    Hardness' and Concept albums showcased their musical diversity. Afro Cuban, Soul, Jazz, and the purest Funk. Still rock with them even 47 years later👍

    Slave is definitely one the greatest Funk bands ever and I remember their first album and the cover art was amazing! The first album I bought with my own money was “ ShowTime “by Slave! Salute 🫡 to the members of Slave , past and present who contributed to the music! Thank you Scott for another great interview! ✊🏾

    I really admire him for his honesty about making a living and being proud of making rational decisions. Thomas is still one of my funk heroes.

    I am the biggest Slave fan since childhood and I'm always looking for a interview with Slave members and especially the ones that went to Aurra and Steve Washington. Tom Locket always had the cool hair perm. LOL. Great insight.

    Nothing to be embarrassed about. There is a company that I used to work for. I remember my manager telling me, one of The Jones Girls used to work here. I don’t remember which one but it was mentioned in their episode of Unsung.

    My buddies and I are still debating to this very day.... I told them it sounds like Drac is using a fuzz pedal with an early pitch shifter and slap-back delay.

    Parliament-Funkadelic may be the greatest funk band of all time, but Slide is the greatest (or 2nd behind Holy Ghost) funk song ever. I was always amazed that most of the guys in Slave were still in high school.

    I didn’t know Slide was released in February 1977. I clearly remember hearing it the for first time the summer of 1977. In fact the stations here played played “Son of Slide” before Slide. Maybe it took time to make its way south.

    Dayton is the Funk Capital of the World!!!

  • @chrisa4695
    @chrisa4695 7 місяців тому +1

    Cincinnati made a major contribution to Funk as well. Although Natti did not have the same impact as Dayton, they were significant. Cincinnati gave us Bootsy’s Rubber Band and later The Deele. Some of the member of Midnight Star were from Cincinnati as well. Isley Brothers were from Cincinnati but relocated to New Jersey. That 50 mile stretch of I-75 is special. Marvin Craig from Lakeside is from Cincinnati.

    Luther had his group Luther in 77. Change didn’t come out until 1980

    • @gtizzle7606
      @gtizzle7606 8 місяців тому

      This was exactly what I wanted to say. He was either thinking about the group Luther which made sense because they were also on the Cotillion label, or he was talking about Chic since Luther arranged all the bkg vocals and went out on tour with them 76, 77

  • @chrisa4695

    Back in the day when young kids formed a band, you would 2-3 guitar players. The least proficient would switch to bass. I don’t know if that was the case with Slave.

    no disrespect to Thomas, but let’s give respect to ALL who are due.
    it was LABELLE, not just Patti.
    Sarah and Nona were there too.
    it was RUFUS and Chaka Khan, not simply Chaka.
    also, the non-mention of Danny Webster, both by Thomas and Scott, who was an integral member of the group, was disappointing.
    aside from playing lead and rhythm guitar, Danny did most of the lead vocals prior to Steve Arrington arriving.
    Danny and Steve’s co-vocals on “for the love of u” was a masterpiece.

    • @chrisa4695
      @chrisa4695 7 місяців тому

      Agreed. Too many of Rufus featuring Chaka Khan’s hit are often credited to Chaka Khan the solo artist. At least one appears on one her solo compilations. LaBelle broke up in 1976 or 1977. All three immediately launched solo careers. It’s quite possible they did shows with Patti LaBelle the solo artist. But, I get you. I am a big stickler on the group is one entity and the solo artist is another.

      honestly, Chaka khan is one amazing vocalist however I just find her music with the group Rufus better. RUFUS was and is such an underrated musician! you have the likes of prince who even said Rufus inspired a lot of his guitar playing which is so sick!

    • @jimy0803
      @jimy0803 Місяць тому

      @@thebarkaysfan1100 i agree. tbh, personally, i would be hard-pressed to be find an artist who or whom i felt was “better” as a soloist, than they were with the group they originally came from.
