The Little Albert experiment was a famous psychology experiment conducted by John B. Watson and his graduate student Rosalie Rayner in 1920. The aim was to demonstrate that classical conditioning could be used to condition an emotional response in a human subject.
In the experiment, a young boy named Albert was exposed to a white rat, a rabbit, a monkey, masks, and other objects. Initially, Albert showed no fear of these objects. However, whenever Albert reached out to touch the white rat, a loud noise was made by striking a steel bar with a hammer. After several pairings of the rat and the loud noise, Albert began to show fear when presented with the rat even in the absence of the loud noise.
This experiment illustrated the principles of classical conditioning, demonstrating how a neutral stimulus (the rat) could become associated with fear through pairing with an unconditioned stimulus (the loud noise). It raised ethical concerns about the treatment of human subjects in research, particularly regarding the emotional well-being of participants.
