@@GunFunZS That's because it had a worm gear steering system, instead of a rack and pinion, like modern cars. Worm gear steering gives greater mechanical advantage, which is why it was preferred in the days before power steering was universal on cars (and is still preferred on heavy duty trucks), but it doesn't give you the precise feel that rack and pinion does, and there's even a small "dead" space in the center. Watch someone driving one of those old cars, and you'll notice constant, minute course corrections they have to make to keep the car going straight, all thanks to that dead space.

I was issued the M45a1 and M9a1. Everyone in my unit exclusively used the M45a1 not because of tradition, but rather because it was leaps and bounds better than the M9 in every way except for capacity. Every single one of us scored significantly better with the 1911 on drills, so it was a no-brainer to carry them. I use compact glocks and M&Ps for my personal carry weapons, but in a combat role the full sized 1911 is still legitimately a great weapon choice.

The MEUSOC 45 was a custom built 45 built by USMC Precision Weapons in Quantico in the late 80s for 2nd Force Recon on the GI frames the rest of Marine Corps deadlined when they switched to Beretta 92F. The original MEUSOCs had Ithaca or Springfield slides. The USMC Pistol team sent their best couple armorers to service our pistols every few months and keep them match accurate. I shot hundreds of thousands of rounds in almost 8 years in 2nd Force Recon without issues in 3 different MEUSOC pistols. I carried one all over the Middle East and parts of Africa. They were unbelievably match accurate “rattle battle” guns that were used in wicked conditions and we inserted from the ocean often. They were durable and reliable. The M45 was made for DET 1 all Force Recon guys who would become MARSOC after being stood down and stood back up by Socom. Unlike civilians who like making shit up off of what they hear or read third hand we do not consider pistols to be an efficient weapon. They are a secondary weapon and although we master them things have really got to go to shit in a raid or CQB situation before we go to a pistol and usually in a weapons retention posture. We work fast hopefully supported by a teammate to get our primary back in fight and pistol back in holster. The 45 ACP round was desired over 9mm for obvious reasons. People will walk through 9mm rounds in cases where a 45 will put them down broken. If you can’t get the job done after transitioning to your secondary 45 with 7 Wilson combat mags of 45 to work with you suck. No one in the Force Recon I served in or the kids I’ve worked with today suck. The 45 is a deadly formidable weapon in their hands even today in a transition event. That’s 50 rounds of 45 ACP to deal with any in close gunfight situation and we muscle memory reloads under high stress continually. In fact the M45 is still carried by both MARSOC and Force Recon Units which contradicts your Statements. If you hate the 45 that’s your opinion but I don’t think you need to be speaking for us the operators who carried it and still carry it. It’s a man eater and if properly trained with and configured properly as fine as any combat handgun in circulation today.

Personally I love the 1911, it's one of my favorite handguns right up there with the various single action revolvers. But, would I pick a 1911 to take to war? Probably not as there are plenty of better choices. Would I insist others take them to war? Hell no.The 1911 is a great piece of history and it says a lot that it is still somewhat viable over a hundred years later. But it's only somewhat viable. There are countless better and more reliable handguns out there.

@Brian Ross It is very complex compared to more modern options. Complex is not good in a combat situation. For target shooting it does not matter. As a COMBAT pistol the 1911 is outdated. I love the 1911 but it is a old design that is far more complex than it needs to be

Brian Ross, it is not subjective preference to say a machine with more moving parts is “more complex” than a similar machine with fewer moving parts. It’s also not subjective preference to call it various forms of “old.” In the total history of automatic weaponry, it’s nearly prehistoric. To say otherwise is to dismiss all of the technological advances in the last 108 years as arbitrary “preferences.”
I love 1911’s as much as the next guy. I’m in the middle of sprucing mine up a bit. Just shot it with my son yesterday, with my 8-year-old daughter joining in. But I’m not so emotionally attached to it as to call it “modern” or “just as good as” everything new. If I ever “carry” it, it’ll be in a nice repro 1916 leather GI holster, for nostalgia.

The 1911 is outdated for military use. Just like the Mauser rifles are, but both are still outstanding weapons.

