I don’t like this either, and I’m a huge D.L. fan ! The way he acts ( drunk?) shouting “ Marco Polo” , how he plays the guitar, .. gives me the creeps. fortunately he is seldom like this!
That small mirror attached to the Melbourne console is legendary 0:53. Keeping an eye in real time of whats happening with artists and positioning behind himself and the engineer. Love DL.
I liked his playing. Going for soul and feel rather than red hot chops. Nice tone and great bare fingers technique. Reminded me of Neil Young in places.
You can tell he's pretty inspired by Neil Young... his guitar is like a Neil-Young-caster, similar vintage Les Paul with a firebird pickup, P90 and bigsby same as Neils, just minus the amateur black overcoat making Neils 'Old Black'.
Daniel Lanois is a legend. A French Canadian, he produced the best of the U2 albums (his influence is clearly heard on The Joshua Tree and The Unforgettable Fire). He's worked with the best of the best, and he's an accomplished artist in his own right. So, if he wants to fuck around in his L.A. mansion on his vintage instruments (that he can afford because he's earned it) and be a bit eccenteric, that's fine. Just being in that room and letting the sounds of that vintage AC30 and Les Paul wash over you would have been a delight, no matter what you were playing. A lot of smug, petty wankers on here who obviously know nothing about music if they don't know who Lanois is.
Lanois raw and uncut. Love it. Obviously a lot of bedroom warriors in this comment section obsessed with "chops" of which they probably have little. Funny.
Right? Just because you guys don't dig it doesn't mean he isn't a very renowned player. He may have been a little drunk or something here but go listen to his work. He is a great player and it's funny how there are a billion shred players out there who can't write a decent album. He may be a little sloppy but at least he has his own style.
Well to me I hear naturally lot's of Hendrix there then comes the "Wilder" by the Troggs ( R.l.P. Reg Presley who died yesterday.) and then I hear some Steve Howe from the Yes Album but the main thing naturally are these 3 little puppies the Vox AC 30's that does that fat sound! and Paplo as well (hehe) or what ever the sound egineers name was!
LOL "truth serum".... that definitely looks like a grappa glass. And I bet that the serum was good white grappa :-)) All of which obviously turns into Monster Sound & Vibes!!
The Portuguese make the best tasting firewater ( agua ardente, grappa) the one I like is the one made from Wild lychees fruit ( I grew up in Portugal) which is distilled at least 10 times ( about 75% pure ) . When you drink it slowly it is a smell and taste that is smooth and woody. Too bad only available in the Portuguese Stores. Tried the Italian Grappa total shit. Every Village in Portugal makes their own wine and distills their own alcohol. Good luck getting the LCBO there LMFAO.
1) "Wild leeches" as in sanguessuga?!? Eek! 2) What kind of grappa did you try? Way to easy to comment "total shit"... 3) From the way Daniel drinks his grappa I would doubt that it's anything like 75% proof ;-)
Wild "lychees" fruit I used to eat many of those from the forests there. Was always getting yelled at by the old dudes to not eat them hahaha In portuguese "aguardente de medronho" is probably one of the finest . However the industrial version does not taste the same. We bring some bottles from overseas when on Vacation. Here is the fruit en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arbutus_unedo
Lanois is an O.G. at trolling and it seems some of you fell for it. He was just auditioning amps to record someone else. Listen to him play the steel, then close your mouth and go practice.
+Kimon Matara LOL. rookie mistake. surprised you haven't heard of Daniel Lanois... he's a musical genius. aside from his own brilliant music spanning multiple decades; he produced U2's "The Unforgettable Fire" album. launched them into the stratosphere. check out his Premiere Guitar Rig Rundown. master of the lap-steel. there's so much more to him than this deliberately grungey atonal work-out.
+Coldacre I think conflating interesting sound with interesting music is the rookie mistake. This stuff isn't "atonal". It's just jerkily played blues chords. His lap-steel is the same sort of thing. Just cleaner, and with tons of delay. But hey, I'm sure he's a great sound engineer.
+Kimon Matara It must be really tough when talents such as yourself whom no one outside of your immediate family and friends have heard of have to witness lesser mortals getting the breaks
Daniel, I've been in love with you for a thousand years. The guitar sounds great, but you sound terrible! I can hear you struggling to breathe when you walk across the room. Bless your heart. Keep moving and creating. From the most selfish of us.
+PC160 I think he's just enjoying himself pulling different sounds out of his gear.I didn't hear him announce he would play for you the type of solo you wanted to hear.
Kimon Matara manners, dont got anything nice to say dont say nothing, golden rule, the internet has been around long enough to make ppl rude and heartless, and coming from nobody's with jealous hearts, poor fucks
May he live to 100.
Love the architecture of that place! And the music of course♡
God, I love his playing!
Very Cool Sound from that Gear in this...I love the deep dark tone flying here,,,great stuff
love the screen name!! (from a fellow inhaler)
Les Paul, P-90s, Bigsby, AC30, and a leather jacket. How can you go wrong with that?
Apparently you can!
To have a bigsby but to still shake the guitar it is guitarded ! So artsy and gimmicky. This is what you do when you are not a good player.
Thank f people commented on this. I was getting the feeling I was the only one who thought this sounded awful
I don’t like this either, and I’m a huge D.L. fan !
The way he acts ( drunk?) shouting “ Marco Polo” , how he plays the guitar, ..

totally ripping off neil young. of course who can resist?

