📱 In this video, Swami Mukundananda answers a question related to progress in Spiritual Path of a seeker when his or her Family is in disagreement with the Spiritual Path the person is undertaking. While our Family and Friends may or may not encourage us to progress in our Spiritual Journey, the way reacts to it is completely within our control. The goal is to continue progressing in our journey despite any obstacles in our life.
When our Family members express their disagreement on the Spiritual path we are undertaking, we should give them the benefit of the doubt. We should also be more intelligent in handling things with them, knowing what we can and cannot change within our Family with regards to Spirituality. Once we have this understanding, we should try to help them by giving them the knowledge of the Spiritual path and its importance, while moving on with the things that we cannot change. This way we will be undisturbed in our Spiritual Journey despite any disagreements. The Good news is one person progressing in Spiritual Path has the potential to transform the complete Family into getting into this path and attain the divine bliss of God. Watch the video to find out more.

Such a great answer to a very relevant question. Lead by example, never judge others, and impart knowledge compassionately, allowing others to accept whatever appeals to them, without expectations of adaptations to your own viewpoints or opinions.

Very nice explanation by Swami Mukundananda ji on how unholiness to think of others not practicing or following the spiritual path. We do not know anyone’s good deeds as they move ahead faster than us in the path later. I loved the examples by Swamiji where he mentioned if we can change positively, if others see the change of positive behavior in us, the other family members also changed and also followed the path.
Also it’s eye opening to know that everyone is not interested in spiritual path and it’s natural. But if anyone is interested that is by the grace of God.

Thank you for great speech...the most difficult thing is to manage relationships with diplomacy because most of us have the desire to control and be acknowledged and without realising that before we get acknowledged we must first acknowledge and put others first without being egotistical. ..but the world of technology is all about ME first ..

Its I think the problem faced by every devotee, one hardly gets support and consent from friends and family . But Swamiji' s advice is so helpful and motivating that now such reluctance from family will hardly stop us from our endeavour.
Thank you so much Swamiji for such a noble guidance.

We can change others by setting a good and positive example. Whatever you can strive to change we should do it whatever we cannot change we accept it. And know the difference what is changeable and what is not.

Very well answered by Swamiji. People’s view will not necessarily match with ours. But the important thing is that we should not get disturbed by other people’s view. If we are truely compassionate, we share the knowledge but let them accept what they feel is right. Judging is selfishness.
We cannot expect everyone to be devoted. Worth implementing
    Thank u Swamiji.

Swamiji beautifully says that expecting others to value spirituality like oneself is unrealistic because of individual differences. Making judgments about others can destroy relationships because such expectations are driven by self-serving needs. Wow, thank you, Swamiji for the words of wisdom!

Many conflicts of interest arises due to false expectations, be it material or spiritual. Especially when it comes to family, this truly matters and affects in many ways in day to day life. This is very enlightening to listen to Swami ji, what is changeable and what is not and how to behave in the world without disturbing the spiritual practice and inner peace is very helpful. So very true, our motives are selfish, even if spiritual. All the more - we have false notions about how to practice spirituality. There is so much to learn and implement - in terms of spiritual norms and traits - within ourselves; which we can and need to work upon no matter where we are on this earth - irrespective of people, place and things we are surrounded by. Swamiji has taught me well and I definitely stand corrected. So thankful to Swamiji! We can try our best and leave to God and Guru the rest.

Hare Rama. It's my own personal experience. My father totally support me on spirituality. My mother was against. I didn't respond. I continued my studies on spirituality. Because I don't know why. I some how felt. God is a good person. Maybe a friend. At my earlier days. I felt God is my friend and I should continue my spiritual growth. Later I found it is the most important thing in the world. Maybe for me at least. Later my mother very very slowly took interest in small copies of script's of different Saints. She stopped disturbing my spiritual progress. I feel I am a free Bird now.
Don't worry. Be happy. God exists. He or She (Saints). And guidance will help you.
Never give up your spiritual progress. Be calm and patience.
    All the best to everyone.
    Peace. Purity. Happiness.
    Om Pavitranand Sarasmati and Shanti.

I'm not asking or expecting anyone to change, their problems are NOT my problems, I have problems of my own. IF I judge them to be bad for my mental health then I will disassociate with them. I can't help them, I am trying to help myself by seeking the truth and IF they want to change then they can also do the same. IF they don't want to change then there's nothing I can do. For them to change or not to change is nothing to do with me.

It is a genuine issue. Families are concerned that the breadwinner might renounce everything and leave them in search of God! What are they to do then? Explain with love and understanding the support that God provides.

This is absolutely normal. For woman, family is all. This world is enough for them. They have no expectation for other world. They dont care. Whereas having got bored of this world, the men strives to explore unknown of higher dimension. But there is a cost which directly impact this world of lady of the house. She is happy to have you here with the family and discharging your family obligation. She has no interest in God at the cost of family. This is the reason that most of Saints either abandoned their families or remained unmarried . Even Buddha and Mahavira abandoned their families.

