Yeah that’s a great idea. I should include an auto comparison. I just love that on this cam you can shoot in D Log M, and get a less sharp/digital image.
@@jostalking I think the low light is generally noisy and still suffers from jitters too. I think some of the auto image skin tones need work as well. I know bumping up thr shutter speed helps w/ the jitters... BUT DJI should just already do that in the new Super Night mode. I've been testing the Action 5 Pro too. I'm actually looking forward to the Ace Pro 2. Probably will be better than Action 5 Pro.

Ali Clarkson did that, he compared it with Hero 13, in the woods very dark. He rode a moutnian bike int he dark no lights. The action 5 made it brighte, more detail, but it was brighter than it actually was according to him. @@KnutHelberg

Man thank you for this video, it looks incredible. As a complete hobbyist I want this camera as I go travelling/adventures as I'll be in the sea and also want something that has a bit of strength to it incase I drop it and stuff. I think I'll pick it up. I do want to give a cinematic/A24 aesthetic feel to my videos, not go super wide on the angle and try make it less action camera as possible but I guess it's good we can shoot in Log on the A5Pro.
@@DOHHHHHHHHHH Hey thanks buddy! I was pretty impressed. I’m torn between this and the pocket 3 as my two favorite cameras. They’re just so easy to use and with Log you can control the color. The battery life is what I love and the slow motion is great too. One thing I absolutely fumbled was that in the tracking mode it does shoot in 2.7 K, in the video I said 1080 P.

Thoughts on the power grip thing? Looks like it might be a great vlogging tool. Excellent review btw. My takeaways after shooting one vlog today so far on the 5 Pro... 1. The standard color mode is kinda crazy. No, it doesn't look good for filmmakers but the HDR look with the vibrant colors and dynamic range will be loved by the audience. I constantly have to remind myself that I'm not making a movie, I'm making a vlog...people LOVE bright and colorful. 2. The low light is a significant upgrade and the screen is amazing. 3. You have to be mindful of the stabilization in slowmo. 4. I really wish the DJI Mic 2 sounded better on the chest like it does handheld to the mouth. It really picks up the muffled bass on the chest. 5. I have a feeling I will be reaching for the 5 Pro more often than the Pocket 3 for daily vlogging.
Really great insights on this. The funny thing is I think I will probably be reaching for the DJI action 5 Pro more than the pocket three as well. I feel like there is less room for error when shooting. The Pocket 3 seems to have a mind of its own at times. The action five is just simple, point and shoot. I just realized that I didn’t answer your question about the power grip thing. I ordered it today. I’m going to Disneyland and they do not allow selfie sticks that extend honestly though, I think it is pointless to own the power grip thing and the extra batteries.
I saw comparison, Ali Clarkson did mountain bike riding comparison, he shot in almost pitch black, and Action 5 Pro made the trees and trails visible in the forest, but Hero 13 did not, it was very dark, but that's how it actually looked like he said. But his video had too much distortion on both. Not sure what he shot it on. Also saw a vid by Becca Farsace, the colours looked weird, so did the sky. But I think that's fixable with editing. But Hero 13 blew out the highlights, but I'm sure it can be tweaked too. I see some of the weirdness in some of your footage too at 3:34 looks like clarity was turned too high, too dark edges, tree was weird too, when you are further away, but you look more natural up close.But the rest of the footage looked superb.
man you have a great eye! I will check out those other videos as well. I mean there is no perfect camera, but I did check out your channel and I think you might benefit too from the stabilization. The question is do you really ride in super low light? The videos I saw were all during the day. Super entertaining by the way!
@@jostalking During the winter I do. The dark starts around 15.00. Not quite there yet, it starts at around 21 I think. The hero 7 doesn't do so well in the dark, even with super bight lights. But all of the newer action cams look better. And during the winter I will be riding in - 10c. But action 5 and hero 13 will handle that.
@@jostalking More are coming from this summer, got a back log. I suspect both will mich better than my hero 7 but action 5 clearly is the winner in the dark, more detail.

