Just soak your hands with water for 2 minutes. It will hydrate to the depths of your skin and give you a long lasting grip for Hand Drilling. "KISS" is in action here as I demonstrate this very easy solution to what's been a very real and long term problem for me.

David i think you must have been a firefighter to love starting fires like you do. This is coming from a retired firefighter. I love your mastery of so many ways to get a fire started. I have been watching your videos for many years. I've learned a lot.

    1. hydrate hands 2. scrape away fibers on stick which act like a rotary brush.
Always more to learn from each video. Thank you Mr.West!

David, this is the 1st video that shows the technique perfectly..before I tried the Rae Dawn Chong way from the movie
"Quest for fire" but could never drill that long, my hands would get to hot.
    Thank you sir.

Tremendous... I always love the friction technique. Who'd of thought, water helps you make fire.

That is so brilliant it makes me feel stupid not thinking of it. I do see one problem if it cold like you use in your example having your hands in cold water is probably not the best solution for life or death fire. This would be the only time I could thing I would be desperate enough to need a hand drill fire. Great idea keep them coming.

I mentioned that you could wet your hands and hold them together for 2 minutes or hold a wet rag.

David, I just wanted to share some info on the wet "wrinkled" fingertips. It's not actually the water that soaks in to your fingers that does it. It's actually a neurological "switch" as a reaction to your hands being wet. Your skin loosens to increase the ability to grip when your hands are wet and your brain turns that functionality on.

Awesome demonstration - first you get good then you get David West good! I know some tribes would used two rods tied together as a hearth board so they could use the same material as the spindle. One Apache fellow could get a fire in 20 seconds that way. Have you ever tried that method? I didn't see it in the playlist.
