Fiat for the win! Fiats make the best little cars ever! I drove a yellow Cinq sporting my brother had as a courtesy car, the first fwd car I had ever enjoyed driving (in fact i ended up buying a Punto afterwards (55hp sx no one ever told it how slow it was) Also had a yellow 1.9 jtd Stilo in yellow-best car i ever owned (not my favourite mind, but the best by miles)
Finally a Fiat! I loved it! Such a shame we haven't had those small things here in Brazil. Ok. Seicento isn't the best regarding Fiat design, but it's nice. The Cinquecento indeed had a lot more personality (whether we can say that about a car, but anyway)! Lovely to see how such a small and weird little thing brought smiles to you. I think that's what cars were supposed to be. Now we face this disease called SUVs, cars are getting boring and boring. I guess I'll keep my 500 and my Punto Cabrio for a long time! From a Fiat enthusiast, thank you so much Ian! I think it's time for you to consider a Fiat for the fleet. Cheers!
Interesting comparison and thanks for introducing Miller Corner. The steering wheel in the Fiat makes me think of my Logitech G28 gaming wheel. Which probably isn't much smaller than that in my Mega Multitruck. :-)
Having subbed to Joe (after this vid) and exhausted his whole back catalogue I can declare I love Sciecento's. New shell has a Brummie plate. I love is passio and all the mods he did. And to be fair he loved Myrtle as much too.. Many smile were had in this escapade! ;) Now I want a Matiz and a yellow Fiat thing with a name google can't compute. Nice one Ian..
Absolutely mirror your thoughts on the Cinquecento vs Seicento styling. Never liked the Seicento and still don’t, the beautifully simplistic design of the Cinquecento was far easier on the eye and the Sporting version especially looked rather good.
Reminds me of my old Toyota Yaris (2000) 1.3 Vvti, that was an absolute blast to drive, no real grunt but on twisty roads it was guaranteed to put a smile on my face.
Yep I preferred the cinquecento too. I had an uno with a fire engine, still one of my favourite ever cars, great fun to drive, I neglected it terribly and it just kept on going!

I own mk1 Punto 75 and the only thing I dont like much are the side mirrors. Had a Uno 45s mk1 and it was the same thing. You can see all your stuff but you should always be carefull and sometimes visibility can be low.
I used to have a Cinquecento Sporting. It was red but faded to pink! Despite frequent breakdowns it was one of the most fun cars I've driven. Watching this video makes me want to find another!
I love tha yaris, I had the sr model on an xreg plate. That thing never broke down and had 154k on clock, unfortunately everything just worn around it, and I ended up bottoming it out, causing hundred of pounds of damage to the cat and exhaust system in other areas. The yaris 1.3 is pretty fast

In 1997 I had a Cinquecento Sporting on a cheap contract hire. It was the most fun I've had driving a car. Revvy engine and it felt like I was always travelling far faster than I actually was. They weren't built to last though. After 1 year and 24k miles hooning around south London it was knackered.
I had a Scicento a couple of year ago.To be fair it wasnt a bad little car.I didnt think there was not much room for shopping ! When i drove it, i always had to wear lite shoes.....Bloody imposible to drive with a dirty great pair of boots on :) But on the whole not a bad little motor. !
Lol i had a 899cc seicento back in the day. Was so much fun to sling around corners & she even ate a renault 5 turbo for breakfast 🤣🤣 i still prefer my Slow Poke Matiz. More character & just rediculous. Wish us luck, monday is MOT day 😬😬😬
A 94 suzuki gti is in a different league performance wise. Seicento being 1.2 swapped and all. If you want to drive something nuts, try a 2008ish panda 1.4 16v on a wet road.
3:06. I can see a Polish sticker on the window. Actually, in mid to late 1990s our roads were full of Cinquecentos, Seicentos and Matizes. Nobody would have thought then such cars could make a come back 20 years later as something desirable. Their only appeal then was that they were relatively cheap.
I had a 2002 Fiat Seicento SX and a major problem with them is the cable operated clutch. These are prone to regularly snapping where they connect to a cam near the bulkhead via a set of rods on the right hand drive models.
I used to own a Cinquecento sporting in black with red trim. I brought it brand new in 1996 & I loved it. I remember Jeremy Clarkson did a test drive of it & he liked it so 👍. I wish I still had it because it was so much fun to drive.
I've always quite liked the looks of those, nearly had one for my first car. That makes quite a nice noise... modify the City Rover! I'm sure that would be a first and I would love to see it :D

