After Hurricane Helene knocked out power and closed roads, I found myself relying heavily on a few key products to get my family through the aftermath. With a million people in the dark, I turned to trusted gear from Grayl to stay hydrated, cook meals, and navigate daily life without electricity. In this video, I showcase the lightweight, durable, and highly effective items that made a big difference, including the GeoPress, dining set, and camp stove. This is real-world survival, using gear I trust when it matters most.

Yes please, a tutorial on how to properly use a tourniquet would be much appreciated!
That will happen for sure- thanks for watching!
if you put in the search window of youtube there you will fine tons of videos on the proper use of a tourniquet .
Be very, very careful in the use of tourniquets.
Incorrectly applied and if left on for too long, they can do more harm than good.
I worked in the Underground Mining Industry and thus (we all) had to be certificated First Aiders with after 35+ years therein, had more than one opportunity to tend to serious injuries.
@@thomasmusso1147 Yeah, I'm a bit afraid of them because of all that. I'm not sure how much I trust just any channel on UA-cam for advice on them either. But I trust JJ and I"m looking forward to learning about them from him.
It’d be best not to do this instruction yourself because the liability that can go with it.
I got the plastic grayl , tested it and it made creek water taste like Ice Mountain bottled so I ordered the titanium one.
Right on! I’m a big believer in their products.. You will LOVE the titanium one ☝🏻
@@FueltheFires I do too. I just wish I lived where there was more wild water to be found. In your survival island challenge, right at the start I knew my Grayl is the one item I would have brought. By the end I thought I would have been really happy with that choice.
G'day mate. How about making a vid on cleaning & maintenance on all product that you use? Or even some modification/customisation to improve functionality.? The Do's & Don'ts including possibilities etc. Cheers!
Yes! We can do that for sure 👍🏻
Yes I would like to see the gear you use. There has been great strides in gear used in backpack, prepping and survival gear in the last 50 years. I don't do much camping and zero backpacking these days but that may Chang as the grandkids get older.
I can certainly do that. I’m actually teaching at Blackie Thomas’ Silverwolves (55 and up) event this weekend. A lot of the folks here are interested in learning so they can take the grandkids camping. I appreciate you watching and I will make that happen in the future 👍🏻
Grayl cons:
•Heavy.
•Bulky.
•Small capacity.
•Can’t filter dirty water.
•Can’t back flush filter.
•Can only filter 40-60 gallons.
•Replacement filter $30.
•Non replaceable gasket.
• Ridiculously expensive.
Smart water bottle or any water bottle and a sawyer squeeze is better in EVERY SINGLE WAY, and costs less than $50.
I respectfully disagree as I have had (and seen) more than 1 issue with them.. I switched from the Sawyer products several years ago
@@FueltheFires those failures are incredibly rare. Mostly due to improper use or freezing. The sawyer squeeze is worlds better than the Gayle on every front.
👍👍👍 .. I cannot fault your reasoning.
'Perhaps' one reason for the Grayl's popularity is the current generation's obsession with 'convenience' and of course 'marketing' .. follow the money 😏.
But then, I'm a 'Boomer' (YOB 1950) and grew up navigating and living with 'inconvenience' that in today's age, would be probably considered 'intolerable' 😳 😊.
Sawyer doesn’t purify, it’s basically a glorified Brita filter
@@abc123def98 It removes nasties and can be back flushed. You can add a Katadyn in line carbon filter for $25. I've spent money on so many filters over the years. Now every bag I have is running the little squeeze kits. I even run em in line on camelbak sip top bottles and in my bladder bag. Because they ate so cheap the add multiple layers of redundancy.
This is a great practical gear review, of what works for you and how you use it. Thanks for using this format.
Thank you very much.. It was kind of impromptu. I just thought this might be useful to some people and just glad you appreciate it! Thanks for watching 🔥
Glad to hear you and your family are safe. Our family in Boone, NC made it thru the floods, but like everyone, are in the now what? phase. I love my Grayl, I have a couple. I do have Sawyee squeeze for large volume scenarios, but Grayl is my go to. Stay safe out there.
Thank you and I wish all of you Godspeed on the road back to “normal”.. I know how tough it can be.. People have no idea what that’s like if they haven’t experienced it… Thanks for watching 🔥
It is good to see what you are using in actual time of need. Thanks
Hope all is improving from the storm. Family up there too, they are having to boil water. I am glad you offer trustworthy tested personally gear. Links would help us especially to the thing that fits and works for you. More videos please on gear so i can hopefully set them up for upcoming storms...