Religious practices are different from spiritual practices. Religious practices, as long as it does not interfere with others life, is not a problem. But such rituals do interfere with others ways of living and divorces are very common. This is due to adamant and near fanatic stand taken by ritualistic people. Spiritual practices certainly does not interfere with others.

I recommend, asat sangha tyaaga. Kusangha. From now on I will use whatever wisdom I have to judge everyone in my circle. IF they prove themselves to be based on tamas or rajo guna then I will limit my contact with them as much as possible. I want to mix with satvic personalities as much as possible. Two years ago a group of people in my community invited me to eat out with them at a restaurant run by tamas guna. I'm a vegetarian n teetotaller. Soon these tamas guna people started to ask me to eat their food stuffs and drink what resembled frothy yellow urine in a glass. My mistake , my fault entirely. From now on I eat at home. The group is no longer in my contact.

"...YOU must see how MUCH of what is SPOKEN is PRACTISED; those who give advice must follow it themselves. If YOU cannot avoid doing a thing, DO NOT ask others to avoid it...," Satya Sai Baba (pg. 97, Sandeha Nivarini)
"....Evolve yourself. Mind your own business. Reform yourself FIRST. How can you HELP others when YOU yourself GROPE in DARKNESS, when you ARE blind? Both will FALL in the deep abyss and break their legs," Swami Sivananda (pg. 227, Concentration & Meditation).
"Even innocent, well-meant words are quite often misunderstood and they produce discord. Never go to advise anyone in anything, unless you are asked to. Mind your own business." (pg. 15, Peace of Mind by Swami Sivananda)
Paramahansa Yogananda: "...remember, example speaks louder than words. If you want to change someone else, change yourself first." (pg. 144, Journey to Self-realisation)
Paramahansa Yogananda: "Let YOUR example be THE way to change others' lives. Reform YOURSELF and you WILL reform thousands." (Yoganandaji's address on 6.3.1952: Rajarsi Janankananda, pg. 153) [The same quote is found at pg. 41, Paramahansa Yogananda in Memoriam]

"Reform YOURSELF. The society will reform itself. If EVERY ONE of you who reads these lines makes up his mind to lead the divine life from TODAY, from THIS moment, what doubt is there that the entire society of which you are the units WILL BE REFORMED," (pg. 109-110, Sermonettes of Swami Sivananda)
Mata Amirtanandamayi: "Don't try to change the world or other people before YOU are able to change YOURSELF. If YOU try to change others without changing YOUR own ATTITUDES, it will not have any EFFECT." (pg. 28, Awaken Children Vol. 6)
Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa: "FIRST, YOU do PLENTY of Japa, Sadhana, Yoga, meditation. IF you HAVE got SOME TIME left over, AFTER all YOUR Sadhana, engage in charity, engage in helping others. BUT never think that the very purpose of life is to HELP OTHERS. Who are YOU to help others? Can God not help people who need help? Don't think that He cannot do it, (that) He is not capable of helping the sick and the poor, and (therefore) you should do something. This sort of too much preoccupation of helping OTHERS is also a sort of DELUSION, and egoistic DELUSION." (pgs. 200-201, Swami Sivananda: Saint, Sage and Godman by Swami Chidananda Maharaj [A Divine Life Society Publication]).
"There are some people who want to save the world without even knowing how to save THEMSELVES! Without solving your OWN problems you CANNOT solve those of the world. This is the trouble with most FANATICAL reformers: they do not really know anything of themselves and yet they want to reform OTHERS. Such is our perverse nature that we go not multiplying work until it absorbs all ot attention and energy." (pg. 437, Meditation and Spiritual Life by Swami Yatiswarananda)
"We try to gain something for OURSELVES and then try to share it with OTHERS....Let us FIRST strive to be divine OURSELVES, and THEN help OTHERS to be divine. But these two MUST go together. When one has promoted one's OWN spiritual progress to SOME extent, ONLY then can one work for OTHERS and that, in an EFFICIENT way... Unless you have something, what are you going to give?" (pg. 443, Meditation and Spiritual Life by Swami Yatiswarananda)
Swami Sivananda: "When people who are inharmonious within themselves begin to PREACH, they can ONLY spread disharmony, even though they might avowedly strive to spread peace. The rishies have called this 'the blind leading the blind.' " (Swamiji's speech on 3.10.1950: pg. 244, Sivananda's Lectures: All-India and Ceylon Tour).

Swamiji beautifully says that expecting others to value spirituality like oneself is unrealistic because of individual differences. Making judgments about others can destroy relationships because such expectations are driven by self-serving needs. Wow, thank you, Swamiji for the words of wisdom.