That's not a car, that's basically a go-kart with a roof! If you struggle with fitting into the cramped driving position, I think I'd need to see a chiropractor afterwards. Modified cars are good fun for a while (my first car was a rusty B-reg Nova SR lookalike with a cherry bomb and three-spokes!) but the novelty of the harsh ride and exhaust drone very quickly gets old if you have to drive one full-time. I am with you on the styling - I much preferred the angular Cinquecento than this ill-advised update to a 'bubble' style that was already beginning to date when it was introduced. Looking forward to the 'Scort. I've nothing against old Fords, apart from the scene tax that's now put them beyond the reach of us 'bangernomics' types, but I guess that's because everyone had them when they were kids and there's a nostalgia factor, plus the whole tuning and modding scene. That one looks very clean (not rotten like most of the ones I remember!) and unmolested, and a nice period colour too.
I had a 94 M reg base spec Fiat Cinquecento with the 899cc engine as my first car and it was great fun to drive. I traded it in for a brand new Seicento 1.1 in base spec and it was no fun at all to drive. It was soon traded in for a Punto 1.2 Active Sport.
I always thought these little Fiats looked good, even Michael Schumacher put his name on one. Although in a safety situation I think Myrtle would win as if I can remember the Fiat only got a 2 star Euro NCAP crash test score whereas the Daewoo I think got three due to the dual airbags.
The original Cinquecento was purer and better looking but the Seicento was much better crash-wise, so a valid redesign overall..... Change the seats and steering wheel to proper Fiat items Joe !
Great video Ian! Was very excited to see my two favorite channels doing a collab! Personally I think I'd take the Super Seicento (as Joe has named it) over Myrtle, but that's because I've always been a FIAT fan...not to say I don't like the Matiz! :) Daewoo is long gone here in North America...as in there are NONE left on the roads. We never had many of their cars here....the Nubira, the Lanos, the Leganza....we never got the Matiz though! LOVE both videos though, kudos and great work to the two of you. Glad to see you both enjoyed each others little rides...your smiles are infectious! :D
I think you need to be broke and have an old city car for proper fun. In a Ferrari Aventador or a Lamborghini 458, you couldn't use all the power, you'd probably kill yourself in it, and you'd be stressing about other people damaging it all the time. With a Matiz, you've got that wonderful soundtrack and you can hoon around in it without worrying about speed cameras. Plus nobody will pour paint stripper on it. Or tap you up for a loan.
Ian grips an agreeable knob and I miss an firm and bouncy ride in a car now you come to mention it... as long as we are stationary at the time! Memories. Really enjoyed this edition! Good fun!

