Bravo, Lily. Genuine brilliance.
OfficialVetox The Sun and The Mirror are newspapers in the UK that often talk about popular or celebrity culture, which is the subject of criticism in this song. My mind is still blown.
My favorite Lily Allen song. Topped the charts for an entire month back in the Autumn of 2008. Her vocals are on point, it's got a catchy tune, the message is about her talking about her sudden fame after the release to this song (hence her saying The Sun and the Mirror,) and also about people with their insercuities like apperence, body image and sexual perference. Ingenious!
An incredible track, the lyrics never fail to affect me. I've thought long and hard about what it's all about and come to the conclusion that Ms. Allen is preaching against disassociation - but is anyone listening? I hope so.
There's quuuite a few singers now who keep their accent to varying degrees. She def was the one in the last decade that made it pretty much acceptable though not unless there is someone I forgot
I discovered her because I found an iPod of a recovering addict who’s playlist was very sad yet moving and this was one of the songs. I was like 11 im 24 now and damn Lily was right about a lot.
I have several functioning iPods, about 5 or 6 if u want me to Mail them to you. A purple nano iPod, pink nano, some small silver ones and they were belonging to my family members but I have them all in a box now all functioning
Here we are, some 13years later, waiting for more Lilly in 2022. She came from nowhere. Literally. Magical and super-talented. I guess families come first and good luck to her. She's done fantastic x
she is one of those who represented my world once. I never exaggerated my interest on her as she would like. she wouldn't like to be overrated. I'm not listening to her music any more. Because I've got of her What ever I needed. She is like an old good book resting in my library.
+Holly Mackinnon (Mack) I'd heard of her, but never really listened until I decided to look her up after reading an article on Alfie. Her older stuff is great! This song is the one I get others started with ;)
Are you stupid of course this is her accent when she sings and speaks.....(.but the point you're making is that she's from a posh background) So what? She's not always gonna speak like the queen of England. Plus she's not that posh nwayz. She's still a londoner most of us speak like her. I'm from west london so I should know.
This song is nice to listen at first, then you look to the lyrics and you'll get it. It is daunting how we are being bombarded with advertisements all the time, telling us to buy, media telling us what we should be paying attention to. Honestly, we're used to too much stimulation in our daily lives, that a short while on our own without internet has us bored. It's true for me, so I try to sit in silence often. It's calming.
Gambling adverts, erectile disfunction ads, gay couple having their car delivered, mixed race couples on every ad, Twitter tweeting and followers, wagon wheels and bounty decreasing in size, the list goes on

this is one of the most honest songs I've heard in my life... :)
TwentyØnePhantasticPotatoHeads IntheBlueBadlands I love her, she's so amazing ♥️
Pretty sure it’s intended to be at least slightly tongue in cheek. Considering the fact that the artist is clearly impervious to these cultural influences yet she notices these bizarre traits in others.
Clearly this song is clever and funny...
She is one of the very many celebs who is outspoken about the avalanche of lies & corruption in the world. The main reason she 'fizzled' out of the mainstream spotlight....
She chose to quit the industry
@@kittykatzcount1092 Exactly! - media is as corrupt as politicians.
I don't think that's true. And she wasn't necessarily outspoken about lies and corruption in the world, so much as she was singing a song of something similar, whether she believed that, or not. If there's evidence, then please tell me I'm wrong, otherwise I won't have any reason to correct myself.
@@FitzgeraldStanburyWeissV yeah, growing up is realising just how many people say something and don't actually mean it. not sure if that's allen, but most people are just great at faking/ marketing themselves/ aesthetics. pretty disappointing in general of people.
THE MESSAGE IT SENDS!! MY GAWD!!! standing ovation to u!
The creative concepts behind all her music videos are so underrated. She’s such a genius when it comes to creating a mystical world that reflects her music.
"I look in the sun and I look in the mirror." Clever play on words trying to hint the two newspapers.
I didn't even notice that. That's brilliant.
+Maks Tracy Neither did I. Ingenious.
+Awiar Nasseri Wooooowwwwww, that is so clever and ingenious and brilliant. Not. Bunch of idiots.

No, I was genuinely astounded by how stupid you and your friends are.
Some songs are just on a different level of completeness and perfection. This is up there with the best of them.