    • @cletustheslackjawedyokel6083
      @cletustheslackjawedyokel6083 5 років тому +3

Brian Ross a match grade M14 takes quite a bit if highly skilled labor to produce and excessive ongoing maintenance to stay that way. Contrast that with an AR15 or AR10 pattern rifle that a monkey can assemble from a pile of parts. And they will stay accurate until the barrel is shot out. You don’t have to skim bed them every few thousand rounds. If they get dirty you can fully strip them and not worry about damaging the bedding in the stock. You also don’t have the half assed scope mount screwed to the side of the receiver to worry about.
I think the M14 is a great rifle, partly because I really like the Garand. It just isn’t a great service rifle and it never should have been adopted by the military. It was obsolete before the first M14 was ever issued. Think about the fact that if the Generals would have left Garand alone we basically would have had something similar to a BM59 chambered in .276 Pederson for our standard rifle way back in 1937. By the late 1950’s the M14 was the wrong rifle in the wrong caliber.

    • @MildMisanthropeMaybeMassive
      @MildMisanthropeMaybeMassive 5 років тому +1

Brian Ross But it wasn’t designed as a DMR. It was designed as a standard service rifle and jumped on the assault rifle revolution without understanding it all while kowtowing to the demands of the old coots in the Ordnance Corps who hated innovation and evolution. The rest of the world was adopting the AK-47, FAL, G3, and EM-2 and the U.S. decided to adopt a magazine fed weaker M1 Garand with select fire then bullied NATO into following us.

The 1911 isn’t outdated enough. Military should adopt the 1851 Colt Walker. Slightly less capacity than a 1911 but real stopping power. For me, as someone who doesn’t go into combat, I love the 1911. I’ve found it very easy to shoot, and honestly I was a lot better with a 1911 than I was a Glock 22 or 23.
However, before I get roasted alive, were I going to war, I’d be using the H&K USP .45.
Though for my own personal use, the 1911 is thinner, more balanced, and for me easier to shoot.
I agree with a lot of what you said! The 1911 is my favorite pistol, but it’s not the best pistol in the world, especially not for modern military use. It needs more capacity.

But a SIG P226 TacOps with a 20-round extended magazine, E2 grip, threaded barrel and an optic-ready slide would be my go to metal frame, hammer fired handgun, that or the Beretta M9A3. But the CZ P-10 F with a 21-round extended magazine, threaded barrel and an optic-ready slide would be my go to polymer frame striker-fired handgun. While it's true that modern 9mm hp loads have become proven manstoppers, they still don't equal modern .45acp hp. And, with fmj military loads as mandated by the Geneva convention, there is no comparison.
The only thing the modern polymer guns have over the 1911 is capacity. Military handguns are SHTF backup guns, capacity only matters with rifles. They are no more reliable and not as accurate. I can put every round from a 1911 in a 3x5 card at 25 meters with zero malfunctions except bad ammunition, and I can usually do it at 50 meters. The only modern design that I can compare that with is my P226, which sucks with fmj.

Most parts on a 1911 have to be hand fitted. Done properly, a 1911 can be extremely reliable. For a civilian comfortable shooting a 45 and using a thumb safety (i.e. proper training and recurring practice), a modern “properly done” 1911 is perfectly fine for EDC.
The reason the parts require hand fitting is because early 20th century manufacturing tolerances were just that loose. That’s the same reason they are a poor candidate for mass production and distribution as a modern service sidearm - too much additional work needs to be done and/or parts need to be redesigned to tighter tolerances (leading to other issues). All of that is before we even take into consideration simplified training, more “idiot-proofing,” easier manual of arms, and military requirements for higher capacity magazines. You explained all of that very well and objectively.
I prefer single actions and my EDC is a 1911 (or variant), but I recognize others have different priorities for their EDC and the military (and LE) have very different requirements for a handgun.
Another example is the Colt Python. The Python is beautiful, reliable, and fine for civilian self defense, but every one was finished by skilled craftsmen who hand fitted parts for each gun. I wouldn’t suggest the military or a LE agency adopt them, even if possible.

However, all of the criticisms they gave to me were dismissed by many vets from WWII and Korea, which includes my late father who served in both wars, that were issued a weapon. Agree in almost everything in this vid except ........... I wonder how the 1911 had frame cracks ? . Shot them for 50 years and never heard of that (steel guns) . And something weird , I carry a Glock 30-S because its light but , I shoot slightly better with a 1911. I have found the same thing to be true with new shooters as well. They find the 1911 easier in accuracy dept than my Glock . I guess its because its heavier , and , of course , has a much better trigger.

