Yes I love this song
Lily Allen was wayy ahead of her time..
In what way was she ahead of her time?
@@apex1615she was ahead of her time in this particular song because everything she mentioned about being famous and social media is happening right now I.e insta models etc.....
like it wasnt happening then. no offense. but she isnt ahead of her time, she is just a very talented singer.
@@apex1615 I guess it was happening but it wasn't so visual as to what it is now, but I agree with you.she is a very talented singer.
Yes!!!!!!!!!
Christ, is this song really 14 years old? It's still one of the freshest songs out there!
mate me listening to it again am nearly 60 year old fuckin refreshing
You're never too old to enjoy good music. I'm in my early 60s and love her music. Cheers!
Legit.
Oh, fuck--I'm OLD.
Its since the message is even more relevant today
I like how brutally honest and unapologetically truthful she is. She's not trying to sell herself under an exaggerated image or have an alter ego, she is just spitting facts about life in this modern age and its so relatable.
This comment is underrated asf!
I agree. Crazy to think this came out in 2008
Greed is funny... And it works. That is you will get your money, and materialism if you are hungry enough for it. But it`s never going to give you the contentment you seek ( trust me i know) . There is always another " shiny new thing" to chase around the corner.
Agreed, I love the honesty and vulnerability in her tracks. Lily is always on my playlists.Still going strong in 2024!
Can you imagine if Taylor Swift did this song? It would be so cool, but. you know, in an ironic way.
"I am a weapon of massive consumption, and its not my fault, its how i'm programmed to function"
What an awesome line

For all you none Brits, "I'll look at The Sun and I'll look in the Mirror" are two British newspapers for anyone who's unaware. One of my favourite lines of the whole song, very clever
Oh my gosh all of these years that has been the one line in this song that I didn't think was satirical-- I can't believe that went over my head thank you!
dont worry, brit culture is such that most internationals will know of these media outlets.
Are Dub yeah the funny thing for me is that I am familiar with the sun and the mirror but they are not commonplace enough in my life that it would be something I think of upon hearing those names out of context
Didn't know that, thank you.
It is meant in two different ways though. We have the sun in the U.S. too
As I approach my late 20s, I will never forget how amazing and massive this was in 2009, during my final years of secondary school. I am so nostalgic for it!
It happens to all of us.
Same. Was 15 and 29 now
She is one of the very many celebs who is outspoken about the avalanche of lies & corruption in the world. The main reason she 'fizzled' out of the mainstream spotlight....
She chose to quit the industry

It's better than Kanye west
I used to love this type of music when I was growing up. It made me oddly calm
+Holy Chicken same omg
It still exists tho
i know i have been searching for this song for years
I miss her type of artist. A songstress with a mellow and sweet voice but with lyricisms that pack a symphony of sarcasm, viciousness, and truth that one might fail to notice at first because of how sweet and casual she is singing it. She’s like that rebellious girl who doesn’t try too hard. Love her a lot.
Wanted to write something similar but you sir wrote every single word perfectly.
Exactly like Melanie Martinez or Jessie J
I would imagine most of her lyrics are from her Dad. And the melody was written by Greg Kurstin
Melanie Martinez is basically the modern day Lilly Allen
that was Marina in her first few eras :'D
I think that Lily Allen is one of the cleverest songwriters in the British pop scene, writing for a British audience. I mean how many Americans hearing the song would know that the "Sun and the Mirror" is referring to two specific British tabloid newspapers? Genius.
Dont ever write for the Americans . They are so inward thinking they wont get it it if you wrote it down in Crayon and drawings
I'm an American lulz

brit politics is getting a world stage these days. for the entertainment value.
I mean i learned about that right here in this comments section yes, but pretty much everything else also applies to the us media

