I think what you're doing is awesome and I'm going to show your channel to anybody who'll listen haha. Bought the download package even though there's enough free stuff here to keep me busy for a long time, just showing my appreciation. Thanks from a terrible drummer.
Big Up Rob Mullarkey, composer producer bass player and drum programmerer for brotherly. He has a video on his channel with an entire transcription of system and him explaining it
Amazing video man. You are one of the drummers with more "grid" and "grid alignements" knowledge that i know. I like how you don't seem to bother with rudiments to go for the core of things.
Hey Nate, One of my Berklee students came to my private lesson 3 years ago and showed me System. I started listening to it and got crazy like most drummers and I did my transcription. After a few years I just went back to it and saw that you say in your web page that some "sources" told you beat 1 was somewhere else. Now my question is, are we sure? :) For my years the one would be on the word "how" where the 4 against 3 bass drum starts , so the modulation would happen in beat 5 of the 6/4. I have been trying to hear the one like you explain here and it doesn´t make much sense to say that´s beat one. I would appreciate your comments here. Congratulations for your great work and inspiration. Man I not only appreciate your hard work here but also how funny your videos are. Also how challenging most of the videos are. Thanks bro!
I dont know if it was purely because of time constraints or not, but there is a lot of bass drum work in the beginning and end verses that is overlooked in this analysis of brotherly. I've noticed almost all covers of the song miss this too and it is partially of what makes the beat sound so filthy at times so I am surprised no one else has picked up on it.
It would be really helpful if you could spend a little more time on the beginning of the song - especially where one is at the start of the song i.e. have the song playing and the count showing or metronome going at the same time . . . There's so much going on at the beginning of the tune
Wow, I never got past thinking it was in four with the '6' beat being played over inversed 1/4 note triplets. But this breaks it down even further, thanks (for all the videos they're all great)!!
I believe the only only way you can count this song and all of the accents is to have a longer count which would put it at 12/4. The "one" has to be where it is meter wise. Now can give the illusion of placing anywhere else all day long, but you have to have a basic count to build it on. There's not enough space for 6/4 to capture the accents.
Hey man, amazing video. I was just wondering if you'd be willing to give any tips on how your achieve your snare sound? It's honestly my ideal sound, and I've yet to figure out how myself. Thanks for your time!
Hey ! thanks so much for the explanation... helped me a lot. Is there a drumless version available? Found so many drum covers of this song. I was always wondering if everyone plays with the original ?
Я поначалу не понимал, какой размер, привязал к бас-бочке первую долю. Получилось не очень, сложный размер. Оказалось, что надо просто сдвинуть такт. Спасибо за подсказку.
Great job! Not all drummers covered this song only rly good ones like yourself. P.s. Might be time for a new snare head soon, j.k. It still sounds sick tho :)
This song is on 6/8 Substitution on the “e” bass drum is what I making sound It’s a very improvisational African rhythm The snare is the killer But it’s all in 6/8 (metric modulation)
Here's the thing... The tune is NOT in 6 but is in 4. What the drummer does is lay back the beat of 2 on the snare drum by a 16th and this turns the piece into an entirely different animal. The 6 count is a manipulation for this player's use and interpretation. But from the beginning. Nothing else changes except what the drummer does with the delayed 16th note on the snare drum. the tune remains in 4/4 at least 3/4 of the time if not all of it. I haven't listened to see if the entire song flips or changes time signature toward the end or not.
+Don Thomas snag.gy/OWSpC.jpg (bassist for brotherly) I agree that everyone has their own way. If the way you feel it works for you, great! When I first covered this tune I wasn't counting it the way the band wrote/felt it, so after I learned where their "1" was I made this lesson correcting the record;)
+Don Thomas Gotcha, and that's fine... it's definitely not wrong. However I do disagree with you when you say "everything is in 6." I'm just saying technically that isn't the case. The tune is in four just like when the song starts. What makes the tune sound flipped is the displaced 16th note on the 2 beat of the snare, along with what's being done on the hats. In addition the displaced 16th comes AFTER the beat of 2 on the snare and not before. At least according to the way Aurthur Kam covered it. The original may be different, I have to listen to it. Also, the flute solo is in 11/8. Your approach to the tune is slightly different but it works.
I think you're really wrong. The true aim when you play a beat is to feel it right. And actually, you're teaching a wrong feeling of this beat. I think it's really bad for people who want to learn this rythme. It's this kind of technic who actually bring some bad drumers, with a poor feeling. At no moment you talk about the 4/4 groov, and also at no moment you groov. I'm sorry if you take it bad but i just listen to what you're saying, explaining and playing and i tell you what i feel about it. I hope this could help you for the futur.
There are two rythmes : The first is a 4/4 hip hop feel groove and the second is a 12/8 african rythme. The like between these two rythmes is the 2 and 4 in 4/4 become the 3 an 6 croche in 12/8
Man you're so dope! Really inspiring and VERY educational. Much love and respect!
Thanks Juan! Really appreciate it!
You got it man! Keep pushing!
your power level is over 9000 ✊👏
I always wondered about this track but I never took the plunge! Unreal man!

Love Rob, obviously. Wish he'd remove the copyright strike against this video tho, as it's clearly fair use ;)
Excellent breakdown. Thank you SO much !!

This is a lovely video. Thanks so much for your help :)
I love the metric switch, reminds me of TesseracT or some Periphery

it's in 6/4. the co-writer confirmed it.
👍👍👍thanks!
So RAD!

I'm pretty sure this is just 4/4 to 3/4 with a 5/8 or 7/8 transition between the two above meters