One knows one's become an anorak of the rare but unexceptional when one looks forward to a video of an early unmodified mk3 Ford Escort in burnt orange, and actually wouldn't mind one.
I was thinking that too. I always liked the mk3 Escorts the best. Never owned one, but I did drive one for a few days back in the day. Came in as a part ex, and I used it to go home in purely because it had half a tank of fuel. I discovered that I really liked it and very nearly bought it, but someone beat me to it, only to give it to his son who promptly turned it over showing off to his mates. Shameful waste of a good car. Pity you can't buy them for £300 anymore, which is what that one cost in the early 2000s.
Hmmm while they looked the part back in the day and the Sundym[?] glass in my Ghia was very nice; what was wrong with them? Well loads [I owned two, a 1.3L + 1.6 Ghia] the battery tray rot's out likely to drop onto front passengers feet; horrible carb, rough torqueless engine miss matched to the gearbox. Worst of all for a Ford they don't handle! Not nice to drive in a motorway traffic jam. They rust.
Hugely enjoyable! My takeaway from this is that mods can't turn a car into something it isn't, but they could turn it into the car it could be e.g. better sounding, sharper handling, rectifying cost-cutting when manufactured.
Never driven a Fiat Seicento. However, this one looks like great fun. I have driven a Matiz, and I;m sorry but I hated it. Handling was bloody awful. Fiat wins easily in my opinion; Fiat are good at making small cars
Fiat pinto 1.2 in the sporting was 75bhp if I remember correctly but In a small well handling light car, it could be fun and economical. Its a bangernomics sports car!
The old boxy Cinquecento Sporting (in yellow of course) was also one of my attainable dream cars back in the early 90s. From what I heard since then about their reliability, I'm not so sure any more, but I still like their looks. The Seicento was a step back design-wise IMO.
Another great road test! Looks like the Seicento (w/ those mods) would be great fun on an old-fashioned timed road rallye! Rear end styling slightly reminiscent of a 1990 Daihatsu Charade...
love the video, totally agree the cinquecento was so much better looking than the Seicento but as the years go by you look back and realise they are both nice looking cars.
It's good you're working with other people now and then. Joe obviously loves his car, but perhaps they're not everyone's cup of tea (especially with that catastrophic triangle of doom!) But there you go, it's fun (except when you have to wash/wipe the windscreen!) 👍🏻
I would like to try one with the 1.4 litre 16v version of that FIRE engine that was in the Panda 100 it was in the Panda a hoot, chasing Porsche boxsters on country roads and pushing 3 Series out the fast lane.
Great fun! But we have to agree with your preference. We drive the 4-cylinder Matiz, with the Chevy badge on it, and it's a superb little runabout. Midlands to Scotland or Wales is a decent experience, too. The extra cylinder gives it the necessary oomph on steeper hills, and we still better 60 mpg on runs, without really trying, unless you give it full beans. It drives rather like a 998cc Mini (the real one, not the fakes which we see today), but with much less engine noise. The downside is that the 750 had £30 annual Road Tax, but the 1000 cost £145+ at the time of purchase. Very unfair, for the sake of only 16 more horses under the bonnet.
I have never driven a Seicento but when I went to europe I drove a chevy spark which is a series 2 matiz essentially and it was horrible in every way imaginable, so i say Seicento.
@@HubNut eh, why not. Get some cheapo coilovers off ebay ( it weighs nothing so you don't need high end gear), some wider wheels, maybe some cheap factory steelies off a different car that still fit the factory hubbies, width and offset over diameter, of coarse some sway bars especially the rear off a different larger car, and lastly a cheapy small steering wheel. I think with just that it will still be a Matiz, but, a complete gokart in corners.
@@HubNut To be honest, modifying the crappiest of cars is usually the most satisfying, as they are the ones that have the most astounding results in feel, handling, and overall enjoyment.

