In the playoff game against the Pacers when he hit the floor he fractured his cheek bone and had a concussion but when they started falling behind he went back out to help his team seal the win. What a lot of people don't know is the night before that game he spent in the hospital in traction for his back. He broke his back in 85 but played seven more years. They had to do techniques to unlock his spine and reset it then he would have to do exercises and such for three or four hours to hold it in place so he could play. He couldn't sit on the bench at this point. He would lay in the floor in front of the bench and he had to lay down on planes when they traveled. You could tell he was wearing a back brace in that game. Robert Parish said he never took pills, shots or pain blockers in his entire career. He just dealt with the pain. In one game he was one steal away from a quadruple double in just three quarters and he came out of the game. When his coach realized this he asked him if he wanted to go back in and he said no he'd done enough damage. They were pretty far ahead. The scoreboard was what mattered to Larry not the stats. He was great to watch. It was so exciting because you never knew what he was going to do but you knew it would be amazing.
All true but the Rifleman was showboating after Larry left the court and he was watching in the locker room. Look at his face while he is waiting to check back in, he was mad. 😅
I love that the Magic and Larry rivalry ended up progressing to the point that they're such good friends they're more like brothers. To this very day also.
Bird is my all time favorite basketball player. Think about how skilled you have to be to tell the opposing players how you are going to score and from what spot on the court, and then to actually back it up...
100% The way I put it is if you switch Larry's brain into MJ or LB J they would both double their production, if you put either of their brains in Larry, he may not have made the NBA. MJ and LB J are 50/50 basketball IQ and athleticism, Bird is 80/20.
Yes, it is. Bird officially retired mid-August 1992, right after the Olympics. The Retirement Ceremony in February 1993 was a way for Larry to thank the fans, as well as an opportunity for the fans and the Celtics organization to farewell Bird. Proceeds went to a number of charities.
While attending college Larry's team was playing mine and we heard they had a future all American on their team. So during warm ups we tried to guess which black player he was. Well we were wrong and he beat our league champion team and set our arena scoring record! Loved your reaction, Happy New Year from Northern Michigan!
larry is one of only threeplayers to win the mvp three years on a row. he also was undefeated in the three point contest. winning the first three years it was held in a row. bird was also 6-0 against jordan in the playoffs. winning in a sweep both times
Larry is my favorite player. For the most beautiful basketball, check out the 1992 Dream Team documentary. 11 future Hall of Famers. Larry & Magic were co-captains. Whenever they played, everyone would be glued to their TVs. It was a surreal time. One of my favorite plays was when they competed in Portland. Magic to Jordan to Larry. Doesn’t get any better. One of the best documentaries I’ve ever seen. Several have reacted to the documentary in one shot. Best way to do it. Those that separated it into parts, parts are missing. You will not be disappointed.
2:00. How are these guys falling? Larry Bird was IMPOSSIBLE to defend! He hit 40% of his 3 pointers, 50% from the field, he could dunk on anyone & his court IQ for passing is one of the best in NBA history. Guys were falling because no one knew how defend a quadruple scoring threat! There is a reason that Larry Bird won 3 consecutive MVP awards.
Listen to the comments and watch -> Larry Bird Greatest Passer of All Time (Re-edit w/ New Footage) Bird has more full court dimes than most people have regular assists...Your jaw will be on the ground and youll see why he's Larry Legend...passed like Magic, jumper like MJ, 3ptr like Curry, rebound like Ewing (avg 10rpg career)...
They drafted him in 1978. But he stayed in college. He didn't get into the league until 1979. They changed the rule so they can't do that now because of bird.❤ keep watching more bird together you won't be disappointed. This is just a little sampling of what he could do. Great reaction. I subbed both of you boys!
Larry Bird is one of the most important NBA players ever, regardless of your top 10. For his heart, versatility, creativity, court vision, intelligence, and grit, there is no other player like him. Ppl who call him a strict shooter have never seen his passing game. He was and is one of a kind. My favorite player, and many ppl agree.
just subscribed-- you need to check out a few Larry Bird stories-hears a good one (LARRY BIRD STORIES THAT PROVE HE IS THE GREATES TRASH TALKER) another on is (LARRIY BIRDS GREATEST PASSer OF ALL TIME RE-EDITED EDITION) there are many more but this can get you started. good luck
Larry hit the floor and fractured his orbital bone. Went to the locker room, chugged a beer, then snuck out when the trainer turned his back. He had double vision and he picked the basket on the left on his first attempt and made it, so he shot at the one on the left the rest of the game. LEGEND.🐐
The NBA glory days. It's difficult to compare players from different generations. Bird's rookie stats: 21.3 points, 10.4 rebounds, 4.5 assists, 84 percent foul shooting and 41 percent three-point field goal accuracy. But that isn't the story of his greatness. He was a TEAM player. He only took 17.8 shots per game. His team play lifted Boston from a mere 29 wins to a league-best 61 in just one season. And the NBA championship in year two….
