I saw this video on my recommended and had no clue who the dude was in the name, but then I look at the picture and it’s Joseph Quinn, (I recognize him from Eddie) and thought I had to watch this lmao ♥️
Listen i'm hyperfixating so hard on joseph quinn and dickensian and need to info dump so i will tell y'all my understand of the plot, if you're curious and want to watch but want to know if its worth it first ect. But also if you want to go in blind then go watch and don't be spoiled by me lol So essentially, dickensian is a show which takes a lot of classic characters from some of Dickens's works and puts them in the same area within london, and it sort of tells a prequel story to a lot of the original stories. Joseph plays Arthur Havisham, brother to Amelia Havisham from Great Expectations. In the beginning of the show we see Arthur and his sister as their lawyer reads out the terms of their late father's will. When Arthur finds out that Amelia has been given the majority of shares to his brewery and ownership of the house, he is angry about this, with the classic 1800s misogynistic belief that as the man, he deserves the majority. So he conjures up a plan, and uses his friend Merriwether Compeyson to help him carry out this plan. This plan being, that Compeyson will court Amelia, make her fall in love with him, and then convince her to overwrite the terms of her fathers will to give Arthur more shares and stuff. This plan soon turns south when Compeyson, being a right asshole, takes it too far, and starts bossing Arthur around, rather than the other way round, how it should be. This is where to stop reading if you wish to watch, i will get more detailed from here. There is one moment where Compeyson is an ass and starts provoking Arthur basically. Arthur is already a pretty depressed and grumpy guy, but Compeyson starts to provoke him, asking him if he knows why his father left the Majority to Amelia and not him, the man of the family. Here it is quite heavily implied it is because Arthur is gay and his father knew this, however this is never confirmed. It could also be that he was the son of a cook from his fathers second marriage. Either way, Compeyson then uses this "secret" against him basically as blackmail, a threat that if Arthur "ruins" their plans or exposes Compeyson as an asshole that he can blackmail him with this information and ruin his life and reputation as a Havisham. There is also a scene, of which you see the aftermath of at 0:33, where Compeyson whips Arthur. Ngl when i saw it i was sat there stunned because the surrounding scenes seem pretty lighthearted in comparison, Nancy singing at the Inn, and then it cuts to Compeyson fully whipping Arthur with a belt. Shocking, but also thats the exact type of thing i like to see within film and TV, two very contrasting moods cut together. Anyway, the reason behind this whipping, is that Arthur got very drunk, as he often does throughout this show (again, he's a pretty depressed character lol), and ends up going back to Satis House (the house his sister now owns, basically the Havisham house) in a drunken rage, and starts insulting his sister and lowkey exposing his plans with Compeyson. Luckily for them, Amelia just kinda thinks he's spewing drunken nonsense, but of course Compeyson does not take well to this, throwing Arthur out of the house, and later finding him at his residence and uh, yeah. Whips him. With a belt. Compeyson is a dick. There is another instance where it seems Arthur was beat up by Compeyson, but that was not shown. (the scene we see at 0:44) In the end, Arthur finally decides to get off his ass and try and sort this out, after Compeyson has taken the deal way too far, now having proposed to Amelia (despite being already married...). He basically starts trying to convince compeyson that he's "back to his old self", which he kind of is now he has a plan to get back at Compeyson. He basically hires a hitman of sorts, forces compeyson to agree to tell Amelia about the plan and call off the wedding, which he does essentially under duress. Arthur takes him to Amelia, forces him to give her the note he wrote about the whole plan, at which point she essentially breaks down, screaming at everyone to get out, and goes mad. She keeps her wedding dress on, and orders her servants to keep the dinner table exactly as it is, which links on to Great Expectations. Arthur, after essentially seeing his sister go mad, becomes plagued by visions of her screaming, and the last shot we see of him is him stood on a roof. I'm sure you can understand what that implies. yeah its pretty dark and depressing lol. Joseph does an amazing job with it though. I do recommend watching if you can handle such dark themes (and if you can get through the 10000 other storylines you have to sit through)

Anyway, he goes in there a raging drunk and says some stuff against his sister and also kinda exposing Compeyson as a dickhead, so Compeyson kicks him out, and later goes to Arthurs house and uh,, whips him. Yeah. Its quite intense. I only just finished that part, but i recommend the show so far, its pretty good.