No other weapon besides the browning 50 cal has been in service this long. I have 3 1911 pistols and never had a problem with them. The 1911 is very similar to our old ships.
    Were they great? Yes.
Were they the latest and greatest of their time? Yes.
Were they better than what our enemy had? Yes, for a while.
Is it time to move on? Yes.
I love a 1911 as much as the next guy. But if you asked me 1911 or USP45, that's a no brainer.
And if you asked Glock or USP, I'm going with a 9mm Glock.
Great video that sums up the 1911. It's served us well. It gave us the Browning action that damn near every handgun today is founded upon. A user that cut their teeth on a 1911 could essentially run anything out there. Is it a good carry option for civilians? Yes. Are there better options? Yes. It's been improved upon and it is a classic that will never be forgotten and I'd argue it will be made for at least another 50 years. Well done sir.

However if I were back on the job again I’d be carrying a USP .9 or USP .40. If service of high risk warrants were once again a part of my workload I’d be utilizing an HK USP.45 Elite or the FN .45 tactical. The only thing that would prevent me from using a Glock 21 is the ergonomics. The G-21 is an excellent duty weapon for those with larger hands.

As with all service pistol’s, nothing is the perfect weapon. I agree with your ‘dated’ summation of the 1911 design in modern military combat and it’s limited applications, but I’ve been to Jordan and the very competition you mentioned. There is no part of any of the pistol drills that a higher capacity pistol was the advantage. Solid hits on target was the order of the day for all its competitors in timed and structured scenarios. Decisive forward action drills, threat assessment & engagement was the paramount focus. Besides the physicality factor. To say, “that the Marines got their asses handed to them” is to infer that somehow because 9mm capacity ruled the day, makes me question if you were ever really there. I don’t recall any ‘pistol suppression drills’ in which any of the scenarios of the event consisted of any participants with an 8-10 round .45 acp magazine found themselves wishing they had 15-17 rnd 9mm magazine in its place. MARSOC or any Recon statured Marine Corps unit have a specific military functionary roles that differ from other US military specialists. The 1911 fits a niche in some of those roles. Besides, the 9mm has been part of the USMC’s MARSOC MTOE with the M9, M11’s & MP-5 SD’s since the 1990’s. To end on a positive, despite the cons going against the 1911 design, your correct on 93.45% of your other video’s & observations. Just my two cents worth. ✌️

Subscribed! When I was in the military we didn't have any other choices. There were no Glocks or other high capacity pistols that there are today. The old 1911 was the Cadillac of small arms back in those days and we were glad to have them. I do however know when a military weapon has seen it's better days on the battlefield and today there are so many different great handguns that are on the market to choose from. How the 1911 could still be considered a modern battlefield weapon is beyond me. I would have to choose the Sig or Glock over all other handguns today. I have quite a few old original military arms and even some older lever action rifles that are still just as functional as they were when they were in everyday use. If you were in the old west there would be nothing better than having a lever action Winchester or Marlin along with a six gun of the same caliber and I have two such pairs of weapons that still function and shoot as well as they did back in 1873 and 1887. Been shooting and hunting all my life. My first deer rifle was an M-1 carbine with a 20 round magazine. It is still being used today. Guns will outlast their owners and you can give them to your sons to hand them down to theirs. That is what my family does and will continue to do. Now that is tradition.

The GWOT has shown its ineffectiveness, which is exactly what Travis Haley said in his legendary takedown of the 1911.
And by takedown, he said the mission dictated which pistol he took. A straight assault he grabbed the 1911 every time. Long term out in the field he took a Glock 19. I say this as someone that owns neither handgun but has experience with both. If he knew there was a chance he would actually have to use a pistol in between mag changes, he grabbed the 1911. If he had to go out where there was no spare parts, he grabbed the G19.
As has been commented on elsewhere, the 1911 trigger is so good that it in fact does break the rule that you can't buy something to make you a better shooter, because that trigger will in fact do that. The way it points, the way it's balanced, you get into a rhythm with it that cannot be matched. It actually gives your ego a false impression of how good you are.
All that said, it's a finicky little high maintenace bitch of a pistol. It's more vulnerable to sand, mud, etc. It likes to eat it's own small parts. .45 ball is always going to be better than 9mm ball, but the US military is no longer issuing ball ammo for pistols because it sucks compared to commercially available hollowpoints, which 9mm make oogles of sense.
The 1911 still dominates pistol competition, or should I say the STI 2011, and that seems the best place for it. I do agree that buying these from Colt was basically corporate welfare and never should have happened.
All that said, I HATE the Glock grip, but have no intention of ever buying a 1911. I might make one someday as a CNC project, but I'll never buy one.