Larry was pure basketball! "They pay me to win games!" and that was always Larrys' focus! Any accolades that may have resulted from that goal was secondary to the quest of winning! Pure basketball!
Larry Bird joined the Celtics in 1979 and that year they improved from 29-53 to 61-21. Bird was the only player they had added, although they did have a different coach. The first year Larry and the Celtics met the Lakers (1984), the Celtics won the finals. As far as playing hurt. Before he started with the Celtics he shattered his knuckle and the surgeries he went through weren't able to return his finger to normal. The doctor and trainer for the Celtics looked at it and said he was "damaged goods", but Red Auerbach had him suit up, threw him a ball and had him show he could still play at a high level, so they signed him up. He has played with a fractured cheekbone, fractured eye orbiter bone, herniated disc in his back and other injuries. He had season ending surgeries in 1988 where they cut the Achilles tendons and removed bone spurs from Both of his feet. But the next season he came back and averaged 24.3Pts, 9.5TRb, 7.5Ast and 1.4 Stl.
The thing about those ankle breakers that looks like the defender just flat out sucks, is that nobody knew what he was going to do. You knew Magic would give the flashy pass, you knew Michael would shoot it. But nobody knew what Larry would do so no matter how they planned to defend him, he would pull something unexpected out of his bag. He made opposing players look like fools because of that. It’s hard to show that just with clips and highlights, but listen to the dudes who played against him if you don’t believe it.
People have forgotten how good Bird was = as a rookie he went to a 29 win team and with 1 player change to the roster in ML Carr and a new coach in Bill Fitch , Bird was the main reason Boston won 61 games = a 32 game turn around = the biggest single season improvement in NBA history. Bird won ROY by a big margin over Magic and was 4th in MVP. Then in the next 8 seasons in the MVP Bird was 2,2,2,1,1,1,3 and 2nd again. Bird created the 50 -40 90 club and won the first 3 = 3 point shoot outs . Bird is the best all around player I have ever seen.
Bird is great, the best white dude to play, but Jordan is still the GOAT, been watching the NBA since the 2 leagues merged, I still think Wilt was the most dominant player ever They changed the game because of Wilt
IMO, Magic & Larry resurrected the game of basketball...My dad loved basketball, but stopped watching, until the competition between Johnson & Bird was highlighted...What my Dad used to say, about Larry's game, is that it reminded him of someone, who wasn't only playing basketball, but also, volleyball, dodgeball, football, baseball, soccer, & strategic chess, all at the same time, & what made him so great 😊He certainly was one of the most unique & gifted players, I ever watched! I copied some links for you to watch or react to, that will explain how amazing Larry was 😊 50 Amazing Assists: ua-cam.com/video/baBdnA7cui0/v-deo.html Best Trash Talker: ua-cam.com/video/v7Id88T5DPs/v-deo.html Best Passer of all time: ua-cam.com/video/CExjzyTRxnQ/v-deo.html
One of the reasons that people were falling down in front of Bird is because he told them the play and then did exactly what he told them he would do. That combination of doubt that he would go through with it, and then his going through with it plays with your mind, and your mind controls your knees and ankles.
I’m a 5ft 1 in old broad don’t know BB mini golf is my thang!! What I love is setting color aside and I recognize here is the Greatness of The One & Only Almighty Above in you both cause it takes Greatness to recognize greatness amongst mortals. Subscribing to your channel cause it’s worthy!!
The strongest thing about Bird was how much his play was about the team goal, not about him looking good! His great shots were only equaled by his great passes and strategic manoeuvring on the court! In my opinion that makes him one of the very top players of all time!
1:54 guys fell guarding Bird because they were literally afraid of the possibilities, like am I gonna get the fake, the dime or the splash?? It was too much, plus the talking at the same time.. the whole game. The combination had guys just discombobulated… mind and body all confuzzled..
Great reaction. Larry is a legend for a reason. MJ learned from Larry. Larry...as a ROOKIE...with no real changes to the team...ADDED 32 wins. This is WITHOUT Parrish, McHale, Ainge, DJ.. MJ...as a rookie...added zero wins (the record was actually worse). Larry is an elite passer...including full court..."English" on the pass...behind head..behind the back...left hand...all pin point. And Larry won THREE 3pt contests in a row. Just like he won 3 MVPs in a row. And after 1985, his back was injured. During the 1988 season, bone spurs in both feet...surgery in '89 on both achilles. And that FALL...broke his cheeks bone, had concussion ..came back in without Dr's permission. Won.