My shoot last week with the Action 4 4K30 M log 90,000kbps / Today same lighting on same set 50,000kbps. That said the picture looks better IMHO and camera overall is better but I am still looking forward to the update in increase the Bitrate. Overall the Action 5 is a great improvement over the 4 which is still a great camera

I use 24fps 4k rock steady, exposure auto is -0.3 EV 100-800. Color is dlog m. Image adjustment is texture -2, noise reduction -2. White Balance is Auto. Hope that helps!

The lowlight footage is very jittery when you move the camera around (For example at 7:38). It is due to setting too low of a minimum shutter speed for your frame rate. Contrary to the 180 shutter rule, I think for 4k30 you should be at least 1/100 minimum at night. It is so the camera has enough frames to switch together when stabilizing at night. This is not unique to Action 5, as the 4 has the same solution

All of the low light footage looked great. 5:23 This scene looked great. 5:32 The sign looked good in this footage. But I noticed weird pulsating and warping at 7:58. Is this a side effect of some stabilisation? Was the nes just dirty?
@7:58 - When I watch it in the TV I can see it but not so much on my phone. I only see it though around the lights, maybe there is a like a weird light conflict?
The beginning is 24fps dlog m with the DJI rec 709 Lut added. The black and white shots were all shot in 120fps slow motion and I took all the saturation out of the shots to make it black and white.

Love your videos as always Jo! This is the first time i would have to say our opinions on a piece of tech is different. I assume you shot most of the low light scenes in reg video mode with dlogm. I find the super night mode terribly disappointing. So bad, that it looks no different than a home security camera at night. I also do notice a difference during the day with the lower bitrate.
appreciate your honesty - I didnt use the super night mode at all, I used the regular mode. I actually didnt care for the super night mode, it felt super digital. I found that grading this footage vs the Action 4 footage was much cleaner and had more information but I could be in the honeymoon face with my new camera. I will make a low light test against the pocket 3 maybe? Someone else said that the low light footage was way too jittery.
I did not shoot with an ND filter. The Exposure was set to Auto with these parameters. -0.3EV, ISO 100-800, DLOG M, 24FPS, Rock Steady, 16x9 - I hope that helps
Hello again - just received my camera and have been testing it out. Came back to this video to watch again and also review your reply to question. One thing you didn’t mention in your response was the shutter speed in your auto exposure settings. Do you happen to know what it was?
This is actually the footage I’ve been looking for! I’m looking for a small action camera, not for action, but for mall walking tours, city walks and walks at night in the city lights. I was about to buy the ace pro but then this action 5 dropped. Do you think the action 5 is a good option for evening and night walking videos? And mall walking? And does the action 5 have jittery effect in low light with artificial lights? I’ve heard if you crank the shutter to 1/240 and crank ISO, it’s not jittery at all. The ace pro has no jitters straight out of box. But this can you gotta tweak the settings. Great tests.
The jitter in both Action4/5 are due to too low of a min shutter speed. I've shot at night w Action 4 at 4k30 and 1/100 shutter speed has no jitter. I would assume it is same for Action 5
Some people have complained about the jittery footage in low light, even here in my comments I am very curious to try cranking the shutter. I really do love the camera, and I think if you’re gonna go with an action camera, this is the one to get. I think your other option would be the DJI pocket three. But it is much more fragile. @keithc4252 - thanks for the setting. Can’t wait to try these. I had just gotten the camera so my settings were very primitive. I shot in 4K, 24 FPS with auto ISO. It looked good on the tiny screen so I went with it. Very curious to try your settings.

