One of my favorite things to take from this video is watching these guys admit they were anxious, scared, perhaps jittery, but push forward for their very best performance. That’s what’s it’s about.
As much as I admire these guys' riding skills after watching them for a few years, I'm always impressed by Ari's mechanic chops. Most guys I know who ride, never turn a wrench- just pay someone else to do it.
I was going to say that one of my favorite moments from the video was watching him diagnose the problem, then also wipe down the socket before putting it back in his personal toolbox they took with them. It didn’t matter that it was super late, in a parking lot. He did it right.
Ari is a motorcycling god. I do most of the servicing on the trackbike myself. The only thing i won't touch is the engine (it will change some day). Keen to service the forks soon :)
The 2005/6 GSXR 1000 was renowned for particularly strong mid range torque. Modern day Sportsbikes have sacrificed some of that mid range torque to run higher revs and subsequently higher potential BHP figures. This means that theoretically newer Sports bikes can have a potentially higher top end but in some cases can take longer to get there/ use that advantage. You may find that the mid range torque (ofDave) is part of the reason why the GSXR 1000 K5/6 beat the Panigale times on the track.
Exactly. It also depends on the track. If the track has a lot of slow/mid speed corners, the mid-range power will pull you out of those corner quicker. If a track has more high speed corners or long straights, the top end power will assist you. The Panigale can't use its power as effectively compared to the GSXR.
@@paulyCi agree! The track plays a huge part. I think if the panigale would be set up correctly, it can be quicker on this track as well, but in the end there is more to consider than just two bikes at its own.
Euro 5 has entered the chat. The k5 is a lot more free breathing. To get a good match, you'd have to do an aftermarket exhaust and tune. And even then the Catcon is much more restrictive on modern bikes. Also a lot of modern bikes have perma traction control on even with the setting turned off. It's kind of not a fair comparison. But both are great bikes for the purpose of going fast.
Nothing better than waking up on Saturday morning, having a cup of coffee and watching a nice Revzilla video. Love Zack and Ari together! Great vid guys!
The 2005 (2006) Suzuki GSXR1000 is an absolute LEGEND bike! So much so, that BMW used it to develop their own S1000RR. The legendary K5 / K6 is truly something special.
They did, they bought 20 secondhand k5s to develop the S1000RR. Also said that the K5 was best 1000cc sports bike ever built. S1000RR feels JUST like a K5 when riding it.

