How about the Miami Arena? Housed 2 new expansion teams (Heat, Panthers). Lasted 10 years. I saw Nick Faldo & Phil Mickelson hit balls at halftime of a Heat game. Tiger was there, too. The Doral PGA tournament was there at the time. 10 years is nuts.

The best thing about RFK was the relatively convenient access/central location. Tons of parking, freeway access and when the metro opened about 1976 the Stadium/Armory subway site. Because the stadium was there long before the Metro, they were able to custom build the subway station specifically for the large crowds as it was/is the largest station in the system. In addition, the station was located on the orange and blue lines - 2 of the busiest - which provided relatively quick and convenient access from the more populated portions of the suburbs. So when they build the new football stadium I hope they put it on the RFK site.

RFK Stadium witnessed so many glorious moments in Redskins history - so many legendary games, five NFC Championships, countless incredible memories! The highest scoring game in NFL history, the "seat cushion" game, and who could ever forget the 1982 NFC Championship against the dallas cowgirls, 45 thousand people chanting "We want Dallas! We want Dallas!", the entire stadium shaking and rocking and going up and down...those were the days! Hail to the Redskins!

Stadiums have been a curious concept since the Roman times. For me, the perplexing thing is if you attend them for the sport you watch, you think they are the pulsing life-spirit of a community. But if you wander past in the 95% of hours when a game is not on, they are a void, bleak wasteland.

I was think of it like Highbury for the Arsenal Gunners. It was a small venue but for Arsenal and Washington it was a house of pain for the opponents. The Redskins lost ONE time in the playoffs at RFK and it was against the Bears in 1984. So EVERY year they played a home game in the playoffs at RFK 72,82,83,86, 87,91 they won every time. 72,82,83,87,91 they played the NFC championship at home and they made the Super Bowl. For Arsenal and Washington once they moved out those stadiums, they just were not the same. Washington has had won ONE time at Fed Ex at home since 97 which was 1999 in the wildcard game against the Lions.

I was a Cowboys fans who grew up in MD, but went to many Redskins games during their heyday as my family had season tickets dating back to Griffith Stadium. RFK was the definition of a home field advantage. But once they moved to FedEx, the energy was gone. And my family's seats had gone from being pretty decent (upper deck but only 10 rows back, 25 yard line) to way up high up in the end zone. My grandfather gave them up after one season and passed away soon after. I can't even blame Snyder for it because he wasn't the owner yet.

I read an extraordinary account of a Stones concert there in the summer of 1972. Barricades were put up in front of the stage as a security measure for the Stones. Except the barricades had actual spikes protruding outward towards the audience. When the crowd surged forward as the Stones came on, the people in the front were pushed forward by the people in back and were impaled by the spikes. There were no deaths but many injuries and bloodshed. Insane.

My proposal after demolition: Build a stadium similar to either Lucas Oil Stadium or US Bank Stadium. This way the DMV (DC/Maryland/Virginia area) can host Super Bowls, concerts, and other major events like NCAA Final Four or WWE events. This should definitely bring revenue to the area and actually bring back the soon to be named Washington football organization back into the city because FedEx Field is definitely a crappy stadium

Went there several dozen times in 2005-2006-2007 when it served as the Washington Nationals' baseball stadium. Looking around at the park, I could not imagine what it must have been like for a jam-packed, sold-out Redskins game. The concourses were all narrow, the bathrooms were small, etc. On the other hand it had a huge parking lot for tailgating, which a lot of new stadiums don't have since they're built downtown.

that last bit about building a new stadium over top of it frustrates me, cuz everything about the WFT is corrupt as they come, whether it's the owner, how they've maintained FedEx Field despite being built in 1997! Or the team itself! But whatever, if they build a new stadium there I hope they don't spend $1+Billion on it with another retractable roof/fancy dome...
Sorry, new stadiums just bug me, even though I still support Cowboy's Stadium's construction and necessity vs Texas Stadium, I blame Jerry Jones for the increase in new stadiums costing over $1B, the difference is that Jerry's World LOOKS like it costs $1B, every other stadium looks like Money Laundering.