I remember this song back in the day, but never realised just how interesting and well-written it is. Amazing Lily Allen could make a chart-topping song like this.
What do you mean? What do you mean that you’re amazed!? It’s a good song!
@@MichaelSuperbacker was thinking how it's exceptional to have a great pop song that's also brutally honest. There were other artists back then who achieved the same (Eminem, Kanye West, Amy Winehouse), 2000s pop music wasn't just sex and partying. To this day Lily Allen's tone is very unique.
I was obsessed with this song as a 11 year old girl. here I am, 26 years old and the amount of nostalgia I’m feeling now gives me goosebumps

god i remember that plan b album that year or 2010 what a good selection of brit songs there were at that time.
My English teacher showed my class this song (I'm not a native speaker). She gave us parts of the lyrics and we had to complete them. It was a bit hard because of Lily's strong accent, but it was fun. Later, I accidentally found her song Smile on UA-cam. I became her fan.
The lyrics hit to you differently as you grow older, I was once obsessed with this song when I was 15 and I have just got my second-first listen again at 24

"I don't care about smart, I don't care about funny." But her lyrics are both. :D
U 2 cleva :*
It's witty no6 smart
The creative concepts behind all her music videos are so underrated. She’s such a genius when it comes to creating a mystical world that reflects her music.
I love that her British accent is so prominent you can hear it when she sings. She has a nice voice.
To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Lily’s music. The meanings of her songs are extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of advanced musical theory most of the lyrics will go over a typical listener’s head. There's also Allen’s nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into her characterisation- her personal philosophy draws heavily from biblical literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of her talent to realise that she’s not just a prodigy- she’s saying something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike this goddess truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the importance of her existential catchphrase "It’s British Time" which itself is a cryptic reference to Sugar Ray’s American epic ‘Every Morning’. I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as her genius unfolds itself into their ears. What fools.. how I pity them. 😂
And yes, by the way, i DO have a Lily Allen tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It's for the ladies’ eyes only- and even then they have to demonstrate that they're within 5 IQ points of my own (preferably lower) beforehand. Nothin personnel kid 😎
God can this guy shut up

It's incredible how well this song aged. The social commentary she made with this song is much more problematic today than it was in 2009.
"I'll look at The Sun and I'll look in The Mirror."
I see what you did there.
My mind is blown. Forever.
MY GOD THAT WAS WELL SPOTTED...... I DONT KNOW WHATS RIGHT AND WHATS REAL ANYMORE
OfficialVetox The Sun and The Mirror are newspapers in the UK that often talk about popular or celebrity culture, which is the subject of criticism in this song.
My mind is still blown.

OMFG I GET IT LOL
30% satire 70% the truth and nature. Always lovely Lily.
I never believed this was satire
@@brijmsn It was made as such, and parts truly are. But also, I feel through the song that the part that is nature is kinda embraced by her, or, one can say, recognized and not defensively denied, or at least she is ambivalent about it, which is why I find her lovely. Well, that's at least how it appears to me (for the nature side).
I think this songs works because of the ambiguity. If she was just showing off about her awesome life the song would lose its charm.
I am sure on some level Lily Allen doesn't like the idea of Africans dying so people in the developed world can have cheap diamonds.
But like most of us she isn't exactly losing sleep over it.
I am sure most people feel a bit bad about these things and also a bit bad that they don't feel that bad about it.
It's not right but....
@@brijmsn Given she was born into money I'd say this song was just her lived experience.
@@katakisLives Yeah but only means she understands exactly what she's singing about all the more. @@rzn194 oohh I love that song, one of the greatest songs of the past 20 years. ‘BTSTU’ by Jai Paul and ‘Out Getting Ribs’ by King Krule are some others.
lol right?? I loved this song when i was like 15, but I didn't really know anything about music back then. it randomly popped into my head today for the first time in years, and upon listening to it again... yeah, it's actually kinda neat? it's got that chromatic descending progression in the verses with the flat VII and flat VI, and then the flat VII again in the chorus. There's a fair amount of tension between the chords and the melody too. pretty cool for a pop song!
I like the ambiguous major-minor going on.

