  • Shimmy phenomena is an oscillatory, combined lateral-yaw motion of the landing gear caused by the interaction between tyre and landing gear structure. Shimmy produces annoying vibrations and can even result in severe structural damage, including landing gear collapse. Currently landing gear failure is one of the main cause of accidents in commercial flights.
This video shows that adding a well-designed damper allows to reduce the undesirable and dangerous shimmy phenomena. The model and the simulation were performed by using MBDyn, a free general-purpose multibody dynamics simulation software. The animation was created in Blender.
