    Good video. Just three notes:
    1. Those are not woodwind runs, those are woodwind arpeggios
    2. That harp arpeggio would be impossible to play live
    3. Runs are when the instrument plays a scale. If you are playing chords its arpeggios.

      @@Lasmelan Well. First off, its your music so you can do whatever you want :D. Second, when I write for orchestral instruments I always write what is playable, since that way you get a realistic sounding performance. For these super fast harp arpeggios that Alex wrote, I have a slight problem with, since they sound fake to me, since no harpist would be able to play them. You would never hear something like that in a live orchestral recording. So in the end, it just depends what you want to achieve. If you want to achieve a live sounding mockup, then your best bet is to write lines that are playable :)
      With all that said, I still think Alex did a great job. I just wanted to put in my 2 cents.

      @@AnzeRozmanArchestralMusic I would add that probably in a real orchestra, one wouldn't even hear the harp doing that, because it would get covered by the huge amount of violins/brass/woodwinds. That been said, it sounds pretty dope the way Alex used it :P

    • @AnzeRozmanArchestralMusic
      @AnzeRozmanArchestralMusic 5 років тому +13

      That is very wrong. The harp can be heard even over fortissimo brass since it has such a specific timbre and overtone series.

      @@AnzeRozmanArchestralMusic ehm, no... I read/hear every time about harpists complains about having to play over difficult parts that aren't even going to be heard by the pubblic (I don't think they make it up). Harps are about adding that magical layer to a composition, fortissimos aren't their target, you can barely hear them in records, while in this video the sound of the harp seems over amplified. 0:15

      That's my problem with almost all of the Alex's videos. Good producing is one thing, but I just can't get over that shitty fake music and boring simplistic progressions and melodies. That's not the music!

      I checked out your channel, is that you playing the guitar on your videos. It's hauntingly beautiful, gave me nostalgia from all my teen years spent playing Halo, where a slow backing of rock band or orchestra would give way to a lead guitar that sounded like it was crying, mourning, whimpering in the distance.
      Also you said you're getting into this genre. If, by that you mean orchestral composition, I am also getting into this genre. If you're interested, I would be more than willing to offer to collaborate with other musicians / enthusiasts on meaningful projects.
      Perhaps we could write orchestral music for other UA-camrs?
      Just an offer. All the best with what you do Cole.

      I listened to "Old Town Road" remix on your channel. And have come back here to say I disagree on your name. I offer to trade names with you because I think that name belongs to me.
      May I please ask, for what do you compose? I'd love to work on a project together! I'm making soundtracks for UA-camrs as a way to get experience composing / producing and working together with others in a semi-professional setting. It's also a really great way to support other like-minded people / creators by helping enhance their content with something personally made, like giving them presents on Christmas. I'd be thrilled to share in the experience, and would be amiss not to offer to work with you also. So if this interests you or you have a counter idea, please be so kind as to let me know. But feel free to decline / refuse, I understand!
      All the best Musician!

      As I've been told I also misspelled the term in this video.
      Cool trivia about that Final Fantasy theme is that it was written in five minutes. Literally.
      Legend has it they realized, minutes before the game was due, that they forgot to write a main title screen theme.
      Uematsu did the first thing on top of his head, and thus, the Final Fantasy prelude was born.

      Hey friend!
      I checked out your channel only to realize that game plays aren't my thing, but then I saw the little button for your Soundcloud. Thank goodness for that.
      I really like the track "Longing in Iron Fillings". I'm listening to it now! I also listened to "Through Thick & Thin" and was blown away by the texture of it as well as the panning. The gong opening with that ambient wind sort of noise is haunting and I giggled because it reminds me of Halo's music. "One Angry Clarinet & 8 Ded Cores" has such incredible percussion I'm jealous. So I just want you to know that I really like your composing and want to ask what you compose for? Do you do it just for fun, for projects or work? Because it's beautiful and I'd hate to see it go unused.
      If you do it just for fun, I'd love to offer to work together on a project! I'm making soundtracks for UA-camrs as a way to get experience composing & also just support the community and channels I love on UA-cam. It'd be an honor to have more people to work with than myself so the work can be done faster, be better and more diverse, and so I can share in the journey and support other musicians as well as be supported, as I'm really only at the start of my journey and have a lot to learn. Anyways if this interests you, I'd be honored if you let me know.
      All the best with your composing. I'll be listening. I'm listening now to the opening of "One Angry Clarinet & 8 Ded Cores" and am feeling super inspired by the gradual build of textures. I'm jealous of your ability and accomplishments and simultaneously excited and grateful to be able to listen to this music and reach out to you as I have.
      Your Pal & Fellow Musician,
      Connor.

    well done alex, i have a video request if you can do it.
    i've came into Orchestral / Epic and Trailer music after i was producing Electronic dance music.
    the hardest thing i found in this type of genres, is the music theory part of it.
    if you don't know, EDM music is based on a really simple stuff from music theory such as 4/4 (one chord at each bar) chord progressions based on triads and Major minor scales, here in this genre, it's really complecated. as well as the Sounds used in EDM are simple (Bassline - Synth Chords - and Main lead - Kick and Drums and A LOT OF WHITE NOISE) is this genre there are a lot of Stuff such as harps strings woodwinds....... which makes it more complicated.
    also i've been following your channel and watching your videos but i couldn't apply each of it because i don't know how to write this music, so if you make something like a ; Music theory and sounds design for beginners. i'll be appreciated
    and thank you for your tutorials. keep going Alex

    • @AlexMoukala
      @AlexMoukala  5 років тому +1

      Not entirely sure but I suppose it's because brass notes sound more fat / noticeable.
      The equivalent of a run in brass would probably be Rips, though they're much faster.

      the lower frequency range your instrument covers, the less clear it is (look on an EQ while playing high woodwinds compared to low brass), with other words in your example Low brass covers alot of frequencies which are not perfectly fitting to a set chord even if you play a single note. If you play a bunch of them within a fast period, only thing you achieve is getting alot of unwanted mud in the low frequencies. Therefor the lower your instrument goes the more simplistic you want it to be in an arrangment to not disturb other instruments. That´s why all the runs are usually covered by Marimbas, Woodwinds, Violins, Piano and Harps.

    • @Conrick
      @Conrick 5 років тому

      @@brodiemarshall729 so basically the only fitting instrument for brass runs would be a Trumpet, but here´s the thing. Brass instruments are naturally louder and most of the time trumpets lead the song. Runs are meant kinda as an addition to complement your song and widen it up, also make it sound more interesting. So if you are using Trumpets and they would play for example runs, which Instrument are you supposed to use to contest them for the lead of your song (not that this would be something you want in your track)
