I read her autobiography “dancing on my grave” it’s heartbreaking. She really went through a lot.

She was too young and Balanchine expected THIN. Not eating affects the growth of one’s brain. It’s a dastardly illness.

I will left comments under each video of Gelsey.I've just followed her on Twitter.Sorry to see that she has only ten followers and very few tweets...She has posted some of her pictures with Misha and she doesn't allow any comments under those pictures.I cried for their faded love.😢😢😭

Kirkland was a truly great dancer. I don’t doubt she met up with a lot of jealousy in the ballet world. But I also think she was withdrawn and socially inept. She spent so much time internally that she missed a lot of social nuance. Her dealings with Balanchine and Baryshnikov were troubled in that she had a lot if idealization regarding the relationships. When reality didn’t match her internal world, she suffered a lot. Eventually burning down both relationships.

Your analysis of GK is not bad in some ways, but you leave out a *lot* of info & specifics, and anyone who knew GK at NYCB, SAB, or ABT will tell you the same. (You should ask John Clifford & Merrill Ashley about Gelsey, as they both danced w/her.) She could be an incredibly mean-spirited & spiteful person - still a great ballerina, but not always the victim that your portrayal suggests. She clearly had lots of mental health problems, & could be pretty ugly to her colleagues. I was at SAB a few years after she was there, then went to dance at Dance Theatre of Harlem, & became a soloist - and even Arthur Mitchell, who had left NYCB decades before but maintained a close relationship with Balanchine, knew that Gelsey could be a piece of work. Your analysis paints her very much as a suffering put-upon victim, but she also caused some of her own problems, big time, and lots of dancers & choreographers know this.

maybe it is true, and it is very often the case with famous artists, they can have big ego, narcissistic and manipulative characters. But in the too rare videos of Gelsey Kirkland dancing here on YT, she has a magic in her way of dancing, it is very difficult to pinpoint how she does it, but she has captured my heart. Her "Dances at a gathering" with Baryshnikov, and "Nutcracker" also with Baryshnikov are the best for me, and now I have difficulty to look at those with other dancers !