Thank you! Glad your family is ok and “doing the things”.. I appreciate the positive feedback and I will make more videos of me using the stuff I trust. Thanks for watching!
One issue with the Grayl (I have one) is the warning that the filter system doesn't react well to freezing temperatures. In fact, 3 freeze/thaw cycles, they warn that it might not function as expected. I had it in my jeep, thinking if I slid off into a ravine or something, I'd at least be able to hunker down with melted snow and....well...crap...maybe not. Quote: Freezing Temperatures
Unlike most water filters or purifiers, the Grayl UltraPress can be accidentally frozen and withstand up to three (3) freeze/thaw cycles. Beyond three cycles, purifier performance begins to diminish and the manufacturer recommends that the purifier cartridge be replaced. Still, that’s a handy feature in case you happen to get caught out in the cold unexpectedly, especially in early spring or late autumn. Quote ends from SectionHiker.
Filter/Purifiers are one of those items you have to be careful with. The Grayl is the only one I’ve seen that can be frozen and still used (according to them). I still would recommend not to let that happen. What I do is keep it in my bag that I carry every day. When in sub temps I actually wear it around my neck and tucked in my clothes to keep it from freezing. The other alternative is collecting snow/ice and boiling it. Perhaps this winter I will do a video on this subject.
My biggest problem with them is donating to climate activists and people who want to lock us out of public land.
@@everydayadventure7512I’ll look into it
Oooo … I never thought of that. I carry mine in my car, too. The key would be, I think, to make sure the filter is dry, which means I need to remember to dry it out completely after use.
I really think the gear videos will have to change now. Helene really changed my pov. We considered our rv lifestyle like being turtles. Our 72 hr food and fire/water/first aid/shelter gear was in a great duffle in the back of the truck. We ended up wading out in the pitch dark during the super fast flooding. Lost everything except the sweaters, flashlights, and purse I was able to grab. Lost everything. My pov about bugging in-out has completely changed now. Less is best.
👊🏼🔥👊🏼
Was discussing with a squared away guy during/after Helene about the difference in storing H2O vs the ability to produce clean H2O. For me, I choose to always have the asset of filtration & purification of what's already in nature, not the liability of dealing with what would need to be a ton of H2O storage. Great presentation & mindset, Sir. SAR mentality at work here 🤙🏼
You understand brother. This is what we do when called out to disaster scenes. Storing water can be a pain at times. Not that someone shouldn’t but I believe in having the ability to take care of it should something happen. 👊🏻🔥👊🏻
You're looking really trim JJ! Keep going, it's working, you're looking good!
I know what you mean about not wanting to be in the house. sleeping outside in your hammock. That's what I've been doing. I either sleep in my hammock up on the roof, or under the big pine tree in the yard. I love it. Sometimes cooking outside too. I ran out of propane a week or two back and the only difficult thing for me was deciding which of my excessive number of stoves I wanted to use. Sometimes I used 2 of them at the same time, even though I only needed one to cook with.
While you may be confined to your yard, you have a beautiful yard! I wouldn't mind camping out there.
Thank you! I’ve been working on it for awhile now. After my injury it’s been a difficult road and I appreciate the encouraging words. Glad you can appreciate the simple things as well. I’m fortunate to have a beautiful place to “hang out” in- pun intended😂.. As far as the stove situation goes, I too (or my wife actually) will use multiple stoves to cook on as well.. Comes in quite handy.. Thanks for the support and positive feedback 👊🏻🔥👊🏻
Very good video. Nice of you to cover the real items you use and why you use them. Glad you and the family are safe.
Thank you- I really appreciate that 👊🏻🔥👊🏻
I had the same problem with the Pocket rocket, but purchased a 6x6 inch stainles steel mesh (Bunsen burner mesh), which is also handy for grilling food.
That’s exactly what I use when no one is looking 😂.. Works very well actually 👍🏻
i learned that little trick from Alfieasthetics
I purchased my Grayl because of you and a UK friend I get out with. That UK friend uses a titanium plate but it has a slight belly in the middle of the plate which annoys me. So I saw Grayl do a Ti plate with no "belly" in the middle. Purchased it and it is the BEST.
Once it is seasoned up you wont get a better cook pan come plate,,, ever!
Nice layout, JJ.
Awesome! Thanks for the positive feedback and posting your experience here- I appreciate that 👊🏻🔥👊🏻
Excellent subject , worth discussion.
The More Effort (Preparations) you put in , the Better the chances of comfort Survival become.