I spent a lot of great time in that stadium as my dad was a season tickets holder for the Redskins and the Senators since the 50's when Griffith stadium was in use. When they moved to D.C. stadium they let him hand pick our seats as he was the Lincoln National Life Group insurance representative for the players health plan. 2nd level, shady side, front row, 30 yard line above the owners box. Best seats in the house. I went 11 seasons without missing a single Redskins game as the only way you could see it back then was to be at the stadium as TV blacked it out for local viewing. Great memories. That stadium would rock and we could get so loud that the opposing quarterback couldn't think. We lost the Senators as people didn't want to go to the night games as the D.C. police wouldn't provide the security needed.

Riverfront was a crummy park. Anybody with a sorry excuse for a camera was allowed onto the field one very, very sunny day. Dave Concepcion is a really big guy! My lasting memory looking up into the stands in somewhat claustrophobic surroundings: tremendous HEAT bouncing off the fake turf. Wow. Imagine spending hours down there, maybe playing extra innings or even double-headers in such extremely warm weather.

Not mentioned was that one section of seats inside RFK moves on rails when changing from football to baseball. After the second Senators baseball team left, the seats were put into football configuration and left there for like 20 + years. They even played a demo or old timers game in the football configuration.
So, when the Nationals were created, there was a lot of worry that the seats would have stuck in the Football configuration. But apparently, they were well built for apparently the seats moved around pretty easily.
But all-in-all, it was a pretty bad stadium.

    • @oscarwinner2034
      @oscarwinner2034 2 роки тому

While held to today’s standards, you can say it was bad, but when designed, built and used, it was great. It was sewn into the city with roads and public transportation. Was a good stadium to watch games in. Grass surface. The upper deck seats were closer than the new baseball stadium. FedEx isn’t loved that much. RFK didn’t have the suites and all (what 60s stadium did?). But for the average fan, the suites just push the cheap seats further away from the field.

    • @TheJhtlag

One of my favorite concert memories was in the summer of 1995?-94? maybe.... [edit: ya, it was 1994] a friend and I hitched rides from MA to DC to see the Grateful Dead play. We got there just in time to hear them warm up and roll into their set on the last day they would be there. The crowd was huge. We took up every part of that first black and white overhead photo at the start of the video. Bob Dylan played with them for the encore. I was only fifteen years old at the time, and had never been to such a massive event. I think the biggest event prior, was perhaps close to thirty thousand, but this one dwarfed any of those. We sat and listened to the music under the shade of that tree in the foreground, against the stadium, in the last photo of the video. Great place. Fond memories!

Not surprised and not really torn up about it it's been a long time and things change but good memories. It's an interesting piece of property to be sure on a line with the Lincoln Memorial, the National Mall, the Capitol Building and I guess part of L'Enfants original plan of DC whatever gets put there would be an interesting bookend on that side of DC. think carefully folks. As someone who was never at the place, I always thought this was a pretty stadium. It is very unfairly
lumped in with and described as one of the "cookie cutter" stadiums. Those ( Riverfront, Three Rivers, Atlanta Fulton County, and actually even Shea Stadium) were truly ROUND
and had the Half moon shaped stands on the 1st and 3rd base sides which slid to a parallel position for the football gridiron. While D.C. Stadium also had the sliding seats, anyone can clearly see that when set up for baseball it had the (slightly modified) "V" shape of the surrounding seats that define a baseball park. The undulating roofline and the lights that followed it (a first for stadiums because of a D.C. sightline regulation) gave it a sleek and modern as well as a unique silhouette. Hardly cookie cutter. This stadium had the misfortune to exist while dealing with two very un-
fortunate circumstances. The baseball team that it was built to accommodate stunk for it's entire residency, so it was never able to create or be associated with any cherished memories and so was never able to acquire a fondness or "beloved" status. It was also owned and run by the District of Columbia. The Taj Mahal would be a dump if it was never maintained, and since the District is the epitome of "Government management and maintenance" it was allowed to fall into a state of seediness, disrepair and dirt. Had this stadium been taken care of like Dodger Stadium, Anaheim Stadium or Kaufman Stadium it would still be a nice place for a baseball game. Yes, it was designed before luxury boxes and many other amenities that the so-called "fans" of today need to take
their mind off the fact that they have gone to a sporting event, but those things could most likely be addressed even easier than they were at Fenway Park and Wrigley Field.
D.C. (Sorry,RFK.) Stadium will pass away shortly, but I will at least be one voice who will speak to the fact that it was a nice looking place in it's time...and could have remained so with a little bit
    of care.