The K5/K6 1000 was so awesome for its mid-range drive and all round chassis, ive had 3 of them, amazing bikes, especially in the era when they was released.
RIP to those that bought a $30K bike to keep up with a K5 2005 GSXR. I’ve never been convinced of ever spending that kind of money on a motorcycle. It’s the rider and properly setup bike that makes it fast, not just the specs.
@@mountainbikerdave I still don't get how that changes anything, Marquez wouldn't lap as fast on a yamaha neither would Rossi on a Honda. Even they make a dozen laps or so
I'd like to see how the Ducati fairs against my KLR 650. I just installed some Galfer SS brake lines which I believe is going to give me a slight edge.
I own a k5 gixxer race bike that I run regularly, I’ve been to this track plenty and even have a race there in august. What I can say for this comparison is that the track had a huge part in it. Having lots of horsepower on tap at Buttonwillow won’t get you very far. I can only go full throttle in a few areas and they aren’t really the key areas. I can usually hang with V4’s and R1M’s at that track. As a matter of fact I ran a full second faster on my 08 R6 than on my k5. At tracks like willow springs the k5 does well but can’t hold its own in the straights. I can brake late and enter corners as fast or faster than most modern bikes. I love my k5 but I can tell you how frustrating it is to out-ride your competition and have 1st in the bag only to end up with 2nd because you get smoked in the drag race to the finish line. I love the looks and sound of the Ducati but everyone I know that owns one spends more time messing with it then they do riding it. If you guys ever take that k5 out on track again try a 200/60 rear tire. The extra height of the 60 makes the bike turn so much nicer than the 55.
Greetings, just watched and enjoyed the video. Kudos to Evan, perhaps the most knowledgeable person commenting here. Having owned 2 ninjas , a zx7 from 1995 and zx6r 636 from 03, the particular racetrack used makes a huge difference. My home track is road America, and if you enjoy going really fast this is the track to be on. One lap is just a hair over 4 miles, and there is a total of 3 long straightaways. This would slightly probably favor the Ducati , with it's over 200 b.h.p. So, any SLIGHT advantage the gixer would have in cornering and braking, the Duc would compensate on the straights. But still, I was a bit surprised of the outcome, I wonder what would have happened if they would have thrown a 2010 zx10r in the mix. Thanks to all for sharing, and if you ride be safe. Cheers!!!!
Had a K6 and an '11 busa (w K7 gsxr tail kit and race tech gold suspension) and I commute only, I have a 200/60 on my Busa now and it makes the mid corner stuff insane for the big 1340 bike. I dont track but I do miss the $old K6 for its rowdy top end and ride/balance, but i dont miss the lack of torque in traffic lol. I loved switching between the Busa and the K6 commuting to appreciate what both have to offer. I ended up sticking w Busa w suspension work/quick throttle tube/regear w 200/60 and gsxr tail kit, ecu flashed w Brocks full system, transforms whole vibe of it. K5/6 bikes were the lightest litre bikes from suzuki ever, last years of the catless no smog stuff + full Ti header from factory plus the thin/small frames. Id say a set of Carbon Wheels would really transform the K5. BMW benchmarked only the K5/6 for its 1st ever S1000rr - thats enough proof how good the bikes are.
Hard to believe it won't hold its own on the straights, get a flash from Chris moore, 195mph ,I have stacks ,full exhaust, sprint filter, block offs, very fast plenty of top end I own a k6

Great win for the old tech! You forgot to talk about the cost of maintenance, a major service on the V4 would be equivalent to buying another K5. And good luck fixing anything engine related on a V4 in a parking lot.
I used to work for Motocorsa, I rode a clapped out GSXR and intentionally paid the price that most of our wealthy clients paid for a tune up for my whole bike. They would give me crap about not being able to polish a turd, yet I could easily ride at their pace without even trying hard. So I"m right there with you.
As a cheap bastard, I LOVE this video. Not mentioned in the video is also the fun factor, and I find I have way more fun and get much more use from an inexpensive used item. Spend too much = too much babying and worrying about lost value. This video is a great demo on how to enjoy life more 👏
Problem with this super high end bikes is that only top 1 percent of rider can ride them fast make no mistake the v4 is a fast beast its alot faster technically then the gixer ducati test rider Alessandro valia rode it in valancia with slick and a dre exhuast kit and clock 1:36.84 wsbk bike does around 1:33 and motogp 1:30 so no a gixer is not faster then a v4 far from it but the ducati is hard to ride its power is imense and only the best rider can make use of it there a reason why reasonably skilled rider are riding old fireblade and raping the daylight of uber race machine like ducati and bmw
My K5 Gixxer is a beast and blows pretty much everything away. It’s to this day still my favorite bike and I’ve ridden almost everything new and old. It still provides the terrifying pucker factor that we all desire in our sport bikes.