Some of the most beautiful tone ever recorded
This is quite lovely to listen to
+Anthony Grantham I agree, it'd make a great Christmas #1 dialogue and all
I liked his playing. Going for soul and feel rather than red hot chops. Nice tone and great bare fingers technique. Reminded me of Neil Young in places.
it's around the same time le noise from neil young was recorded with him

@@kenichi407 it’s a simple setup show off, the man daniel has been drinking in this as well, it’s all in good fun
totally ripping off neil young. of course who can resist?
Guess who has been hanging with Neil?
Great stuff
Well said!
totally ripping off neil young. of course who can resist?
U ROCK THAT AC30 DAN!🎶❤
Love it, raw power
at 4:20... quintessential Lanois vibe... lol how appropriate. Amazing!
casa meravigliosa. posto meraviglioso per lavorare… /
wonderful home. wonderful place to work...
what a pure tone he gets...
Like when Picasso started painting weird things just a few could enjoy.
Deadly vox tone. Absolutely love it. I thought jack white liked to fight his guitar!
Sounds a little bit like Mick Ronson's Young Lust (Ellen Foley) around 5:12
Lanois raw and uncut. Love it.

yup

@@RobertSloverWhat?
Looks like one seriously cool house.
Hell Yeah!....the relentless search for ultimate "raw" expression.
is that a Vincent in the driveway?what a life!
Sounds more heavy metal than any heavy metal I've ever heard.
Fucking legend.
That's our Canadian boy...
INCREDIBLE---God I love this guy
Jacob : "this guy" has made the U2 sound...and produced Bob Dylan Neill Young.U2 ect.ect..so yeah "this guy" has fans....
He is under rated...I adore him

Nice fun house he's got, too....

Ohh this video rocks!
what's that "truth serum"? irish moonshne?
The shot hits him at 4:26
Is this in Silverlake?
I just know he had or has a studio in Silverlake and he has posted many videos from this location...
Hah! Not that there's anything wrong with that (in my Seinfeld voice) :)
A glorious middle finger to "shredding" and "chops."
LOL "truth serum".... that definitely looks like a grappa glass. And I bet that the serum was good white grappa :-))
All of which obviously turns into Monster Sound & Vibes!!
I'm betting it's Jamison's Irish Whiskey ;)
+Sally Claire Wentworth LOL, don't know if they make too much Grappa in Ireland! the Italians would be very pissed off :D

I don't get it? How the hell did you get that sound from what you did?
It's called, turning everything up to 10 :)
the knob's on it go to 11...
Lanois is a sorcerer of analog tone. Since the Belladonna album he's been just taking it further and further out into the stratosphere.
I don't think I've ever seen someone move so spasmodically while playing the guitar.
Neil
Neil Young. Daniel Lanois is like a Neil super fan lol. His older rigs and guitars were basically clones of Neil's.
Gloria.... G L O R I A.
He was high on Neil Young that day
Fucking Ace
Looks like he tries to tear that poor LP the neck apart... But sounds good.
Daniel, it's "Marco!" Then the OTHER guy yells "Polo!" LOL. Oh, and BTW...Whoa.
can see at 2.26 its a sandwich gibo. so 70s i guess
Amos Kamil it's a 53 lester mcpaulfish, with a firebird bridge, ya dont know shiittee
WTH am I watching. Glad I did tho ❤
Neil
I’m confused... Was that supposed to be good?
ah yes shades of Neil
LOL Marco Polo where can you be ?
Who cares - he can have what he wants. I prefer those who struggle.
You do know people "struggle" to make it. "Make it" meaning this is what comes next. If you stay in the struggle, it's your fault.
How a great room and superb recording setup makes guitar soundscaping effective... Not neccessarily something to my liking though..
damn. great done but like, wheres the chops?
TheInboil pork or karate?
Dude drinks “truth serum”; becomes a Neil Young impersonator; and plays nonsense….this is beyond noodling….
No one needs to be told that everything they do isn't "amazing!" like the rich and famous...
People inside a home with sun glasses and a hat always look a bit ridiculous to me.
Got here following links around for AC30+P90 sounds. Not familiar with this gentleman. He may be toneful, but he's not tuneful.

that must be his day off =D
U2 need Steve lillywhite lillywhite brings u2 back to reality

I don't like it when Neil Young picks up and electric, and this is no better. Doesn't mean his producing talents are not great.
If Joe Cocker was Neil Young
he gets a bit "sloppy"
It’s cos of the “truth serum” or Lanois has Neil Young Syndrome….Definitely both….
Uh.........yeah. Cool B&W filming. But.....the musicianship is underwhelming.
+PC160 Get a clue, will ya!
+PC160 I think he's just enjoying himself pulling different sounds out of his gear.I didn't hear him announce he would play for you the type of solo you wanted to hear.
+bootlegapples Well, UA-cam didn't announce the kind of comment you'd like to read, either.