People need to decide how best to allocate their Resources , after a Major SHTF.
9:15...The Solo Stove or any other natural resource burner, is soo much flexible than the limited fuel cannister stoves.
With the Cannister stoves, you have to ration out your fuel , or else you'll be back to the basics of collecting dry materials for a fire pit.
It doesn't take much to get some long nails, or wire mesh to stabalize your cup....lol
Thanks.. Yes I use a small 6” x 6” wire mesh grill on mine or use my titanium tent stakes on the Vargo
Really appreciate the video. I am very picky about what I buy. It needs to work and be efficient for me. With a family, I have to make sure what I spend money on is worth it. I have the same opinion about backing a product. It great to find someone who feels the same as I do. Please keep doing more videos like this.
Praying that everything gets back to normal soon.
I would enjoy your take on which "kit" is better and more versatile.
Stay safe.
Thank you.. We were very fortunate this time as many others weren’t. We have much to be grateful for. I will make sure to discuss the gear in upcoming videos and thanks for watching!
You're videos are the best out of all the content on SD.
I appreciate the vote of confidence! I’m proud to be surrounded by a great group of guys on this team. Thanks for supporting the channel 👊🏻
Really well done. I'm not picky about what I buy because you just don't know what you don't know.......so videos like this are super interesting. Thanks.
Appreciate the SD video's. Yes, definitely practical vids, like what is it you actually use and do on the regular.
Thanks
Cool! We can make it happen 👍🏻
Yes, videos on what you have been using while yard camping (storm survival) would be great! We don’t get hurricanes this far inland, but we do get tornados and massive snow storms, both of which can bring the power down for days.
Great video buddy have a good day hope you all rebuild quickly
Glad to hear more from you.
Roger that- thanks for watching 🔥
Would really appreciate an in depth review of your edc and bugout bag(s?). Not just the gear you carry, but the bag you choose and why.
I would love to do that!
Yes, Grayl is the gear.
👊🏻🔥👊🏻
Thanks for sharing JJ 👊🔥👊
You’re welcome 👊🏻🔥👊🏻
Hi J.J.! Great video I like those vids where one could learn of the real important pieces of gear. I recently got my titanium
Geopress and it is a real beauty besides it is really sturdy and practical. Please carry on I really appreciate it. Thanks for this very helpful video and as always stay safe and all the best from Austria!🇦🇹🫡🤠👍🏕🔥
Hey! Thank you!! I really appreciate the positive feedback and I will continue to bring the heat- thanks for watching 👊🏻🔥👊🏻
Yes I do keep it up👌👌👌👌
Cool! Will do 👍🏻
Thanks for the walkthrough. Stay safe!
Absolutely! I appreciate you watching 🔥
That would be nice to see your full kit
Roger that- will do 👍🏻
Please let us know where the products are made. If you could film a strictly American made vital gear video that would be great. Even European made gear has been extremely high quality and worth the extra expense in my experience. I love the Euro made Primus stuff. Thanks for all your doing.
I will have to contact my friends with Grayl and see about that… I will have to think on the video idea but can certainly make that happen sometime in the future.. Thanks for the positive feedback 👊🏻
Thank you for the video.
Thank you for watching!
I enjoy the few videos I’ve see. Greatly appreciated. How about watching you actually make coffee / food with your cool gear?
Thanks! I will probably film some stuff this week while I’m teaching.. Thanks for the suggestion 👍🏻
Would love to see how to use the Cat tourniquet. And any other how ent/med how to's. Like gunshot, stab wounds, water illness, food illness, smoke inhilation, etc. Also kids on the gear you use.
I can make these things happen- thanks for the feedback 👊🏻
I like your gear videos.
Thank you!
I like all those video ideas, but tracking skills would be pretty cool coming from you with your background.
I will definitely do tracking videos in the future.. Thanks for the suggestion!
Ok JJ - “Where can I buy the titanium bowl, plate & spoon/fork + brand name”???? I love it when you believe in a product that you share specific. (I need that) so please do tell us (me) so I won't waste money, but purchase will if you use it I know its good!!!
As he said they are all Grayl products, same people who make the filter bottles.
The items can be found on the Grayl website 👍🏻
Excellent points, Brother !!!
But, no list of items (and possible links) ?
Keep up the great work !!!
Good practical items.
Love their stuff!
Yes, please show what gear is working for you.
I wish they made a lid for the Ti UltraPress cup
Same..