revzilla: "hey can we have a system check about your bike?" ducati: "sure. whats the problem?" revzilla: "oh nothing it just it got beaten by a 15 years old gsxr 1000" ducati: 😧😦😮😯😱😱
I'm not big on old is better than new, but was really happy to see the gsxr that was purchased for 3k and had another 2-3k put into it give the Ducati a black eye.
This goes to show how impeccably engineered the Japanese Suzuki was in its day. And look at the mileage on that engine! It's fantastic that it's running so strongly still. I wonder if the Italian Ducati would still be running at that mileage. 🤔
Recently I was thinking about trading my Yamaha MT07 for a Ducati Supersport S. I'm more into nakeds, but I'd like to try something different. I called the best shop in my state and talked to the mechanic to see what he had to say about it. I ride between 800 to 1200 miles per month (highway, trips, city, etc.), my Yamaha is getting up there in the mileage department, but NEVER gave any issue. The mechanic immediately said that was a very bad ideia. He said the Ducati could not handle being used as a "normal bike" like I do with my Yamaha. He told me the amount of different Ducatis they have to fix on a daily basis due to the most absurd problems are insane, so there was a very good chance I could have lots of different issues that would leave me stranded. He told me: "If you want to try something new, just choose another Japanese brand, but leave european brands behind. Try a Z1000 or the new GSXS1000." So that's it... I'd still like to try a Ducati someday, but seems I need to have another bike on the garage to use when the italian certainly breaks down.
55k milage is pretty low. In asian countries we used motorcycles alot. 55k is like beginner numbers. Most 150cc bike and 200cc chinese bike had 140k miles and running. And our zx10 most of them were gen 4 had 80k 90k mileage.
If they did a superbike shootout, I will never doubt the results most people just accepts it and go home, they on the other hand... do a research on why! AWESOME!
This was by far the best motorcycle video that I’ve watched in recent memory. Excellent content guys. Loved every minute of it. Reminded me a lot of old Top Gear episodes. Please make more content like this!
You don't need 200hp. It's overkill and not enough traction. All you need is 160hp, traction, and good frame/chassis design. Suzuki obviously got the design right from winning AMA championships since the 90's.
As a lifelong basher of Suzuki, I have to say that this truly changed my mind about at least the 05 1000. Obviously that bike is super well sorted, not just for it's time, but PERIOD. Alongside the CBR from that era, you have to give the nod to the engineers of the early 2000's superbikes. They cracked a code that apparently you really can't improve on with some electronic fiddly-doo settings. Good old fashioned proper hardware is the ultimate equalizer and sub $5000 bikes beating $28k bikes is a big TSK TSK to the motorcycle manufacturers of the world.
Suzuki makes good price per performance bikes. They are reliable and sturdy, Hondas are more expensive but built to a higher quality standard even when its not needed. Life is too short to be a fan of one manufacturer. Ride them all and then decide whats the best bike. Always be open minded.
@The Power Moves True but at the same time I am sure they are extremely fine tuned to the track they race. And that kind of art of work is not 28k$ my friend. Probably at least double the price
@@delusion2987 maybe strange too say, but I've owned once a 2005 RMZ450 and it was the most powerfull RMZ of all times. The 2006/2007 and on just didn't felt so powerfull and weren't. Scary 450 single bike.
When the 1199 Panigale was first released, I was so excited to test ride it, 5 minutes later I couldn't bare the heat, it was killing me. It took 3 sets of lights for my nuts to start roasting.. I returned the bike back to the dealer and told him it was ridiculously hot to ride. I remember that it felt like magic to jump back on my 07 Fireblade.
I raced the K5 and loved it! I worked at a motorcycle shop a couple of years ago and rode all liter bikes of the year and NOTHING felt close. I don’t know how I had the best bikes in my life. The K5 is a history Marker and i also had the 2008 CRF-450F which is known to be the monster of its class. I also raced the SV-650 when it came out in ‘99. Life is good! Keep up the great work!
Agreed...loved the flashback. It made me realize that maybe, just maybe my 2006 CBR1000RR isn't so bad after all these years. As Ari's said it best, "unadulterated". There is just something about that pure riding experience, power without all the gadgets that come on new bikes these days. It's like dumbing down the skills required to actually ride these beasts. I am sure they are great, but if I don't know what I am missing then I will just keep on my "classic" sportbikes...thank you. Maybe I am old school, but I prefer to keep my skills up and earn the ride rather than let technology take that work away.