I miss lily Allen she was one of the best singers with real lyrics about real life singing from the soul. Come back lily we miss you x
I already thought that "And I am a weapon of massive consumption/And it's not my fault it's how I'm programmed to function" was the cleverest couplet in the history of pop music and only today, almost a decade later, did I realize that the next line about looking at the sun and mirror isn't just metaphorical (which works fine) but is a reference to the tabloids. Bravo, Lily. Genuine brilliance.
I got that one instantly, however no one ever gets the the sun anymore as they stopped the page 3 :(
didn't get it
Oh, nice. I didn't get that reference. Very clever and lyrics-wise likely my favorite pop song.
r/iamverysmart
Wooooh
SHE'S SO BEAUTIFUL **-**
I agree with you!!!!
Jack Venice +1 egree
yeah..she was
‘I’ll look at The Sun and I’ll look in The Mirror’ is such a clever lyric.
rags sheets always are
I’d imagine any not from the UK wouldn’t get it. 👍🏽
"I'll look at The Sun and I'll look in The Mirror."
I see what you did there.
My mind is blown. Forever.
MY GOD THAT WAS WELL SPOTTED...... I DONT KNOW WHATS RIGHT AND WHATS REAL ANYMORE
OfficialVetox The Sun and The Mirror are newspapers in the UK that often talk about popular or celebrity culture, which is the subject of criticism in this song.
My mind is still blown.
chiffmonkey how did i not notice?
OMFG I GET IT LOL
My favorite Lily Allen song. Topped the charts for an entire month back in the Autumn of 2008. Her vocals are on point, it's got a catchy tune, the message is about her talking about her sudden fame after the release to this song (hence her saying The Sun and the Mirror,) and also about people with their insercuities like apperence, body image and sexual perference. Ingenious!
big message in this song.... respect .
An incredible track, the lyrics never fail to affect me. I've thought long and hard about what it's all about and come to the conclusion that Ms. Allen is preaching against disassociation - but is anyone listening? I hope so.
I think she is the only british singer who doesnt lose her accent when she sings.
There's Marina and the Diamonds
Kate Nash
There's quuuite a few singers now who keep their accent to varying degrees. She def was the one in the last decade that made it pretty much acceptable though not unless there is someone I forgot
Damon albarn is known for keeping his when he sings
biffy clyro also
My all time favorite song.
I feel like you couldn’t describe this era of music to someone, you just have to know
I discovered her because I found an iPod of a recovering addict who’s playlist was very sad yet moving and this was one of the songs. I was like 11 im 24 now and damn Lily was right about a lot.
Damn, where did you find this functioning ipod? And how did u know from who it was?
I have several functioning iPods, about 5 or 6 if u want me to Mail them to you. A purple nano iPod, pink nano, some small silver ones and they were belonging to my family members but I have them all in a box now all functioning
@@eloisekendall1470 wow.
Still got my ipod shuffle, little orange metal thing, that will most likely work past me
@@eloisekendall1470 i'll take one
"Everything's cool as long as I getting thinner" one of the BEST sentences I have heard in years!! 😂😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣
Here we are, some 13years later, waiting for more Lilly in 2022. She came from nowhere. Literally. Magical and super-talented. I guess families come first and good luck to her. She's done fantastic x
Can’t believe I forgot about this song until tonight.
Me too haha, I saw on Tik Tok xD
I forgot about it until today haha
Whaaaaat. Loved always redecorating my Myspace layout and selecting this as my song
Me too until day
Was trying to think of music I haven't listened to 15 -20 some odd years
I'm 38 for reference
she probably wrote this about celebrity culture in the 00's. But it is wayy more fitting in this day and age of influencer culture. Fantastic.
Listening to an interview now. She says it is about the Internet culture and false images.
This song is more on point now in our current day and age than it has ever been.
Such a well crafted pop song, excellent production and plenty of hooks.
Great lyrics. She knows how to write a simple but great song.
she is one of those who represented my world once. I never exaggerated my interest on her as she would like. she wouldn't like to be overrated. I'm not listening to her music any more. Because I've got of her What ever I needed. She is like an old good book resting in my library.
Her songs are way far ahead of its time. Imagine this song in 2020.