The video kind of skipped over where they said he had broken his cheek in the game where he got hurt. Can you imagine coming back into a game and Dominating it with a broken cheek? No One would do that today
Bird made everyone look stupid. No matter if it was Jordan or Kareem or MJ! No one else dominated every aspect of the game, but Larry Bird. That makes him the #1 undisputed GOAT.
He and Magic battled each other through college, including the NCAA final game won by Magic because he had a much better team with Michigan than he did at Indiana State.
Jordan or Bird is a harder question that it first seems. - - Jordan will make you a fortune. Bird will make you a lot of money and you are guaranteed to win. - The two best clutch players ever. Jordan is the greatest singular talent ever. And Bird is the best all around player ever with the highest game I.Q. - You have to build a team that compliments Jordan. Bird will take four average players at a second tier college to the NCAA championship and turn the four NBA players you give him into great players and hall of famers.
To the Jordan fan- I loved MJ's time in the NBA, watched his games in real time back in the 80s and 90s. Incredible player. Amazing. But Bird is my favorite, IMO the best in the history of the game, MJ a close 2nd. Yes, he had a much shorter career due to back injuries, which plagued him in the last 3-4 seasons of an 11 year career. But for maybe 4-5 years, he was the absolute best in the league, and there were a lot of Hall of Famers in the game- MJ, Magic, Dr. J, Ewing, Barkley, Hakeem, Jabbar, Malone, Stockton, Isiah, etc. Bird, along with Magic, were the 800 lb gorillas in the NBA of the 80s, absolutely dominated in play, wins, charisma, popularity, everything.
If you want to see the list of Larry's opponents/ rivals, then you should check out the Making the Case: Larry Bird video by Clayton Crowley. Larry played (and beat) everyone back in the day.
Larry Bird's top time was the 2nd half of the 80's. He dominated the league at that point. Despite that, the Lakers were slightly better than the Celtics due to TWO megastars being on the team (Magic and Kareem), and the fact that they had a weaker conference so that they would get to the finals more often, and way less tired than the Celtics.
I grew up watching Bill Russell and KC Jones and company. MJ would always be my first pick in an all-time NBA team. Magic and Bird would come right behind.
I know the jabstep looks like nothing, but people HAD to guess with him. It's why Dr J says at the beginning, "you had to play the game like a thinker against him." It's why James Worthy said he'd rather guard Jordan than Bird - and Worthy was a HoFer that played at UNC with Jordan. The third dude that got dropped in the video was Dominque Wilkins, one of the most athletic NBAers ever. In today's NBA where any contact on a head fake gets you to the FT line, Bird would average 15 FTs a game.
My all time draft is #1 Jordan, #2 Bird and #3 Magic. Doesn't really matter the order. Bird accounted for the single greatest turnaround in NBA history his rookie year by dragging Boston from the gutter to 60 wins as a rookie. He didn't need to score 30 points per game every year. He was a willing passer and knew that getting his team involved was the #1 best way to make his team better. He averaged almost as many assists per game as Lebron while NOT being a "Point Forward" (i.e. dominating the ball, bringing it up the court, etc) and was a much better passer. Bird averaged double digit rebounds in an era of Powerful big men. Michael is my favorite player of all time and I also think he's the best. But Bird and Magic are right there with him. Holy Trinity of greatness.
The rivalry between Bird and Magic defined their era. Isiah would have been a great player in any era, but he was unfortunately fated to share his playing years with the greatest ongoing basketball contest of all time.
Depends I was in high school when Larry was running the league. Many Guys my age will say it’s Larry. Guys that didn’t see him play just can’t comprehend. Dude wanted to see who he played against. That era has more players in the top 75 than any other.
Bird retired in 1993 but played on the REAL Dream Team in 1992: Laettner, Christian 22 Robinson, David 26 Ewing, Patrick 29 Bird, Larry 35 Pippen, Scottie 26 Jordan, Michael 29 Drexler, Clyde 30 Malone, Karl 28 Stockton, John 30 Mullin, Chris 28 Barkley, Charles 29 Johnson, Magic 32
One of those guys "falling" was Dominique Wilkens, Hall of Famer. There's a ton of him on youtube talking about Larry. Find that stuff and listen! Bird was the real deal...and more.