I'm 55 years old. Childhood dream was to own a 1000cc bike. I was riding a XR 200 Enduro at 18, then a tzr 125 on the road. My first 4 cylinder was a CBR 600. Then i bought the (for me it was a) Beast ! Suzuki SV1000s ! Hydraulic clutch and loads of torque grunt ! All the big 4s left me for dead on the autobahn as it only did 140mph but it was how it got there which was so satisfying ! You take your time and be careful! The streets are not race tracks !!! I knew an 18 year old who passed his test and within a month he was dead. Its worth crashing on a dirt bike to learn respect and to feel the energy involved when you lose control ! Now get out there and live your dreams man ! P.s. in the end i managed to crash all of my bikes and am lucky to be alive !
Out of all your content, this is my most favoritest episode. Though I have never owned, or even really liked Suzuki motorcycles a whole lot, the K5 1000 has been burned into my memory as the best, along with the GSX-R750 of that generation. I was just an impressionable teenager reading Cycle World magazines when these came out, but even as a Honda/Yamaha fanboy, the K5 1000 is very near the top of my list of bikes to own.
I can’t think of anything that would make watching Zack and Ari more entertaining. These two dudes are so honest and likable. Well maybe if the got Keanu Reeves to guest. Also I have a “Dave” myself, got it from a stranger online for the same price... only difference is that it was in great condition! Seriously the performance bargain of the century. Years later still running strong with minimal upkeep!
This is one of the best video I've ever seen. And I watch lot's of them. We live in the worst era the motorcycle industry has ever seen. Lot's of useless electronic (apart from ABS), lot's of power that only a pro rider can use and prices that are to the roof. All of this it's taking the real riding experience away leaving us with nothing. I owned few bikes in my life and interestingly enough the one that I currently own, a Ninja 400 prep for track days, is the one I'm enjoying the most. Keep it simple.
I salute you sir...great summary. Ps I miss my old vfr nc30 400....revving gears out to a v4 soundtrack on something that In hindsight was so light!!!👌🏻
Wrong/poor/crap/ suspension with a lot of power, is still just as slow as wrong/poor/crap/ suspension with even more power. It's the dark area of motorcyclists' experience: suspension setup and proper use of brakes. I think riders know more about the chemical composition of a cup of coffee than they do about suspension function.
I have a 2k5 450 RMZ. It´s no slouch and can hold it´s own really well. My number one bike is a 350 KTM from 2021, but I still take the Suzuki out every now and then just for fun.
I've owned my fair share of bikes over the past 35 years and I can honestly say the only bike I completely regret selling was my 2005 Gixxer 1000. I'm now on a GSX-S 1000F which has a homologation of the K5 and am enjoying it. I especially enjoy having ABS and traction control. But to this day, the best bike I've ever owned was my K5 1000. Great video guys as always!
The GSX-S is my first suzuki and first proper liter bike, so I can't comment on the GSXR of old, but I love that there is so much fan fare over this motor. It's really the best I've ever had for cruising, commuting, or going fast. The motor has so much range with there being torque EVERYWHERE. The ECU flash really woke it up too.
I absolutely love these videos. There is clearly not any sponsored content here, because if this video was sponsored it would have simply ended with fake lap times saying the ducati was faster and everyone would've believed it. Thank you for your honesty and bravery.
I've been seeing a lot of folks jump from their Ducatis for higher performance rides. Today on the XSR forums I read about a guy that jumped off of his monster 12 for an xsr900 and it made my heart sing.
I got lost on UA-cam and ended up here, I know nothing about superbikes, and enjoyed every single second of this video !!! This battle was super interesting !
The mental aspect of racing plays a large part of the lap time. Racing with a recently healed bad injury, personal issues, in this case binning a 30k bike vs binning a 3k bike perhaps.
I'd argue that they had no qualms about binning the 30k bike since it was likely company property, I think the real issues are the electronic nannies that hampered the panigale's performance its funny, prior to this video I had always considered the panigale v4 to be a dream bike. Now, I'm reconsidering...
@@CarsMeetsBikes True in that they wouldn't personally be out of pocket but they'd get a second thought from Ducati when asking to borrow another bike in the future. Plus everyone into bikes more than 10yrs was pulling for the underdog Suzuki. That's good for a few tenth in itself.

