The reason why you think this is ahead is that today's club music is so behind.

it seems a font that inspired soft cell in their first releases.... adapted, but Marc and Dave certainly listened to this song before making their first singles

It's comparable to the demo of Being Boiled or 4JG released at the same time but it's amazing for its era.

... Chris and Cosey is Chris and Cosey. No need to categorize any band ever. Each band and artist is sum-total of what they're expressing at the time. There is no label-box or style-category. Realize Individualism. Each composition is personal, not conformed to some category. Experience music without boxing it. There is no electro-anything, people can explore all over in what they do. Category-style doesn't exist unless people deliberately trap themselves in a tunnel vision

agreed. every artist has their own individual spin, but they all somewhat lump themselves into categories organically, due to the different combinations of instruments and rhythms most people can keep track of and hum/remember being limited, and the more general human need to enter into broad categories before being able to tweak details. true, the lines blur between genres and no artist should be limited to one - but in an example of what you said, even the Beatles started listening to Elvis and playing skiffle all day before they got big and much more experimental. in fact you see it in artists' careers all the time, their first albums are not necessarily their creative peak; for example, and since this is Chris Carter, remember TG's United (lovely if basic) and compare it to this more developed A Space Between, or AB7A, or to his even more developed work with Cosey Fanni Tutti later on.
not to mention, commercial music is demand-driven (there's corps and special interests with influence, to be sure, but in the end it's the customer who listens and pays). and the lowest common denominator usually just listens to some genres. i do agree it's kind of an endless discussion when more nuanced and varied acts such as Chris and Cosey are being pegged into boxes they cannot fit in - but on the other hand, some other acts are indeed fitting, not to say they are bad, just that some may not have been memorable (think commercial one hit wonders). and well music with synths and rhythm music in general can be grouped by rhythm, it cannot be helped - if we didn't, we wouldn't replicate said rhythm well would we... lest we forget, Industrial Records had similar sounding artists in its roster, ergo naming the genre and being able to reach future acts elsewhere...

thats true and its also true that sonic sensibilities ebb and flow like rivers and its still interesting to look for where the springs and confluences and deltas are and give them names to help navigate
