I used to make air vessels professionally. Each was hydrostatically tested to more than twice their max operating pressure. The really big ones would have their joints checked by x-ray. Coded welders, critically stored rods, low hydrogen steel.

My dad worked on fuel tanks. He did this all through the height of summer in Western Australia. He was about 30years old otherwise he never could have done it, But I digress, because they were fuel tanks the weld joints had to be x-rayed, now as I think about his suffering doing this job, I have a new respect for his work. Day in day out very very hot in summer very very cold in winter and not much to show for it except a weekly wage for a gruelling job and a son who didn't see the hardships he went through.

My poor old Dad would turn over in his grave if he saw these poor fellows welding like this. I saw my dad take almost a week off work when he only got a side flash from an arc welder, all of that in terrible pain in a darkened room. Closing your eyes has no effect, ultra violet from an arc welder will pass easily through eyelids. I do feel very sorry for these poor souls no helmet mask so they can hold pieces of steel in place to weld it, no safety glasses or safety boots, this is so terrible to watch these poor guys taken advantage of in a climate of many many workers amd so few jobs. I commend these fellows for their valiant efforts under such primitive conditions. First world countries are very lucky to have all the safety gear, unions and Government rules and regulations. Good on you for rising above it all, also good luck in your work. Watching further it's not so bad one fellow has a full face head welding helmet.

First world countries are not ‘lucky’ to be working in better and safer conditions. It was like this everywhere at one time, it was worse than this at one time in the U.K., but time has moved on and the third world countries refuse to even try to keep up, so sod them! They have a Space programme in India and will be a nuclear power ‘at any cost’ but they don’t give a toss for the workers. The workers are spineless and don’t/won’t ‘fight’ for improvement, they will never have better conditions unless they stand and fight for them. Good luck to them, but I don;t feel sorry for them.

In Malaysia, these are called pressure vessels. They can only be done by factories licensed by the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (aka DOSH). All pressure vessels like this follow ASME Code Sect VIII Div I and can only be done by certified welders in licensed factories. Each are tested to at least 1.3 times their allowable pressure. (1.5 to 2 is usual). Non Destructive Testing (NDT) such as Dye Pen Test (DPT) and Radiography on the welds may be done. We do this all the time but never like what is shown in this video. All our workers wear PPE. That's the law. In this video I suspect injuries such as cuts are a frequent occurrence. One never handle the edges of a freshly cut steel with bare hands. They are very sharp!

They used a tiny single cylinder compressor to test the tank for leaks. Don't think it could develop enough pressure to actually proof test it. I wonder how many have lost fingers or toes handling those steel sheets.

I would be very worried having one of these untested pressure cylinder's in a workshop. Stick welded, contaminated welding. No X Ray of the quality of the welding. If one was to blow up it can and most probably will kill someone. One Dodgy coat of blue paint hides everything.

A humble question: Why the overkill in steel plate thickness? Is that to add extra safety margin just for (lack of trust) the welders variable skill levels? For tensile strength it’s not required. Even if the steel quality is crappy.
    Kind regards

May i bounce some points off you?... if you don't mind. The first assumption i have would be that they use what is easily available. The second guess is that they are using what seems to be AC transformer welders, these have very limited settings... for example I own one that can weld at 50amp or 90amp or 130 Amp or 200 Amp. Nothing in-between. They probably try use a thickness that best limits easy burn through from the limited welding current settings. If a tank of this size were properly engineered, 5mm plate ( of good quality) would probably be the needed thickness, and it looks to me like that is about 5mm. I agree it would not need that much to achieve the tensile requirements.. but depending on the construction code... safety factor and corrosion allowance usually leaves you with around 5mm for a tank of that diameter at about 1100kpa design, (minimum thickness calculations as layed out by the code...ie Asme 8.1 or AD2000 etc). It's seldom piston compressors will push 1100kpa but it's the most common compressor tank in the west. Furthermore the tanks need to be structurally stable.. they allowed limited bulging and flexing under hydro test.I'm intruged... what nature of engineering did you primarily work in? I currently own a pressure equipment inspection company and am completing my engineering studies slowly as i get a chance(I have 1 semester left). I first built industrial boilers and qualified as a welder and then moved into project management in petroleum storage and handling prior to going into Inspection. Always keen to learn from retired folks insight.

      @@POTGIETERDAVID hi
      Thx for posting.
You may have a point as regards the welder. I don’t remember what they used but with fixed presets as you mentioned one has less options left than choosing a pin that welds hotter (or changing thickness which is unnecessary expensive and heavy or too weak).
As regards structural stability there is no physical shape that is more stable than a sphere. No 2 after that is a shape like a barrel with a half sphere at each end and no 3 a compressor tank shape. These shapes are extremely strong resisting torsion and bending. The plate thickness determines the resistance against denting (with and without internal pressure).
So the structural integrity would not be the strength issue one has to address primarily. Or secondary. Steel quality and thickness + weld quality together with vibrations from the motor affects much more.
I was working for a multi national company manufacturing trucks for light to heavy haulage. We designed and produced everything on the trucks chassis except some minor parts like alternators, pneumatic brake valves and electrical wires etc.
We delivered detailed instructions for fitting body work on the chassis and as an example when fitting big tanks on the chassis frame one would have to add an auxiliary frame and very special brackets between truck chassis and the tank due to the extreme rigidity of tanks.
Good luck with your study and business!
      Kind regards
      Anders
