- This Subaru DiY video is the first in a multi-part series about COOLANT FLOW through Subaru EJ-SERIES engines and why you may want to consider purchasing a ‘REVERSE COOLING MOD’ (aka 'COOLANT BALANCE') kit for your Subaru.
This series took a significant amount of effort to create and I think it’s one of the most comprehensive dives into Subaru cooling and the achilles-heal of Subaru EJ-series engines - the NUMBER FOUR CYLINDER! I hope this deep dive into coolant flow through EJ-series engine become a valuable resource for Subaru enthusiasts all over the World!
This video is part of a "Build Series" (see "Playlists" tab for all videos) for my 1998 Rally Blue Pearl RSTi Coupe (Impreza 2.5RS swapped with a EJ205 turbo engine), which is 1 of only 720 sold in the USDM for 1998. This RSTi Build has come a long way and includes a full archive of videos documenting how to: (1) Pull a EJ-series turbo engine, (2) Replace the head gaskets, (3) Add key upgrades to increase long-term reliability, and (4) Restore the interior to OEM specifications.

Awesome video. I have been reading through my factory service manual like a text book and havent come across the exact route the coolant or oil takes. Just one of the things I do on my free time to truly know and appreciate my car. And given nothing is wrong with my 14' wrx engine I have not had the opportunity to trace its path myself. With that said, the content of this video is perfect and very much appreciated. Gives a new perspective of engine mechanics other than just reading from a service manual.
I would have to agree with another comment that sometimes it is difficult to hear you; however, I understand that is a result of lack of audio equipment. Regardless, your time and dedication to these videos is not overlooked.

Great video cant wait for the final video but maybe for another video idea can u explain the differences and hp in the different blocks that iag or other shops do regarding the close deck block and the darton sleeves block. Like are they just for racing or can I daily drive any of them, or any future problems with the design?

I just used a Harbor Freight one. But modified the wheels (made a video on it too, it’s somewhere in my list from a coupe years ago)! Cheers buddy!!

Is this mod compatible for all ej heads or usdm specific?
Not sure about all ej heads. I’m pretty sure the JDM twin turbo motors all basically use this mod for the second turbo - so it’s not totally revisionary concept.
It's inexcusable that subaru never fixes any of their flayed engineering.

Your videos are great but might I suggest you install a mic on you for the parts when you're away from the camera because the sound is much lower than when you're explaining things on the whiteboard. Keep the good work!

Would you say this is a good mod (cooling mod) for a brand new STI that’s going to be used as a daly? Or is this more for someone that is tracking their car..?

I got unusual issues with my leggy. When the temp drops down to the teens, the starter doesn't want to engage. Warm it up to 20 and she'll start. That's the first. 2nd issue is thus, had an overheat issue. The gauge said pegged. The radiator and hoses called the gauge a liar. I had a little bit of coolant on the drivers side bank with no water pooling underneath the car. Radiator cap was cold.
Added water, wouldn't take more than a pint. Didn't run hot after that. Any clues as to what's going on? I'm a former mechanic and I don't understand these things. The starter not a real big issue, probably a solenoid hanging up when really cold. But the cooling issue baffles me currently. She hasn't acted up since. Any ideas or has someone run across these issues before? Clue- she had been driven 25 miles when the cooling issue occurred. Didn't overheat going back that 25 miles.
Cheers buddy! I’ll give these my best shot. 1. The starter issue, could be the solenoid hanging up when cold (as you suggest) or could also be a loose wire (positive or ground), which is something that is actually pretty common too. 2. For the overheating issue, this may be a bit more complex. If there’s any coolant escaping the system, than there’s no pressure holding either and that’s a problem, also it’s pretty easy for a hot pocket of coolant to develop due to an air pocket (which can easily happen if there’s even a slight leak anywhere in the system), so I think all these issues may be related. I’d located where the system is leaking (even if very minor), fix that, top off the coolant, and keep a close eye on everything. Hope this helps, good luck!

Hello MrSubaru, I’m looking to purchase this mod. Should I go with the vemstuning or getadom? The vemstuning mod looks higher quality.
SoEpix Dominic from getadomtune is the guy who originally designed and engineered the cylinder 4 cooling mod. Other sellers copied him. If you were to buy this I’d recommend going to his website and ordering from him.
Also look up OCTurbojoe. He’s a jet mechanic and has a great review and install on the getadomtune cyl cooling mod.
I’d definitely get doms. I just installed it n it’s working great so far. The temps do seem lower
