@joseph joster: I read your comment and was expecting to hear “... And Justice for All”. I bet a bass orchestra version would be mind-blowing, considering how “Orion” sounds!
Originally it was a Rabbath endpin, now some guys invented to use it with that angle too. He also uses a extra-heavy bow (MUCH heavier than normal) and here has his bass tuned a 4th higher. Very good musician.
Having played Double bass for a few years, I can imagine this would be incredibly difficult. I've played some RHCP, and Avenged Sevenfold, but it's so much more difficult than bass guitar. Also, the high notes in this are great, way to go guys.
It's an angled endpin. I've never seen one in person but apparently it increases physical potential in bow strokes and some how utilizes that to produce a larger sound.
yes, I don't know what the guy on the left is tuned to since he's playing really high solo parts from the tune, but that I can see that that bass is a 5 string, I'm sure some of them have piccolo or semi piccolo tunings, but the standard bass line for this tune is tuned standard EADG low to high respectively. I have the official sheetmusic/tab book for this album and the only song that's not standard is "The thing that should not be" which is in D, all others are in E standard
Rabbath is big on the angled endpin, it gives more access to the upper register with leaning way over the bass. In a masterclass I was at he said it should feel more like a cello, only standing up. I like it, less tension on my shoulder that has had a lot of problems.
I was just looking for Orion cover on cello, and couldn't find one, but found this and I like it very much. It's a shame the recording quality isn't good - would love to hear recorded in studio.
So... I realize that the angled endpin helps alot, I play bass myself, but I also realize that it is quite excessively annoying to the eye for some unknown reason... Go figure.
2nd. from left, Kennedy. 3rd, Larry Hutchinson, Detroit Symphony Orchestra. The 1st. bassist, a student of Diana Gannett, University of Michigan, now a major player. The 4th., I just don't remember...:)
Woundtootight From left to right - Donovan Stokes, John Kennedy, Larry Hutchinson, David Murray This is Donovan's arrangement. He brought it to the conference and we put it together that day. It was a blast - didn't realize it would kind of get a life of it's own here on the internets…
@moustatache With an upright... no, with his electric, he would destroy all of them, two differnet instruments so you can't say he would have less than a quater of the talent of them...
don't be stupid. the bass is not the same as a cello and this is four part piece, apocalyptica has three part arrangements. oh ya, they never played orion either.. :P this shit's original and awesome
"I had no idea how tiny these guys were till they brought out those violins."
I kinda died at that.
Also, this is pretty epic.
You saw that comment too i think it was was hilarious I was dying
Cliff is smiling in heaven.
...and justice for double bass
Rob scallop
Master of bass

The guy on the lefts end pin is bothering me more than it should be
+Tony RR No kidding
no, it makes sense why it's bothersome
idek tbh laborie style it's bent on purpose to distribute weight better
idek tbh same

endpin? more like BENDpin. haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
I had no idea Louis CK played bass
lol I also thought it looked like him
+Thingsandstuff They're lucky everything is to scale.
this is one of the few songs I play at full blast on my amplifiers, if I'm gonna blow it out I'm gonna do it on this song
BASS SOLO TAKE ONE
Exactly what I was thinking
Just stumbled into this. God alone knows how I got here. 3 years old, good job the internet is forever. Excellent stuff.
That`s why basses are BEAST
Donovan is the coolest guy ever, his knowledge on classical music is amazing.
Having played Double bass for a few years, I can imagine this would be incredibly difficult. I've played some RHCP, and Avenged Sevenfold, but it's so much more difficult than bass guitar. Also, the high notes in this are great, way to go guys.
Take that Apocalyptica
Underrated comment
The guy on the far left: is that a five string with an extension and high C string?! Wtf. That's insane.
Never heard it played in D before, that was pretty cool!
I'm a double bass player, could someone explain to me the man on the left's end pin?
what would you like to be explained?
It's an angled endpin. I've never seen one in person but apparently it increases physical potential in bow strokes and some how utilizes that to produce a larger sound.
BōtokuRand My old bass coach had one, though it wasn't angled in that direction. It makes it a lot nicer to hold as you don't have to hold the weight.
Thanks so much guys :D
I was wondering that too because all the basses I've had never did that
Orion!!!
+)
His endpin is specially made to do that. Won’t you all relax? His bass is also tuned up a fourth, if you didn’t notice.
if the aliens come they will come for this
That guys endpin is awesome.
I don't know enough bass players to do this :(
Can also be done violin, viola, and cello
+Anagh Arya Or guitar, guitar, bass, drums
im a bass player
Mr. Lawrence Hutchinson, third from the right, my son's teacher. Great guy.
Respect to all but especially to the soloist on the LHS of screen. This wonderful performance was quite mesmeric!
My favorite Metallica song.
where do these tiny men learn to play the fiddle so well?
Loved it! I miss playing so much!
Is it just me, or do I hear a great, very suitable composition for a bad ass film?
The guy on the left has the coolest end pin I've ever seen
Er...sir, I think something may be a bit wrong with your endpin.
im pretty sure its to offset the center of gravity to make it lighter for the left hand
If you notice, the offset allows him to stand up straight for the most part instead of hanging on his bass. What a great idea.
Very good cover
I wonder if there's a nega-verse where these guys are playing four guitars and AJFA is all bass...
Mark Arandjus
bass in AJFA? never heard of that
So great!
I'd like to enjoy this, but his ENDPIN.
The player on the left plays the higher notes, so he needs to reach much lower on his neck and the pin helps him with that.
Another rendition of “Orion”? Yes!!!! Keep ‘em coming! Cliff ‘em all!
This would be SOOOO Amazing in an epic movie battle! WOWWW! I want this on my ipod so bad.

AW HELL YA
This is HEAVY!
Anyone know where to get the music for this?
Rabbath is big on the angled endpin, it gives more access to the upper register with leaning way over the bass. In a masterclass I was at he said it should feel more like a cello, only standing up. I like it, less tension on my shoulder that has had a lot of problems.
Maravilhos.Parabéns. Será que o pessoal do Metallica já ouviu isso?
I was just looking for Orion cover on cello, and couldn't find one, but found this and I like it very much. It's a shame the recording quality isn't good - would love to hear recorded in studio.
Wish i could get a studio version of that
This is amazing
Who are the bassists. Do I see David Murray on the right? Nice quartet! Thanks for posting this.
Holy mother of Bass :/
Cliff would have loved it. (But the others players should have been still during 'his' quiet pizzicato moment.)
I didn't know you could play Darude Sandstorm on the double bass
So... I realize that the angled endpin helps alot, I play bass myself, but I also realize that it is quite excessively annoying to the eye for some unknown reason... Go figure.
who cares if its original.. i love apocalyptica.
and this is just awesome
it's off the master of puppets album track 7 @ 8 minutes and 27 seconds guys!

I want that sheet music, please!!!!!
@moustatache With an upright... no, with his electric, he would destroy all of them, two differnet instruments so you can't say he would have less than a quater of the talent of them...

the guy on the far left looks like lars ulrich with a beard :S
HE ENDPIN BE BENDIN
I sympathize.
@schimmelpenninq It sounds out of tune because they're playing it in D, and it was written in E.