Also, If the Matiz design was used by Fiat, and there was a sporting, I am 100% convinced it would look something like this.
I had a yellow Seicento Sporting for several years. Surprisingly nippy, and I can't imagine why anyone would want to change the seats. They were excellent for a little shopping car, and they slid forward to aid getting out of the back. I'm sure you would have been more comfortable with the originals. Also, there should be a detachable blind on the sunroof. It was very useful and looked nice, as it was made out the same material as the headlining. Mine had the standard 1108cc engine and was very nippy. Another modification that seems a little pointless.
The Fiat sounds fantastic. Have you tried a Mk 1 Yaris 1.3, they are really nippy, I have a 2001 Yaris 1.3 SR with all the extras, I believe the Yaris T sport Mk 1 is a really fast car, has a 1.5 engine.
I've never ever liked mods either, but this does look like a lot of fun. I will always be a purist, though. Despite the limitations. The MKIII melted my heart a little bit. Looking forward to that review.
I got a lift to and from work in a Seicento, surpised me too, I went from a pre-conceived notion of they're crap to I was wrong this is gutless car fun. Its great fun thrashing something with no power.
I thought the 600 was going to be the winner here as it looked fun but then I heard the 3 cylinder roar of the Matiz. It's glorious for what essentially was a cheap mini for mom and the kids. Sad that it is so easily dismissed. If only we could swap that 3 cylinder in the 600!
My first car was a seicento the one redeeming factor loads of fun under the speed limit dont get me wrong I love properly fast cars but being able to hoon whilst still keeping my licence is more fun

I own a 1998 Seicento, just did a 8700 km road trip to Gibraltar and back this summer. 100% reliable car and extremely fuel efficient.

Loved that little Fiat - OK I love my Moggy Minor but my other car is a very early modded feisty looking Yaris. In my 70's, but love 'pocket rockets'.

Novitec used to have a turbo kit for the Fiat's 1.1 engine so it got around 100 hp to play with
Surprised he didn't put Fiat's own two-pot turbo in there.

That Fiat reminds me of my 1994 Suzuki Swift GTi that I modified. Unfortunately it met it's demise early this year. Good times indeed.

Fiat is better, driven both and yup much preferred the Fiat. Thought the matiz was disappointing

I always thought these little Fiats looked good, even Michael Schumacher put his name on one. Although in a safety situation I think Myrtle would win as if I can remember the Fiat only got a 2 star Euro NCAP crash test score whereas the Daewoo I think got three due to the dual airbags.
The original Cinquecento was purer and better looking but the Seicento was much better crash-wise, so a valid redesign overall.....
Change the seats and steering wheel to proper Fiat items Joe !

Great video Ian! Was very excited to see my two favorite channels doing a collab! Personally I think I'd take the Super Seicento (as Joe has named it) over Myrtle, but that's because I've always been a FIAT fan...not to say I don't like the Matiz! :) Daewoo is long gone here in North America...as in there are NONE left on the roads. We never had many of their cars here....the Nubira, the Lanos, the Leganza....we never got the Matiz though!

Great review. It just shows you don't need a super car and massive amounts of money to have fun.
I think you need to be broke and have an old city car for proper fun. In a Ferrari Aventador or a Lamborghini 458, you couldn't use all the power, you'd probably kill yourself in it, and you'd be stressing about other people damaging it all the time. With a Matiz, you've got that wonderful soundtrack and you can hoon around in it without worrying about speed cameras. Plus nobody will pour paint stripper on it. Or tap you up for a loan.

My mom drove a 128 Special in 1978 and with 55hp from 1115cc we chased the VW Polos even the early MkII GTs with 60 hp in our home area around Wolfsburg :)

I was thinking that too. I always liked the mk3 Escorts the best. Never owned one, but I did drive one for a few days back in the day. Came in as a part ex, and I used it to go home in purely because it had half a tank of fuel. I discovered that I really liked it and very nearly bought it, but someone beat me to it, only to give it to his son who promptly turned it over showing off to his mates. Shameful waste of a good car. Pity you can't buy them for £300 anymore, which is what that one cost in the early 2000s.
Hmmm while they looked the part back in the day and the Sundym[?] glass in my Ghia was very nice; what was wrong with them? Well loads [I owned two, a 1.3L + 1.6 Ghia] the battery tray rot's out likely to drop onto front passengers feet; horrible carb, rough torqueless engine miss matched to the gearbox. Worst of all for a Ford they don't handle! Not nice to drive in a motorway traffic jam. They rust.