I can agree that the 1911 is kinda obsolete and that it isn’t really a gun for today but you can do modifications with it and make it double stack and if you don’t like 45 then change it to 9mm. I just don’t like the fact that he in a way says it’s god awful, it’s not and still in use just not like it was before. Glocks, m9s and all those other pistols being used are great and good pistol but if a person wants a 1911 to trust then don’t judge him that’s his decision alone and he trust’s it with his life literally and you can’t do anything to change that. Honestly I feel the same way. The 1911 feels great in my hands, and Glocks just don't do it for me. I'm also extremely accurate with 1911's, but not so much with Glocks. My brother let me shoot his Glock 43X, and my grouping was terrible at first. He told me a few tips on it and it did help tremendously for sure, but still. The 1911 reigns supreme for me. I understand it has drawbacks in modern times, but it's still my favorite gun. Maybe with time I could get used to a Glock, but the 1911 will always be my favorite. Plus, the 1911 is as American as baseball and apple pie. 😂

@@TexasHellcat1836 Yeah , those Glocks do tend to be pointed at the sky when you raise them into sight. 1911's just seem to point more natural.

I would pick the 1911 over the M9A1 without a doubt. The only draw back for the 1911 is the magazine capacity.

There are more. Better shot placement, reduced recoil, safer to carry loaded and M9 is more reliable. Vastly higher mean rounds between failures.

There's a reason why the CZ75 is the second most cloned handgun in the world! (Well and also because the Czech government didn't officially declassified the patents for the handgun on their end at their gov office, and so it didn't get the same patent protections that it should have gotten, because 'classified' patents in that country didn't get the same protections as ones that were publicly announced and made available, but still it's because it's a really great gun :p. There were tons of other handguns that people could have focused on cloning, but they CZ75 was just such a great advancement for such a reasonable price. They really got that thing down to a science.
I have a CZ 75 P-01 (no Omega trigger) and at first I really didn't like it, until I realized there was some dried up gunk in the area of the trigger mechanisms. And then since cleaning that out, it's been a really really excellent firearm. Zero malfunctions, super durable finish, really heavy but smooth trigger (can easily lighten it up for $30). I definitely prefer it to my M1911A1 Clone

We used 1911s in Force Recon for many years, pistols put together with parts from colt, Remington, Springfield Armory, put together by Marine armorers in Quantico ; they used match barrels Wilson combat sights, triggers, hammers, pachmyr grips and those pistols were Great, SEALS used to shoot Browning High Powers in 9mm, then they switched to the HK 45 acp, those pistols were as big as Dirty Harrys 44 mag, obviously they didn’t use them for to long,

and they all got my A## back to the world so I love my 45ACP

When you say “easier to shoot” around the 4:35 mark and referring to the Glock; I can’t help but wonder what you mean by that. I love the 1911. I have a few. Admittedly, I don’t carry one regularly given the limited ammo capacity. But ever since I decided I wasn’t going to carry one, I’ve been on the search for a handgun that gives me the same confidence in accuracy. I shoot a lot. Every Sunday with a group of guys. At the end of training we go back to 100 meters and shoot at a half size silhouette. With one of my 1911’s I can hit it almost every time, and with some pretty decent speed. I’ve purchased two Glocks, one m&p and one CZ in my quest for a new platform. The CZ (p-09) is the only one that comes close. I’m guessing because it’s also hammer fired. So that’s what I carry now. Striker fired triggers suck. Even aftermarket triggers pale in comparison. So, “easier to shoot” I think should include “accurately”. And in that case, I would strongly disagree. Now if I could only pull the trigger on a 2011. However, the grips just don’t feel the same. Until then I’ll be carrying the p-09 and in the back of my mind wondering if I should have just stuck to the 1911.
Historically we’re told for self defense we’ll likely be fighting inside of 7 yards. But in the day of active shooters; I’d really like to have a handgun I’m comfortable at ranges with, say in a shopping mall parking lot.
Yes, I want my cake and I want to eat it too!

