Fusion 360 vs. Easel on the X-Carve - LMSAT

  • I've been running my x-carve for almost a year now and finally decided to try out using fusion 360 CAM vs inventable's web based software Easel.
    I noticed that after editing (and publishing) the video, all of the speed were listed incorrectly. The text on screen should be in in/min not m/min. Do not try running your x-carve at 49m/min (1929.13in/min)!
    If you want more help on CAM with fusion 360 for the x-carve, let me know and I can do more dedicated videos on it.

    Using the sketch pattern function in Fusion 360 would have made modeling this part even faster. There is also a pattern function in CAM, for instance if you wanted to make multiple identical parts at once. Patterning totally changed the way I work in Fusion 360.

      +micvee yeah, I come from a print design background and thought it was easier in illustrator. I've been getting way into fusion on the last two years and it is changing my thought process.

    • @lavachemist
      @lavachemist 6 років тому

      You could still draw your sketches in Illustrator if you really wanted to. Just export the drawing from Illustrator as a DXF and import directly into your design file using the "insert" function in Fusion 360.

      +micvee yup. Very familiar with that.

    This was my first attempt at using Fusion 360 CAM on the x-carve. Please note that the onscreen feed-rates are incorrectly listed in m/min, they should be in/min. If you want to learn more about this, let me know and I can do a more detailed video.

    At 5:47 your whole waste board is moving like crazy.

    • @letsmakesomethingawesometo8266
      @letsmakesomethingawesometo8266  7 років тому

      My waste board is fully trashed. I've been meaning to replace it for a few months now. It is strange how much it moves, yet it doesn't (usually) effect the tolerance on the final part.

    • @Jenus85
      @Jenus85 7 років тому +2

      Well the tolerances is probably off the same amount as the board is moving.

    In your opinion where would be the best place to start learning fusion 360 and easel for purposes similar to your projects

    • @letsmakesomethingawesometo8266
      @letsmakesomethingawesometo8266  7 років тому +1

      +Theycallmeernie88 Autodesk has great youtube tutorials on using fusion. But I'd recommend just playing around with fusion to learn it. Pick a thing you want to recreate and try to make it in fusion.
      Easel is dead simple, I mostly just use it to import svg files on my xcarve, but the inventables website has tutorials on that as well.

      Awesome thanks. I'm looking at getting an x carve to make cool stuff but I want to get familiar with all of the software as much as I can before getting the actual machine.

    Dude. is about teaching, You go at the speed of light. If people come here to seek information, it is because we do not know. For next time try to teach. I could not understand absolutely anything, because you speak very fast you have an accelerated video and then you say that you are not going to go into details in this video. My question is what is the purpose of this video. I swear it made me dizzy trying to understand what you were saying.

      The intent was a comparison between two ways of running parts on the xcarve, not an in depth tutorial on how to use each.

    Fusion 360, is written for people that already know how it all works. it is a nightmare to even comprehend what is going on. like a tech manual for other techs. Easel is the opposite end. easy to use, but they keep your ideas. currently using v-carve. it is the middle of the road. you still need two other programs, to get ready to use v-carve. Gimp is my fav.

    One suggestion that can speed up your Fusion sketching: draw only one of the two parts, use the "mirror" tool to duplicate it, then draw the recesses. Takes half the time, and even better if you change a dimension on one the other will change automatically.
    My experience matches yours: the default tool speeds and feeds in Fusion are for heavy-duty metal CNC machines, and are often way too aggressive. You'll need to do some trial-and-error to create a custom tool library for your machine and toolbits.

      +Jason Goodman I've been running a tormach cnc at work for the last 8 months, due to that, my xcarve hasn't gotten much love lately.

      Even beyond mirror, you can use rectangular pattern to get all the holes the same

    Do you have a video of how to setup your xcarve on fusion or just how to use fusion with xcarve?

    • @letsmakesomethingawesometo8266
      @letsmakesomethingawesometo8266  5 років тому

      Not really, but I should make one. It is a little difficult because you need to program feeds & speeds manually, program the tool paths and use the correct post processor.

    Tu mesa o base de la X-Carve está suelta, necesita ser atornillada tal vez por eso los cortes no están saliendo bien... Saludos amigo.

      +Erik Quintana adjusting the potentiometers for the stepper motors helps. It might be time for me to upgrade to the new motor controller, seems like even with correct voltage I'll lose steps randomly.

      Thanks after a good time calibrating I have "perfect" circles thank you very much, I am still away from the new controller maybe in another year. Greetings and I keep watching.

    Is there a learning software specifically for the individual who has never touched a cnc?

    • @letsmakesomethingawesometo8266
      @letsmakesomethingawesometo8266  5 років тому

      UA-cam 😁. But on a more serious note, none that I know of. Easel is very user friendly, that is what I started with when I first started. Then just learned with hands on experience and a ton of trial and error.

    Do you find that carving in fusion 360 is noticably faster? Not due to in/per min but due to the software creating more efficient passes based on the bit you are using?

    • @letsmakesomethingawesometo8266
      @letsmakesomethingawesometo8266  4 роки тому

      I feel that it creates more efficient toolpaths, plus you have more control over it...so long story short, yes.

    i have the x-carve and regularly cut oak at 100 inches per minute, up to 1/4 inch depth with 1/4, 1/8th etc endmills and get terrific results (1/2 bit diameter stepovers). My x-carve is completely factory without any stiffening mods etc. I couldnt tell here but are you using the optional precision collet or the adapter that comes with the x-carve? The adapter is total crap and causes a lot of chatter etc requiring crazy slow speeds, once i switched to the collet things i was able to really turn up the speeds and feeds a lot.

    It looks like you may be using the wrong kind of bit for wood, it looks like you are using a single flute carbide end mill. From the inventables website: "This bit is not recommended for wood because it pulls the wood fibers causing tear out." I would recommend switching to an upcut fish tail spiral bit.

    Can you make money with a machine like this or should you get a more expensive commercial grade machine?

    • @letsmakesomethingawesometo8266
      @letsmakesomethingawesometo8266  5 років тому +1

      I guess it kind of depends on what you want to make. It is definitely a hobby grade machine with limited abilities. Tool changes, workholding, cut area, and feed rates are a big downside with this machine. However, small projects are great on this. These little swiss army style key organizers sell pretty well and I randomly get requests for one off / prototype work that are fairly profitable. The key organizers are less than $2 in materials and about 10-15 minutes of work and sell for $25. When I run prototypes, I charge material cost plus $60/hr machine time.
      I paid off the machine with 3-4 jobs I had lined up before purchasing it. But unless you have products/ideas/jobs lined up, it might be tricky to turn a profit. Still a fun thing to have around for making all kinds of useful things.

      This wasn't really meant as being a beginner's tutorial, if it was fully in-depth it would have been at least a 30 minute video. It is more of a comparison between the two different softwares, with the assumption of knowledge of both easel and Fusion 360. There are plenty of great tutorials on CAM with fusion out there.
