FIXING EVAP Code On A Chevy Silverado For FREE *NASTY Brake Fluid Bonus*

  • Gabe is bringing the heat with the projects. Today we're troubleshooting an intermittent check engine light on a cateye Chevy Silverado. The code is P0446, it sets the check engine light and is more of an annoyance than a problem. We're going to jump in, test the system, and hopefully with a bit of testing and cleaning the light will stay off permanently. Then we replaced all of the brake fluid that looks like it's been in this truck since it rolled off the assembly line in 2003.

What motorcycle do I ride? A few. Ducati 1198, Honda Goldwing, Honda Grom, Honda Ruckus
What do I do for a living? Make UA-cam videos.
Can you wheelie? No, I suck.
Are you fast? Sort of. I suck mostly though.
Where can I keep up with you off the bike?

Do you go to the track? Of course, hopefully there will be videos in the future.
Do you play video games? No, but I might stream N64 Goldeneye at some point. Twitch: WatchJRGo
Are you afraid the police will watch your videos and arrest you? Something something evidence something something warrants and due process of law

I had an evap code and turns out rodents had chewed on a vent or return line enough to have a small leak. Seems to be more common now with lockdowns and people parking more often and longer.

Surprising people complain to you about working on your friends' rigs. Half the fun of watching your builds is the crew who helps you breathe new life into these older cars. The fact that you can turn around and help them makes me want to watch you far more. To me, HOW you do your builds is more important than WHAT you build. Keep up the amazing work.

No need for an explanation. Putting homies and friends ahead of your own projects just goes to show that you’re a good guy. Plus these little maintenance video are probably more relatable and helpful to everyone. Not like everyone is sitting around with broken axles on their atoms waiting for a step by step video to show them how to fix it lol. Keep it up.

I don't care who's car you are wrenching on, because you have always had the crew fixing on stuff. Josh, Gabe, and your family are great, your dad is great, reminds me of you, and how detail oriented you both are, wanting everything perfect. You are building this shop for youtube content, and having people coming over and doing different thing's. God bless, and keep on a rolling out the rigs.

Your scan tool is showing you that the vent is blocked or not opening due to a stuck vent valve or a blocked up charcoal canister. The code means it is pulling more than 2.5kPa vacuum in the tank during purge. This will usually also make it difficult to fill the fuel tank. If you use the "purge and seal" test in the Autel, that closes the vent valve and opens the purge valve at the same time. The test you did was just to open the purge valve, the vent valve is normally open. The tank pressure sensor showing a vacuum means that the vent is mechanically restricted. The check engine light will not come back on until the evap monitor has run (several drive cycles).

It's funny that you have gone from a strict car guy to a warehouse guy so much that you feel you have to explain why you're working on cars and not the warehouse! Dude, we love the building stuff but despite what people say in the comments, everyone wants these videos of daily car fixes. I have learned a TON watching you and I love it. Sprinkle in the warehouse stuff when you can but believe me, people would start to disappear if you didn't show us all of the different vehicle fixes.

I just made a brake and or other fluid extraction out of an old mayo jar (one with a metal top) and use my vacuum pump. Works great for all kinds of fluid extraction. Even used it to bleed a GM hydroboost. I can't believe how well that worked. I was dreading the bleeding procedure. This was one shot and done!

Old school Chevy but new school Gabe with his DARPA, Intelligence Support ACTIVITY and Texas Speed shoulder replacement. Rumor is that Gabe was deployed to Venezuela on a solo mission to eliminate a Peruvian general selling Russian smoothbore fired anti-tank missiles. When his Chey-Tac Intervention failed to fire on a 1200 meter shot, he used a sewer pipe he ripped from the ground with his bare hands and took a Russian 125mm smoothbore AT-11 Sniper anti-tank round and punch fired it to take out his target and bodyguard contingent. The power generated to fire that round ruined his shoulder. Gabe denies this, but an in-country SAD unit reported it in a white line IAIR notice. #facts

as much as I hate using the bg brake flush machine, its still light-years better than manual bleeding :D
I've also seen a few dirty fill necks/ crusty caps cause evap leaks, often on a unwashed van that dirt has destroyed the sliding door rollers aswell

Also tell Gabe if he has a metal on metal sound when going over bumps from the rear look and see if the leaf spring rubber bushing have worn out and disappeared. These are the ones in between the leaf springs. If they have you will see an empty hole at the front or back of the lowest leaf spring. Parts are cheap but you need to install them and then put a washer bigger than the hole with a screw in from below. Hardware must be stainless. You can also carefully drill the stud that goes through the hole and insert a stainless cotter pin but I prefer the other method. They tend to fall out when you drive around with an unloaded bed.

All the small projects are great too. They are realistic to stuff we need to fix on our own vehicles. Not too many folks with an R8. :-)

You could do an entire series on “fix your friend’s ride”. These guys were al instrumental in the early episodes so it is only right to share the shop.
