagnating a treading water. The temptation to go back remains there, but man, this video sure helped remind me on why I left in the first place.

    I was laid off 10 months ago from a large corporation after 26.5 years of continuous employment. This was due to a site closure (everyone top down unfortunately was let go); the company was extremely gracious giving me over a year notice, 9 months' salary, continued insurance for 9 months, and job placement assistance. I started a new job that I enjoy at a much higher salary immediately upon separation, but the commute is brutal (1 hour each way compared to 10 mins at my old company). Out of nowhere my old company (different division - but one I worked closely with and know a lot of the associates) called me up and asked me to apply for a different higher-level position but in a similar field that fits my skillset perfectly. At first, I was thinking 'no don't go backwards', but then something told me to hear what they had to say. The panel interview was a sham. No interview questions were asked, more like how ya been type of thing. They were simply ticking boxes of going through the process. The next day they offered to bridge my seniority, match my current salary (plus a little more), restore my 27 vacation days (plus 11 paid holidays and 7 paid personal days), but me on the manager level bonus program (while having no direct reports), and the cherry on top they are giving me office space 10 mins from my home, and I can work there or from home as much as I want. I start June 19th. Don't dismiss anything out of hand, there is never any harm in listening to what a former employer has to say. I know it will be different and challenging, but some companies are cut from a different cloth. Sometimes you can go home.

    I just left a job in security for one in banking. While there is a potential career path, I don’t like all the rules and control that this new job has on offer. I used to be much more free to do what I want, and had a much more fun work culture. I’m not sure if I should become a boomerang.

    I did, sort of.
    I, along with others in my dept asked for a raise, but we ended up not getting it so I changed depts making better money. I hated the new job and watched my former team everyday, missing what i used to do. I ended up asking my former supervisor to take me back despite a paycut from my current postion but did end up with a slight bump from my previous wage I had with that particular dept. It proved to me that grass was definitely not greener on thd other side.

    I left because I was a contractor and there were no permanent vacancies in my city at the time. There are now, so if I did choose to go back in the future I would be permanent staff, also I would be doing a different job, so the reasons I left would no longer be there.

    • @BrendanEllis
      @BrendanEllis 2 роки тому +2

      So it all boils down to are you trying to convince to take the job i.e., you don't reallly want to but think you should, or are you trying to convince yourself not to take the job i.e., you really want to take it but are checking the reasons not to.
      This means you are being objective about the reasons for taking it. Does that help?

      This is a difficult decision Hkap. You need to do what is right for you. My only thought is what makes you happy and where do you learn them most?
      Getting more money will only satisfy for so long but being unhappy or bored in a role can easily outweigh the extra $.
      Personally I took a job for money once and lasted 11 months as was bored as hell. I would say enjoy what you do, be really good at it and the money will come.