Given its about being fabulously wealthy I don't find it that relatable
@@katakisLives Yeah, but consumerism doesn't just affect the rich. Those of us who aren't rich just feel inadequate and envious.
When you look at our modern world today, this song ages insanely well for 2008 standards.
It's satire on women who want to be rich and famous without even deserving it, that all they have to do is strip down for the cameras, and get into trouble on the news. These women also want to spend their credit cards away on luxury like cars and diamonds (while not even caring about what happens to those who mine diamonds just for her to spend 10,000 dollars on), despite not knowing how to even stop spending.
And Lily says that these women become surrounded by fake beauty so much, they can't tell what's real anymore ("I don't know what's right and what's real anymore, and I don't know how I'm meant to feel anymore"). And she'll never know when the public will stop dismissing this stuff as normal and actually open up about it ("And when do you think it will all become clear, because I'm being taken over by the fear").
I'm very strict with what kind of pop music I accept. And this here has to be by far one of the best forgotten/underrated pop songs made. And no one really took this seriously back in 2009, that the issue of fake fame and consumerism is now double worse today than what it was back then.
Heavy nostalgia right there
I already thought that "And I am a weapon of massive consumption/And it's not my fault it's how I'm programmed to function" was the cleverest couplet in the history of pop music and only today, almost a decade later, did I realize that the next line about looking at the sun and mirror isn't just metaphorical (which works fine) but is a reference to the tabloids. Bravo, Lily. Genuine brilliance.
I got that one instantly, however no one ever gets the the sun anymore as they stopped the page 3 :(

people (who clearly dont understand the English language or our culture) she isnt talking from her point of view. the entire song is from the point of view of naive people who want to be celebrities it is also from the point of view from celebrities as well. firstly lets start of with the sun and the mirror... they are 2 british national newspapers. when she says lets look at the sun and i'll look in the mirror. she is saying lets look at the newspapers. now for the rest of the song it is about how people want to be celebrities because of how good it is. however lily is pointing out all the negativities and how celebrities just dont care that they are constantly judged and if someone says loose 3 stone even though they are perfect they will.

Lily Allen's 'The Fear' is an anthem that hits close to home - its catchy melody can easily make you bop along. But beyond the upbeat tune lies a deeper message about society's obsession with fame and materialism. Allen's lyrics are cleverly thought-provoking, making you ponder our culture's pursuit of perfection and the cost it comes with. It's a tune that sticks with you, not just for its rhythm but for its poignant commentary.
Now this is the kind of existential crisis I dearly wish I was having.

this is one of the most honest songs I've heard in my life... :)
TwentyØnePhantasticPotatoHeads IntheBlueBadlands I love her, she's so amazing ♥️
Pretty sure it’s intended to be at least slightly tongue in cheek. Considering the fact that the artist is clearly impervious to these cultural influences yet she notices these bizarre traits in others.
Clearly this song is clever and funny...
Going through all her songs cause i havent heard of her for a while and finding out that all my old favourite songs were sung by her and i had no idea
Holly Mackinnon wow I did the same thing! Her songs are awesome
Holly Mackinnon I love her old music sooo much
the best is when she swears, typical brit!
I like her new album too but her oldest one Alright Still is my favourite. 💞
+Holly Mackinnon (Mack) I'd heard of her, but never really listened until I decided to look her up after reading an article on Alfie. Her older stuff is great! This song is the one I get others started with ;)
Lily’s song writing is amazing. It’s about real shit
I first heard this on a Delta flight out of Atlanta. We rose above the clouds, sun glinting off our silvery wings, with Lily's silvery voice ringing in my ears: "When do you think/It will all become clear?"
I really don't know. Fourteen years have passed and I still don't have any answers -- but I'm packin' plastic . . .
life was much simpler when you'd hear songs like this on the radio