Phil Jackson once said,,,"If I need 1 shot to win a game,,,I'll take Michael Jordan,,,if I need 1 shot to save my life,,,I want Larry Bird" ,,,thats all ya need to know
When you ask non NBA players about the top players they won’t mention Bird. When you ask the all time NBA greats who is in the top. They ALL mention Bird.
I love hearing the greats back in the day give Larry Legend so many compliments.. Dominique, Kareem, Magic, Barkley... I can't remember them all... but MJ never beat Larry on the court.. and Lebron has said how amazing Larry Legend was. Just look at his stats.. enough said.. he put it all out there played concussed, bleeding, bad back for years.
You guys want a link to a trash talk video?
His passing skills were awesome. There was a lot more street in the game back then.
As a young boy, Larry played with black men who worked at a hotel. I can only imagine how proud they must be of him😊
Bird is my all time favorite basketball player. Think about how skilled you have to be to tell the opposing players how you are going to score and from what spot on the court, and then to actually back it up...
And the ones he is doing it to as well! Not exactly no namers! xD

Nobody understands the game of basketball 🏀 better than Larry Bird… Coach of the Year… CEO of the year
Lets not forget, he won at every level of the NBA. championships as a Player, Coach, and GM. GOAT
Good point.
Much better than what Jordan did with Washington and Charlotte.
With Larry they never knew what he was going to do, so they fell down trying to figure it out lol. 😂
FWI: The Garden was sold out the night of Larry Legends retirement…and there was no game Scheduled that night.
That’s love right there.😎😁😘
Yes, it is.
Bird officially retired mid-August 1992, right after the Olympics.
The Retirement Ceremony in February 1993 was a way for Larry to thank the fans, as well as an opportunity for the fans and the Celtics organization to farewell Bird. Proceeds went to a number of charities.
Note that Larry legend won the first, second, and third three point contests in a row.

I am so glad to see a person recognized the talent that Larry Bird had. Offense and defense. His credentials are so good

Bird could shoot, pass or drive to the hoop. Defenders never knew where to go.
He also averaged 10 rebounds a game for his career

Larry Bird is what no fear on the court looks like
When Madic came out with his HIV diagnosis, Bird was the first player to call and ask if he needed anything.
Ppl don't understand how high his Bball IQ was. He's the GOAT according to a lot of the greatest legends...hence the moniker Larry Legend.
Now just watch his ultimate passing mix. 🐐
Depends I was in high school when Larry was running the league. Many Guys my age will say it’s Larry. Guys that didn’t see him play just can’t comprehend. Dude wanted to see who he played against. That era has more players in the top 75 than any other.
Cooper flagg about to be drafted 1.. from Duke . Wh😊at team get .
Bird retired in 1993 but played on the REAL Dream Team in 1992:
Laettner, Christian 22
Robinson, David 26
Ewing, Patrick 29
Bird, Larry 35
Pippen, Scottie 26
Jordan, Michael 29
Drexler, Clyde 30
Malone, Karl 28
Stockton, John 30
Mullin, Chris 28
Barkley, Charles 29
Johnson, Magic 32
Bro, is that a Donut beanie? If so, that's good sh*t 😂 That's worth a sub by itself.
yeah, your not to prejudiced young fella. 100 great clips of bird great plays, no reaction, 2 great plays by magic and its "ooo, ok magic " unreal
“Jordan made you look slow, Bird made you look stupid”- James Worthy
The night he retired there was no game played in the us in honor of him.
One of those guys "falling" was Dominique Wilkens, Hall of Famer. There's a ton of him on youtube talking about Larry. Find that stuff and listen! Bird was the real deal...and more.
All the top guys from his era said he was the best…..
Phil Jackson once said,,,"If I need 1 shot to win a game,,,I'll take Michael Jordan,,,if I need 1 shot to save my life,,,I want Larry Bird" ,,,thats all ya need to know
Larry be running saying let's all die 2 nite . He was sick .
Bird would be the best player in the NBA today.
The only opponent MJ NEVER BEAT.
3 rings and 3 mvs consecutively
Larry Bird is like a mix of Luka, Jason Kidd and Dirk
Who were his other opponents?
Kareem
Worthy
Lambeer
Isaiah
Dr J
Malone
Sampson
Hakeem
Bernard King
Rodman
Dominique
And Michael Jordan
No we all agree Jordan is #1
When you ask non NBA players about the top players they won’t mention Bird.
Any serious list always has Bird in the top 5 to 7 all time.
Best description of Bird is: part Nash, part Luka, part Joker, part Dirk…… only better