Vintage UA-cam was spot on. And even Barry's clipping voice audio for that authentic mid-2000s action sports video feel. Takes me back to the good ole days, I tell ya.
This pulls back the curtain on the hype we unnecessarily pay for. I put this video up there with the one you did on breaking in a new mc engine. Well done!
So many gems in Barry Henning’s 2005 UA-cam video. The music, the shaky camera, the misspelling of “chasey”, and finally the unnecessarily counter leaning through a corner while thinking he looks cool. It’s all very 2005.

Hey Duc dealer, I got gapped by a K5 GSXR on my V4. I need a diag for why my feelings got hurt so much.
The panigale is a 1100cc v4 big bang engine, it has a lot of torque even from lower rpm.

The Duc has nothing on the KLR, if the race were on a dirt track...
If it were a race to keep running till the heat death of the universe, you may have the best bike for the job.

Reminds me of how the Fireblade is always the slowest on paper yet people seem to lap faster on it because it is so well balanced.

Try a Z1000 or the new GSXS1000."
So that's it...

P.s. in the end i managed to crash all of my bikes and am lucky to be alive !
Man. Hope one day you get one.
I'm 61 now. Started on dirtbikes at 16, owned just about every xr and cr and still have an xr650L. Sportbikes? Busa. I like comfort.
I can only imagine the Ducati dealership scene... 🤣
So the k5 is faster than the panigale ??? Its time for the squid to shine ...
The K5 remains A legend.
Why they left MC? Glad rev signed them. They're like that creditcard ad, priceless!
They're the reason I followed MC's channel in the first place
Even tho watching this for the 2nd time, I'm still hype and wanting to see another super bike challenge against the Legend of the K5!
I can’t think of anything that would make watching Zack and Ari more entertaining. These two dudes are so honest and likable. Well maybe if the got Keanu Reeves to guest. But seriously, the quality of content and video got so much better and natural since they left a certain automotive conglomerate which we shall refuse to name.
Must check out “TheStraightPipes” those are the zack and Ari of car reviews, really good!
I got one 05 k5 I have it for the past 4 years.
Till today the smile and happiness after every ride is something can’t be explained
My favorite things:
The 2000s gixxer bro intro
Meat thermometer
Zack's trackday suit (so nice)
Chasing down the reasons why Gixxer was faster than Duc (though trackday guys know, the clapped out Gixxers are always faster than the shiny Ducs)
This was such a brilliant episode. Definitely changed my perception for needing the newest of bikes. Do a crossover with Ryan F9 next!!
Brilliant idea
Agreed, just picked up a 2003 Kawasaki z1000, 10k miles
@@dmoney3491 I’m tryna buy a fireblade or an r1 , 2004 models
When I get to watch Zack and Ari shred together, everything in the world is ok. Thank you for the great episode, gents.
I just want to say this is my favorite video of yours, and I watched it three times. Thank you for this content, I really love it. Also I have a “Dave” myself, got it from a stranger online for the same price... only difference is that it was in great condition! Seriously the performance bargain of the century. Years later still running strong with minimal upkeep!
Top of the notch advertisement for suzuki😂
Tbh. Yes.
Man it's so good to see you both together. Motorcyclist magazine gang wya
I'm starting to think of one for my next bike. Currently on a striple, but for track days I'm really considering a ninja 400 or R3.
Yes, adding 50% to the price for a few mod cons compared to the previous model is a total scam.
I think riders know more about the chemical composition of a cup of coffee than they do about suspension function.
get a job hobo