The 1911 is no longer a viable military sidearm I will give you that. But I still like them and for CCW, home defense, and general fun I still think they are hard to beat (for me I shoot them very well)

I think ammo has come so far in the 9mm. The military can't take advantage of the leaps and bounds ammo makers have made in hollow point ammunition and that's a shame, but I can so the decision as to carry a 9mm or 45 acp is made much easier for me. So, I carry a .357 SIG.

I'm a 1911 guy but I also realize that yes there are better platforms out there for our men and women to carry. I'm not carrying one any longer as a combat Marine but for personal protection and target shooting. The 1911 suites my philosophy of use but if I was to got back into combat I'd probably prefer the HK USP 45 for my sidearm.

I understand that I am way late to this party, but I think a good analogy is M14 and M4. The 1911 is the hand gun equivalent of the M14 and HK and Beretta and the equivalent of the M4. I think most agree that the M4 is a better combat rifle in 90% of situations.

Very fair, thorough and accurate analysis. You are 100% right in my opinion. I am a 1911 guy, and a Colt Single Action guy and a Smith & Wesson revolver guy. For CIVILIAN self defense use, or concealed carry, nothing wrong with a 1911, a Colt Single Action, or a S&W Model 10. Hell I've even carried Uberti replica Cap&Ball replica Colt 1851 .36's & 1860 .44's and Remington Army .44's. ALL, properly loaded will effectively handle practically any civilian self defense situation. ( Yes, IF I personally load the C&B revolvers, the guns are every bit as reliable and effective as any modern weapon. BUT I have slicked and cleaned the replica actions, replaced the nipples, etc, to equal original Colts/Remingtons, and are far above out-of-the-box quality). When the capacity issue is raised on the C&B revolvers, saying , "Just carry two like Hickok did" always gets a laugh, but no one ever argues against the solution. For MILITARY use, all of these handguns had their day, but are now outdated, no question. For civilian use, all are still useable and effective, although more modern options are available. With proper tactics, NO weapon is ever obsolete. I guarantee that a loaded and capped Colt 1860 .44, cocked and pointing 6 one-half ounce conical bullets directly at you, will NOT look obsolete.

U are 100 percent correct. As a Wilson combat 1911 carrier and lover of the platform I realize that we must keep up with the times. I'm not gonna bash, but I still can't believe that the choice of the Sig p320 over the glock was not cost. Motivated. I know Sig makes a fine gun, but that choice was not one of those best. Thanks for the informative vidios.

I've owned 2 .45 caliber pistols in my life. A Kimber 1911 and a S&W M&P .45. The M&P is one of the best shooting guns I've ever owned. I sold the 1911. I understand why people like 1911's but not for combat and not for CCW. Too heavy and too few rounds.

  • @CountSpartula

If we want to keep the 1911, needs two changes made to it, and both are related to eachother.
1: Safety and usability features that are considered standard nowadays.
2: The caliber it chambers must be practical in a double stack, high capacity magazine of at least 12 rounds. Likely 9mm but the USP has shown that you can have 12 shots of .45 ACP.
Personally, i love the 1911 and i think its more than just mere nostalgia that has kept it going for so long, but honestly we ought to adopt something else. My vote? Just adopt the USP .45. You keep the .45 ACP, but also gain a 12 round magazine over the 7 rounds of the 1911 and M45A1. Its a perfect compromise between tradition and practicality.

  • @savirien4266
    @savirien4266 6 років тому +6

The 9mm would be superior in a military setting if soldiers were allowed to carry hollow point ammunition; however, when hobbled with full metal jacket type ammo in use for anti-personnel, the 45ACP is superior as a "man stopper." I believe that to be the real reason for adopting this pistol. Although many people would have liked to see a more modern design be implemented than the 1911 style of handgun.

There are plenty of high capacity 1911's on the market. I love the 1911 and I can dump mags pretty fast. I carry a 45ACP because they don't make a 50. The 1911 is made to be carried cocked and locked and that is the safest way to carry it. That is why it has a grip safety. I have a 1911 made in 1916 with all it's original parts in it and it still shoots just fine.

Are you referring to the 2011 type of 1911's? They are typically polymer framed competition guns and when properly and consistently maintained a great competition gun but dont properly and consistantly it and its a jam-o-matic