Hugely enjoyable! My takeaway from this is that mods can't turn a car into something it isn't, but they could turn it into the car it could be e.g. better sounding, sharper handling, rectifying cost-cutting when manufactured.

Never driven a Fiat Seicento. However, this one looks like great fun. I have driven a Matiz, and I;m sorry but I hated it. Handling was bloody awful. Fiat wins easily in my opinion; Fiat are good at making small cars
Fiat pinto 1.2 in the sporting was 75bhp if I remember correctly but In a small well handling light car, it could be fun and economical.

The old boxy Cinquecento Sporting (in yellow of course) was also one of my attainable dream cars back in the early 90s. From what I heard since then about their reliability, I'm not so sure any more, but I still like their looks. The Seicento was a step back design-wise IMO.

I would like to try one with the 1.4 litre 16v version of that FIRE engine that was in the Panda 100 it was in the Panda a hoot, chasing Porsche boxsters on country roads and pushing 3 Series out the fast lane.
Great fun! But we have to agree with your preference. We drive the 4-cylinder Matiz, with the Chevy badge on it, and it's a superb little runabout. Midlands to Scotland or Wales is a decent experience, too. The extra cylinder gives it the necessary oomph on steeper hills, and we still better 60 mpg on runs, without really trying, unless you give it full beans. It drives rather like a 998cc Mini (the real one, not the fakes which we see today), but with much less engine noise. The downside is that the 750 had £30 annual Road Tax, but the 1000 cost £145+ at the time of purchase. Very unfair, for the sake of only 16 more horses under the bonnet.

I have never driven a Seicento but when I went to europe I drove a chevy spark which is a series 2 matiz essentially and it was horrible in every way imaginable, so i say Seicento.
Ian needs a Supercharged and modded Seicento. You can see the smile on his face. OR...or or or.... Coilovers on the Matiz, and a super charger.
I think a modded Matiz would be a serious giggle...

Get some cheapo coilovers off ebay ( it weighs nothing so you don't need high end gear), some wider wheels, maybe some cheap factory steelies off a different car that still fit the factory hubbies, width and offset over diameter, of coarse some sway bars especially the rear off a different larger car, and lastly a cheapy small steering wheel. I think with just that it will still be a Matiz, but, a complete gokart in corners.

I had a yellow Seicento Sporting for several years. Surprisingly nippy, and I can't imagine why anyone would want to change the seats. They were excellent for a little shopping car, and they slid forward to aid getting out of the back. I'm sure you would have been more comfortable with the originals. Also, there should be a detachable blind on the sunroof. It was very useful and looked nice, as it was made out the same material as the headlining. Mine had the standard 1108cc engine and was very nippy. Another modification that seems a little pointless.

The Fiat sounds fantastic. Have you tried a Mk 1 Yaris 1.3, they are really nippy, I have a 2001 Yaris 1.3 SR with all the extras, I believe the Yaris T sport Mk 1 is a really fast car, has a 1.5 engine.

I've never ever liked mods either, but this does look like a lot of fun. I will always be a purist, though. Despite the limitations. The MKIII melted my heart a little bit. Looking forward to that review.
I got a lift to and from work in a Seicento, surpised me too, I went from a pre-conceived notion of they're crap to I was wrong this is gutless car fun. Its great fun thrashing something with no power.
The 600 is lower and uses the 1108 Fire engine, that also has no interference valves. Its a pretty decent car.
I thought the 600 was going to be the winner here as it looked fun but then I heard the 3 cylinder roar of the Matiz. It's glorious for what essentially was a cheap mini for mom and the kids. Sad that it is so easily dismissed. If only we could swap that 3 cylinder in the 600!
My first car was a seicento the one redeeming factor loads of fun under the speed limit dont get me wrong I love properly fast cars but being able to hoon whilst still keeping my licence is more fun

A nice friendly battle. Cinquecento/Seicento Sportings are becoming quite popular on the hillclimb scene as they are light and nimble.