Msr are brilliant cooking kit. And other cookers. The grayl should make there own burners
Yeah, definitely and then they can donate more money to their "climate justice" initiatives and "anti petroleum" groups while selling people products made from and using petroleum.
I have a geopress and ultra press Can I just buy the titanium cup for
My existing grayls?
No.. But Grayl worked with Pathfinder to design a stainless nesting cup for the plastic GeoPress.. You would have to go to Amazon to find a nesting cup for the UltraPress.. They aren’t sold as such.. You would have to look at the dimensions and order one to fit.. Typically they are 350-450 ml cups.. Hope that helps 👍🏻
Love my Grayls. I'm still torn between the Ti and the regular Geo with SS cup. The Grayl, SAK, Bic, and poncho are the base of my kit.
Was that stove the little one offered by Grayl, Pathfinder, and all the other BRS clones?
I’ve got a guy with Pathfinder telling me they don’t sell this one.. It’s another clone they sell
@@FueltheFires yeah, I thought it was this one they phased out on their Titanium line that they discontinued. It's hard to keep up with anymore. I have several like this and the stainless one from PF. I actually prefer my Fire Maple stoves. There's some great lightweight Titanium stoves as well.
@@miconn69 cool.. I will check those out!
What is the name of the mini stove and where to buy, thanks.
That dude forearms defy logical proportions
Spinach 😂
i have drank out of many springs, seeps and rivers in the great basin region when i was in scouting during the 60s and 70s and in the deep south where i have lived for the last 40 yrs and have never gotten sick.
is it acquired immunity or just good luck. i think to much has been exaggerated by the water filter companies and those who have never been outdoors.
use em if you got em if you have never drank from a garden hose in your youth.
yes, better safe than sorry.
Nice gear. Thanks for sharing. 🇺🇲🌲🔥🔪
My pleasure- thanks for watching! 👊🏻🔥👊🏻
Great vid. What brand/model is that micro stove?
what was the brand of the stove attachement he liked?
It’s on the Grayl website
More gear videos please that you use. Thanks.
Can do! 🔥🔥🔥
What company makes the smaller titanium stove?
Do you offer links to gear.
I don’t.. Perhaps I could talk to my friends at Grayl and see if we can make that happen.. Thanks for watching!
Where do I buy that stove man?
It’s offered on the Grayl website 👍🏻
And where’s our federal government?
Ha joking man
I wish you well
I’ll be back home in TN in about 3 months after living in the NE for the last 24 years
Looking forward to coming home ✌️🇺🇸
Right on! On all accounts 😂.. Welcome back to the Southeast!
It's crazy how many people are addicted to caffeine and need a coffee everyday.
Hi bro I wish I had a gral maybe soon
Hey! They are a worthy investment for sure.. You can always start with the plastic UltraPress and an extra filter to get you going
OH Man, you never said what that little stove was! what is it? < J
It’s offered on the Grayl website 👍🏻
What is " this thing" called? The adapter thingy on the gas tank to hold a cup ... I must have missed where I could get one if I knew the name. Grail?
It's call a Stove. It's made of Titanium.
@@unfi6798 the little thing that clips on to the propane bottle which you rest a cup or bowl on is known as a "stove". I'll see if Amazon will pull it up.
Keep to facts only.
Stove...grayl make salot of things , like he said
Good stuff they put out 👍🏻
I couldn't find response, but my bad.. I forger it's not just us around a fire 🔥 🎶 😍. My bad, never again will I make such jokes on a family friendly account... smh.. understandably.
Where do you live? Why are you not going to ground zero? Are they not your neighbors? Are they not your fellow Patriots? I have watched your videos for probably 2 years. Learning all the do's and dont's for SHTF. We'll, it has hit the FAN! Even if they are not your neighbors, why are you not going to help? Just promoting your brands? I hope you will re-consider and put your words into action. GO HELP PEOPLE! GO HELP YOUR FELLOW AMERICANS!
You actually have no idea what he is or is not doing. You only expose your arrogance and ignorance by making comments like that. Slow your roll there highspeed.
I think you missed that I couldn’t go because the roads are closed.. I have plans to go soon..
@FueltheFires ...You have my complete apology! My comment was completely knee-jerk and uncalled for. I feel so bad for all the folks that are suffering and feel abandoned by their government... And I get frustrated.
Thank you for responding to my comment and giving me the opportunity to apologize. And thank you for going to help! We are going at the end of this month as my work schedule allows.
And yes, I did miss that you are going. Love your content BTW. Keep on and be safe!!
Lock your e bike out 😊
