If you are fascinated with this guy's performance, then watch the video in slow motion...you will be surprised to see numerous mistakes that he has hidden behind his blinding speed...
Agreed. His techniques are lighting fast, but the timing of the moves seemed awkward -- although that may just be the way he learned the kata. Futhermore I noticed a lack of use of his hands during move transitions and open fingers during knife hands (may be acceptable in tournament, idk)
No matter what haters say , the guy is good... And as a human being he could have mistakes performing a Kata. But my question is could any of the haters do better than him???
Its not hating my friend the people in the comments said basic small mistakes that he have done while doing this while for example his kotkutsu dachi was wider and at one point he was in zen kutsu dachi with his toes.....these are some basic mistakes that a black belt wont do.....in kata the timing , the flow , speed and mainly more than that technique matters...... mistakes can happen but u hav e to know pointing mistakes isnt hating !!!
Every karateka who knows Valdesi's style also knows that he is certainly not the right guy for Kanku Dai! With few fancy movements to show off, Kanku Dai is a very honest kata that shows how beauty can derive from simplicity (remember: heian katas derive from Kanku Dai). It's length and basic techniques make it easy to spot the practitioner's basic mistakes- and Valdesi makes a lot of those. Although I am definitely not a fan of his style I aknowledge his speed and charisma. When doing Shotokan Kata, he should stick to Gankaku, Gojushiho Sho, Unsu....
Kanku dai is a Chinese kata. It was later split up to make the hian katas. This guy has no understanding of the rhythm of kanku dai. The kata should take at least 1.40 to complete. I did this kata for my brown belt. Next I am doing empi.
@Capitan Pollito No, it's the other way around. Kanku-Dai derives from "Kūsankū" which was a named after a Chinese diplomat that traveled to Okinawa. "Tōde" Sakugawa trained for Kūsankū and developed a kata from his teachings. Later on Itosu Anko split the Kūshankū kata into the Heian katas (Pinan at that time). Gichin Funakoshi then changed the name to more Japanese names and called them Kanku-Dai and Heian.
@ TheLeviathanFilm I agree with you! This also probably being a WKF tournament (not JKA or other shotokan) means that all katas are transformed into something they where not ment to be :(
this man has great execution in terms of power and focus, but I would argue that the accuracy of his moves and his timing in many places falls short of what this kata is supposed to look like
I don't like his rendition. I know that almost each dojo has its own way of interpreting of some movements and the same kata may seem slightly different still remaining on the master's level but here I see the apparent mistakes (or - at least - very weird interpretation) in a few techniques. Undoubtly, he would get quite poor notes on the shotokan competitions I used to participate in. I'd like to see his bunkai of some moves (especially in the final part of the kata).
He is fast and that is ok but technique is very bad..but that is today's karate..poor techinqe and all of that is more like modeling than real karate...
his technique is horrible ... if you want to see technique go watch ueda, hidemoto kurihara, nozomi oshima, fukuhara etc ... they're just as fast if not faster than valdesi , but they show proper hip work, proper shifting of weight and balance from one move to the next, proper pivoting on turns, and nothing of this flashy stuff that has ruined shotokan karate
It's sport or show karate, like gymnastics routines at the Olympics, not genuine combat karate, for that see H. Kanazawa do this & the difference will be obvious.
I am old fashion practitioner who see those flashy movement with poor definition of the technique...if you go to the best karate series and see the katas you will understand what I mean...
he's fast. yet too jumpy. too much adjusting of leg positions when changing stances and these katas he's doing lack the spiritual flow. it's like he can't wait to get done!
+Draconic Dk Nope, it was correct. This was a "shitei kata". In WKF tournaments there were 8 katas, and you had to be able to do at least one of them, if not two, it has been too long since I competed. Different major schools were given control over different kata. Empi and Kankudai were the official "Shotokan kata" and this is done correctly in the Shotokan style. This requirement was dropped at the end of 2012. Of course that does not make this kata right and yours wrong, or vice versa. Different schools have different versions of kata. If a kata works, it works and is not "wrong".
Madre mia tio te has coronado.
He is cheating by taking shortcuts when executing the techniques. His heels are not ankered. This is just a fancy show off. Karateka who train the traditional shotokan know that kata is way deeper than this.
Taylor GangGaming So you claim that referees who judge kata competitions can do them better than the competitors themselves? I don't need to have his speed to see his errors.
very poor technique. as ever, he turns on the ball of the foot on ashi-zenkutsu instead of on the heel; hikite is shit; and he keeps doing these weird little flicking movements with his arms before each technique, which is kind of useless and weak.

You're right, and he's not smooth in his movement, i didn't like his kata style
His heel keeps moving backwards
This was the peak kata standard 10 years ago, a decade comes with alot of change.

One of my favorite forms of all time. I performed in many demonstrations, testings, and competitions.

I agree. Too many shortcuts and wrong timing on his pauses and slow emphasizing movements. He also almost went Sandan after the second Nukite. xD

Haven’t done this kata in years
I will be performing kanku dai at a tournament this weekend and uploading it (already uploaded basai dai and empi)

Too fast to be Kanku dai. It should be slower than this performance, with properly rithm changes. An example of good Kanku dai is Koji Arimoto
You re right! Some hand movements left too short or incomplete because of speeding. Excellent power expression thou.