@@360phototaker I looked it up on the DJI website and people are claiming they tried it and only go the battery pack to charge it to 80%, and DJI claims that it is NOT compatible with the case - hope that helps
low light performance is better. but when walking, the quality will be drop.. but, its normal.. because it using EIS & not gimbal or mechanical stabilization.
If at all possible to be honest I prefer not to use the low light mode - but you're right the EIS doesnt like movement at all. Really appreciate you making a comment! Please stop by again
There's no doubt the Action 5 Pro is better than the GoPro Hero 13, but the Action 5 Pro has issues that weren't covered here. Like how the colors of the sky looks overly processed and fake during the day or how terrible Super Night Mode is in comparison to non-super night mode. DJI shouldn't have called this a Pro until it came with a 1" sensor. DJI will have to have a major firmware update for this camera before I consider buying one. Until then, I'll save for whichever action camera comes out with a 1" sensor and Pocket 3 like image quality.
That is a fair statement, but for my purposes I was very happy with the results. At the end of the day it's still an action camera. You are right about super night mode though, I didn't bother with it because I felt it looked very sharp and digital. You bring up a good point in that I didn't talk about what I didn't like. I was rushing to get this video out. I think I might go more in depth in some more videos and take more time. Really appreciate your comment and your honesty. Next time I'll try to have a more fully formed opinion. Do you have an action cam, and if so which one?

@@jostalking I'm not against fish eye lenses or distortion, but for my use case I have to have none or little. I do mountain bike POV, so so I need to show how it actually is, not make the trail look flat, and then it bending when I ride over something This is the main thing holding me back buying a new action cam. If it's not possible, is it possible to install aftermarket lens? My current camera is a Hero 7 with aftermarket lens, so but as it can't record in sub zero temps, and I want better video quality, I'm considering new action cams.
@@mtbboy1993 I shot all of this in the DeWarp setting, but you bring up a good point. I can see that there is still a tiny bit of warping, but I wonder if that is just the nature of these ultra wide lenses that are in all action cameras? I tried to google it for you and found that some people will Dewarp footage using a go pro plug in, but I know that is a pain in the ass, sorry I don't have an answer. The Mic 2 is awesome, with the 32 bit float you never have to worry about the gain - so to be honest I didnt even check it. Now at the end of the video I was using the DJI Mic 1 and I was popping and overmodulating all over the place. I am definitely going to make the full investment into th DJI Mic 2 full kit.

You can record in public. He wasn't hiding the camera and if you're in a public park or mall area you should expect to be captured on multiple cameras.

Just don't take it into the woods. A lot of detail will get muddy because of the low bitrate

But I noticed weird pulsating and warping at 7:58.
Is this a side effect of some stabilisation? Was the nes just dirty?
@7:58 - When I watch it in the TV I can see it but not so much on my phone. I only see it though around the lights, maybe there is a like a weird light conflict?
Could you please tell me what settings were used at the start of the video?
The beginning is 24fps dlog m with the DJI rec 709 Lut added. The black and white shots were all shot in 120fps slow motion and I took all the saturation out of the shots to make it black and white.

Love your videos as always Jo! This is the first time i would have to say our opinions on a piece of tech is different. I assume you shot most of the low light scenes in reg video mode with dlogm. I find the super night mode terribly disappointing. So bad, that it looks no different than a home security camera at night. I also do notice a difference during the day with the lower bitrate.
appreciate your honesty - I didnt use the super night mode at all, I used the regular mode. I actually didnt care for the super night mode, it felt super digital. I found that grading this footage vs the Action 4 footage was much cleaner and had more information but I could be in the honeymoon face with my new camera. I will make a low light test against the pocket 3 maybe? Someone else said that the low light footage was way too jittery.

Did you have a nd filter on during the daytime videos? You said you shot in 24 fps - wondering what you r shutter speed was?
I did not shoot with an ND filter. The Exposure was set to Auto with these parameters. -0.3EV, ISO 100-800, DLOG M, 24FPS, Rock Steady, 16x9 - I hope that helps

Hello again - just received my camera and have been testing it out. Came back to this video to watch again and also review your reply to question. One thing you didn’t mention in your response was the shutter speed in your auto exposure settings. Do you happen to know what it was?
So I shoot in Auto with ranges. I believe in auto the shutter speed default is 1/24-8000? I cannot remember, but it’s whatever the first option is.