Jared Rich guys really like the Italian bikes, but most racers know Suzuki is the working mans favorite.
Do you think that would have anything to do with being 25 and maybe your first super bike (idk if it was)?
I still have my K6 model. Just clicked 49k on the odo and still a rocket.
I have GSX-R 1000 K6 and that has been my best purchase so far :)
I absolutely love these videos. There is clearly not any sponsored content here, because if this video was sponsored it would have simply ended with fake lap times saying the ducati was faster and everyone would've believed it. Thank you for your honesty and bravery.
That's absolutely crazy. Hard to justify the Ducati's price when it's getting schooled by the GSX-R
The Ducati makes for better social media picture poses though. That's the important thing.....
I've been seeing a lot of folks jump from their Ducatis for higher performance rides. Today on the XSR forums I read about a guy that jumped off of his monster 12 for an xsr900 and it made my heart sing.
Looks.
Rider schooled. Not the bike.
@@daytonasayswhat9333 um no, they both did laps with both bikes. The bike was schooled. They did a ten minute recap on why.
I'm so glad these two are back together, I used to love the old On Two Wheels episodes!
The Ducati PR rep is in deep crap over this one 😂😂
Seriously, whoever loaned them that v4 is getting fired HARD.
@@christianhodges685 yeah bro. Spring or no spring, this is not good PR 😂😂
Ducati and ferrari are a known asshole to its customer
The previous owner definitely wants that gsxr back
Well, thatˋs the reason suzuki doesnˋt change much at the gsxr, itˋs already good as it is
I got lost on UA-cam and ended up here, I know nothing about superbikes, and enjoyed every single second of this video !!! This battle was super interesting !
The mental aspect of racing plays a large part of the lap time. Racing with a recently healed bad injury, personal issues, in this case binning a 30k bike vs binning a 3k bike perhaps.
Unless you have very deep pockets. There is no way I could track that bike and wad it up!
I'd argue that they had no qualms about binning the 30k bike since it was likely company property, I think the real issues are the electronic nannies that hampered the panigale's performance
its funny, prior to this video I had always considered the panigale v4 to be a dream bike.
I don't know...when you put the personal man hours into getting a tired bike completely back up to snuff, wrecking it is heartbreaking.
@@steve23464 I think Ducati would rather have them trash the bike than have the current result, lol. It's costs 9x more, but is more than a second slower, and harder to ride? That's the worst kind of press.
I freaking love that you guys are still doing this content, with RevZilla this time. Keep up the great work!
To be honest, I could not care less about sport bikes, however when Zach and Ari are presenting something together I will watch it.
If you're a biker and you've never ridden a sport bike,you haven't lived.
@@Adrenalean767 I rode an RC8 1190. I wasn't impressed.

Brilliant. Street real content, compelling, exciting, surprising- and best of all it shows us that we can be proud of the steel we can afford.
I watch motorcycle videos every day and although I am not a racer (heck I am not even fast) this was one of the most entertaining 25 minutes I have yet enjoyed.
Awesome.
Vintage UA-cam was spot on. And even Barry's clipping voice audio for that authentic mid-2000s action sports video feel. Takes me back to the good ole days, I tell ya.
anybody realize the background music is absolutely spot on.. really adds to the excitement..
This pulls back the curtain on the hype we unnecessarily pay for.
I put this video up there with the one you did on breaking in a new mc engine.
Well done!
Which video is that? In which channel? Thank you!

@@ThrottleJunkie31415 thanks!!!
@Bernd DasBrot lol
So many gems in Barry Henning’s 2005 UA-cam video. The music, the shaky camera, the misspelling of “chasey”, and finally the unnecessarily counter leaning through a corner while thinking he looks cool. It’s all very 2005.
This was brilliant lads! Did not expect that result! The K5 legend grows! 😆🤘 Both sounded incredible too
My K5 didn’t ever have any of these issues. It’s been a champ since I’ve had it! Anyways this definitely makes me love it even more!
Because you take good care of it.
People over here complain that the frame snaps...no shit it does when you wheelie and slam it down every day...
Yep all about the maintenance. Mine never missed a beat, I miss it every day
Keep it safe brother
What did I just watch? 😯
PS: I'm going to download this video just incase Ducati made a lawsuit on this and they took it down.
