So many players fail to realize that I’d say a good 80% of all problems can be cured by a real good setup. I’d say, knowing how setup and intonate your own instrument is a really valuable skill, especially after you’ve been playing long enough to understand what exactly you like and don’t like, as everyone’s preferences are different.
I love your meticulous attention to detail...I thought that I was the only one, that did this kind of thing. It’s really satisfying, to pull everything apart...and make it look like new, again...isn’t it? Great videos...keep them coming.
Really nice work! I've been building, modifying, and hot-rodding basses for 30+ years, and your methods are great. I learned all I know from my friend (now passed on) Mike Lull.
15:15 ...this bridge is definitely an aftermarket, 3rd-party replacement, and not your stock 70s Fender part (brass sadles, hex screws, dark springs & intonation screws). Same with the brass nut. Otherwise a great job, and I love your attention to detail. A true labor of love! Thanks for sharin'...
Nice restoration job, quite clean. To my opinion,a lot of people, who want to buy such an instrument,in restored condition, start doubting its originality .They expect worn and a kind of fly rusty conditions to such aged basses. I had a 1978 Fender Jazzbas de Luxe, original and in pretty good condition, especially the neck, which was stamped by its builder "R.Friend".So i'm curious who stamped this neck, which isn't shown in this video.
I have a '65 Jazz bass, LP Blue (looks green) on the body & headstock. It has corrosion on pretty much every part. The metal piece that holds the knobs has cracks in the plating and the bridge is downright rusty. But I wouldn't want to touch any of the metal parts.
pneumatic00 I wish I could have kept my ‘64 Jazz Bass Lake Placid Blue with the headstock painted too. But I needed a car and it be a Dodge 🤢. That was 30 years ago....hate to think about the value of it now! Keep yours for as long as you can!!! Keep it all original!!
Pat, I have 79 P bass that I bought new in 1980, and i put on a Badass bridge on with EMG P/J pickups and I don't regret it because it sounds killer and was and still is a working bass. If I had the same bass now in original condition I wouldn't touch for resale value.
Nice work. I noticed 4 holes on neck/bridge connection, why is so? Micro neck joint usually have 3 holes. Seems like someone exeperimented with putting precision neck on jazz body, or something...? Keep good work.
This is the part I wondered about too. I'm not familiar with vintage fenders, so I don't know, but I'm wondering if this was a body that was made before the micro-tilt was born? I thought to myself.
Most likely the regular 4 hole plate was put on because they’re more stable. Often the neck may sway one way or the other because in reality there’s only two screws holding the neck in place on the three hole versions. The four screw version holds the neck nice and solid.
That bass has hardly been played unless it's had a refret. I'm the original owner of a 79 P bass seen in my photo and the neck sure has a lot more wear on it. The lacker on the edges of my neck has been warn heavily.
Pretty sure it wouldn't be devalued unless he refinished it or replaced the hardware, which is why he went to the measure of cleaning each individual screw. This was basically a clean and set up.
What can be used to wipe the body clean of all the build up.I have a 78 sunburst but the finish is very delicate and some of the polishes for guitar cleaning have made it worse.Leaving dull areas etc
I've heard that GHS Guitar Gloss is good if it doesn't contain any compound. However, I think it will take a lot of patience and time. To save time, I use a paint compound to remove the dirt.
I think it's best to use a file to sharpen it. If you put tape on the fingerboard to protect the fretboard, the thickness of the tape will not chip the frets. It is not protected by tape, such as I would recommend that you use tape for protection.
it looks like a legit 78 body. my guess is a previous owner put a four hole plate on because they're much better but then someone at a later date put the original plate back on.

great replacing the D string detuner by the original tuner..as i said..there are many 5 string basses and strings which are better than a detuner..and the warwick bass bridge are the best on the market..similar to the alembic style bridge..try it and you will hear the difference..best wishes. jorge.
Podrías explicar con que limpiaste el Headstock sin que se saliera la nitro, porque en esa época entiendo que los acabados del headstock eran con nitro y es susceptible con productos abrasivos. Buen trabajo!
If taken care of instruments last forever. This one wasnt maintained properly so it got rusty and needed restoration you should buy an old fender if you want that older sound they dont make anymore.
One of the holes, the hole next to the middle hole on the plate, is where you stick the allen key to adjust the neck tilt on 3-bolt necks. You slightly loosen the center neck bolt and *barely* loosen the corner neck bolts, stick in the allen key, and twist. At :51 you can see the word "adjust" stamped into the perimeter of the neck plate. Better pix: www.amplifiedparts.com/products/neck-plate-fender-chrome-3-bolt-70s-f-style

you did a great job restoring that bass

I don't hate rust like flies either.
I have an early 80's Japanese made Squire Jazz Bass which if I ever have the money, would love to have you restore.
The bass is a wonderful and valuable bass.

Superb restoration Andy

Judging by the state of the finish it looks like its been neglected

Excelente trabalho! ficou sensacional!
Isn’t the idea of a vintage bass , to leave it looking old , wouldn’t this devalue it , just curious 🙂
old ? yes, worn and rusty ? probably not, same with cars, if you have an old car you repair it and it still has the vintage feel
Pretty sure it wouldn't be devalued unless he refinished it or replaced the hardware, which is why he went to the measure of cleaning each individual screw. This was basically a clean and set up.
Not a fender neck ?
If it’s just cleaning, it’s fine. I’ve seen old Fenders getting repainted with transparent finish to protect the wood which in my opinion is fine
really good asmr video

Sorry to ask, is that the way to remove sharp edges on frets on a binded neck? No protection with tape or anything??
Looks like the file has a safe edge, but I’d still use tape or a fret protector just in case
I think he should have protected the edge of the fingerboard with tape, it doesn't matter if the file is smooth on its edges or not.
I always tape my stuff off so as to not make any marks. Some guys just do whatever though.
RL R so many armchair luthiers coming out the woodwork at the moment.
I think it's best to use a file to sharpen it.
If you put tape on the fingerboard to protect the fretboard, the thickness of the tape will not chip the frets.

I would recommend that you use tape for protection.
What happened to the D-Tuner from 3:38? :c
guess he really did restore to its original form
I need that... I need that...
I have this exact same bass.
Thats love
is this the matching body for the exact bass model ? Four holes on the back instead of three?
it looks like a legit 78 body. my guess is a previous owner put a four hole plate on because they're much better but then someone at a later date put the original plate back on.

I see someone already had a 4 bolt on the neck before trading it out for a 3 bolt plate.
Wonder why would you do that