She rather belongs to an era that finished at the end of the noughties. That song is in the tradition of '90's- early 2000's pop.
@@ipiap this song is mid to late 2000s era
@@sugar_venom Yes, to be more precise, this type of well-crafted pop flourished from the mid-nighties until the end of the noughties.
Well, I was in high school late 90's when Barbie Girl by Acqua was a hit and this song is not too far from that one
Alina C nothing like Barbie girl, are you mad 😂😂
00:33-00:35 "I look at the Sun and I look in the Mirror". Two British tabloids , well done.
Jewish*
What do you mean? I'm from Mexico would you care to explain me this part please?
+Nighter Leon the sun and the mirror are newspaper companies in the UK
No one buys the sun anymore because they stopped page 3
+heylily11 ¡oh! Thanks for the explanation. This song's really cool.
I'm really loving this girl. She speaks the truth and it's funny to see bitter people who just don't get what this song is actually about.
Clever lyrics. " Look in The Sun and the The Mirror." are references to best selling red top newspapers in the U.K. Great song writing!
In future more people will relate to her songs.and she will be timeless.real life struggles.thats how it is.
life was much simpler when you'd hear songs like this on the radio
ua-cam.com/video/wtbcaWnybzs/v-deo.html .
Agree
So true
Or you were a child that had no idea about life and now you see it with rosy glasses, lol
facts
Going through all her songs cause i havent heard of her for a while and finding out that all my old favourite songs were sung by her and i had no idea
Holly Mackinnon wow I did the same thing! Her songs are awesome
Holly Mackinnon I love her old music sooo much
the best is when she swears, typical brit!
I like her new album too but her oldest one Alright Still is my favourite. 💞
+Holly Mackinnon (Mack) I'd heard of her, but never really listened until I decided to look her up after reading an article on Alfie. Her older stuff is great! This song is the one I get others started with ;)
Makes me smile to think that her songs give a message and are relatively home.
I'm a Rock guy and I don't pay attention to Pop stars but I love Lily Allen. She's a real singer with real songs.
The British have done it again. Another fantastic female singer.
Same vioce different face fake news
Best song of that decade 2000-2009. Brilliant lyrically, cool bells and whistles on it.
AFTER DECADES I FINALLY FOUND MY CHILDHOOD SONG I COULDNT FIND UNTIL TODAY OMGG 😭😭😭😭😭
here after Lorde mentioned this masterpiece for her mood ring genius lyrics
same:)
Same
Yeah same i love lily and i love lorde and i love that one is inspiring the other
sameee
Me too :-]
Her accent is amazing
I know i wish i was a Londoner!
Mark Coetzee it's actually not her real accent. She speaks far more posh in person. she invented that accent specifically because it's cool.
***** No, it is her accent i think
Are you stupid of course this is her accent when she sings and speaks.....(.but the point you're making is that she's from a posh background) So what? She's not always gonna speak like the queen of England. Plus she's not that posh nwayz.
She's still a londoner most of us speak like her. I'm from west london so I should know.
Seventh Heaven 100% correct
Perfectly awesome song and shes gorgeous
Great minds :)
Youre not kidding..
Stevie boy is here in October 2024.XX I suffered fear most of my 55 years on this earth and this song reaches my heart and soul. ❤❤❤❤
10 years and this song is still amazing
clever words Mrs. Allen
Gambling adverts, erectile disfunction ads, gay couple having their car delivered, mixed race couples on every ad, Twitter tweeting and followers, wagon wheels and bounty decreasing in size, the list goes on
Same with literally every song of hers🤣
i agree. sometimes we pay too much attention to what's outside that we forget to look within and nurture what's there...
@@gaz4840 Okay?
@@Earthneedsado-over177 no, now toilet rolls are 2 cm smaller
this song is so nostalgic i cant even handle
The lyrics of this song hit hard. Wish more modern day pop music had this amount of depth
When she says "I look at the sun and I look in the mirror" does she mean the tabloids? Love these lyrics so much :)))))
Yes
Nostalgia !!
I agree
Everything's so British! Nice video. I loved Lily when I was a child and I still like her.
I loved too!!!!💖
It's warming but is still haunting and puts a chill in any adults heart that has grown up in this world...