I’m looking for a small action camera, not for action, but for mall walking tours, city walks and walks at night in the city lights. I was about to buy the ace pro but then this action 5 dropped. Do you think the action 5 is a good option for evening and night walking videos? And mall walking?
And does the action 5 have jittery effect in low light with artificial lights?
I’ve heard if you crank the shutter to 1/240 and crank ISO, it’s not jittery at all. The ace pro has no jitters straight out of box. But this can you gotta tweak the settings. Great tests.
The jitter in both Action4/5 are due to too low of a min shutter speed. I've shot at night w Action 4 at 4k30 and 1/100 shutter speed has no jitter. I would assume it is same for Action 5
Some people have complained about the jittery footage in low light, even here in my comments I am very curious to try cranking the shutter. I really do love the camera, and I think if you’re gonna go with an action camera, this is the one to get. I think your other option would be the DJI pocket three. But it is much more fragile. @@babyboy1971 Action 4: Rocksteady 4k30 16:9, 1/100 - 1/8000 SS (The most important setting), 100~1600 ISO, +0.0EV, Standard Dewarp, Auto Whitebalance (AWB), Sharpness -1, Noise Reduction 0 (Good balance of noise reduction and smeary image).
@keithc4252 - thanks for the setting. Can’t wait to try these. I had just gotten the camera so my settings were very primitive. I shot in 4K, 24 FPS with auto ISO. It looked good on the tiny screen so I went with it. Very curious to try your settings.
Will action 5 pro battery fit in the action 4 battery pack and will it charge?

Will the DJI action 5 battery charge in the battery pack that you get with the Dji action 4 adventure pack.
@@360phototaker I looked it up on the DJI website and people are claiming they tried it and only go the battery pack to charge it to 80%, and DJI claims that it is NOT compatible with the case - hope that helps
low light performance is better. but when walking, the quality will be drop.. but, its normal.. because it using EIS & not gimbal or mechanical stabilization.
If at all possible to be honest I prefer not to use the low light mode - but you're right the EIS doesnt like movement at all. Really appreciate you making a comment! Please stop by again

There's no doubt the Action 5 Pro is better than the GoPro Hero 13, but the Action 5 Pro has issues that weren't covered here. Like how the colors of the sky looks overly processed and fake during the day or how terrible Super Night Mode is in comparison to non-super night mode. DJI shouldn't have called this a Pro until it came with a 1" sensor. DJI will have to have a major firmware update for this camera before I consider buying one. Until then, I'll save for whichever action camera comes out with a 1" sensor and Pocket 3 like image quality.
That is a fair statement, but for my purposes I was very happy with the results. At the end of the day it's still an action camera. You are right about super night mode though, I didn't bother with it because I felt it looked very sharp and digital. You bring up a good point in that I didn't talk about what I didn't like. I was rushing to get this video out. I think I might go more in depth in some more videos and take more time. Really appreciate your comment and your honesty. Next time I'll try to have a more fully formed opinion. Do you have an action cam, and if so which one?

@@jostalking I'm not against fish eye lenses or distortion, but for my use case I have to have none or little.
I do mountain bike POV, so so I need to show how it actually is, not make the trail look flat, and then it bending when I ride over something
This is the main thing holding me back buying a new action cam. If it's not possible, is it possible to install aftermarket lens?
My current camera is a Hero 7 with aftermarket lens, so but as it can't record in sub zero temps, and I want better video quality, I'm considering new action cams.
@@mtbboy1993 I shot all of this in the DeWarp setting, but you bring up a good point. I can see that there is still a tiny bit of warping, but I wonder if that is just the nature of these ultra wide lenses that are in all action cameras? I tried to google it for you and found that some people will Dewarp footage using a go pro plug in, but I know that is a pain in the ass, sorry I don't have an answer. The Mic 2 is awesome, with the 32 bit float you never have to worry about the gain - so to be honest I didnt even check it. Now at the end of the video I was using the DJI Mic 1 and I was popping and overmodulating all over the place. I am definitely going to make the full investment into th DJI Mic 2 full kit.

Recording something in plain view, in a public space like a street or public park, is generally allowed.
You can record in public. He wasn't hiding the camera and if you're in a public park or mall area you should expect to be captured on multiple cameras.
WARNING. The action 5 pro low light footage sucks and it has other issues. Get the action 4...I returned my action 5 pro the day I got it.....

Someone else commented, we are making Vlogs, not movies. I’m currently working on an action realtiy TV series for NBC, and you be surprised what is passable nowadays
