  • Today I'm sharing an exclusive 1st look at a brand new 8x10" camera from Fasquel & Co. The L'Heritage is an 8x10" folding field camera inspired by some of the most famous LF camera designs of the 20th century. Thanks to Raphael Goutte of Fasquel & Co. for touring North America earlier this year and spending some time with LFF.

Thanks for highlighting these talented, enthusiastic entrepreneurs and their compellingly interesting camera. Wishing them all the best on this venture!
It sounds like they've done their research and feel confident that they're able to produce a quality product at a price that the market can bear. Making it in 8x10 makes perfect sense. A 4x5 with the same feature set and usability will have the same number and complexity of parts.
Browsing through previous commenters, many have said something along the lines of, "That's a fair price but I can't pay that much." I am also in that group but hope that there's a long line of people who want new and can't wait to put in an order for a Fasquel!

Thanks, Matt; you've given a substantial and fair review. I have only a 4x5, but as one eager to see new, well-made products coming to our market, I'm delighted to see some young people make a serious new addition. I wish them all the best, in this crazy economic environment, and can only advise, Hang on and stick with it --we're in for rough times but the rainbow comes after the storm.

    A few thoughts.
    1. Alec Soth was standing there thinking to himself "OMG I'm touching a camera Mat Marrash once touched!" LOL
    2. That bellows range is a huge plus.
    3. While I like the handcrafted nature of their absolutely beautiful cameras I'd agree that a two person company leaves a lot of questions down the line with tech support. Maybe us Canham owners are just spoiled (so far) and are actually in the same boat in actuality ?

Any new player in the game is to be welcomed, not greeted with indifference unless there is something wrong with the product. If there's nothing wrong with it then it needs to be fully encouraged and touted around. LF at large needs encouragement to stay alive, not least new blood. Good on Matt to bring it to the fore.
The camera looks good, and it's priced cheaper than a Shen Hao or a Chamonix, and half the price of a second-hand Ebony. New prices for 8x10's are always high, unless it's cheaply made (no names mentioned). People have become spoilt with the exceptionally low second-hand prices of LF equipment since the advent of digital. That said, people need to wake up to the fact and accept that new cameras (or whatever) cost more than they used to 25 years ago for very obvious reasons. 3900 euros, or a little more in dollars, is pretty good.
New companies always start small. If they have a good product, and potential customers don't shy away from the fact they're a small company (why would you when small companies have much better quality control and support), then there is no reason for them not to succeed (given the right marketing).
    Bonne chance!

That was something I didn't get a chance to mention in the video, the service! So far they've been great to work with and are pretty fast when it comes to communication. And great point about price, at this point I think $4k is the line at which you can get a quality camera with fewer tradeoffs.

I have looked at the Old units available , I was seriously considering the cameras made in Italy , but they have a rather heavy build , Stenopeika , unless you're buying the Hyperlight unit. As a camera par excellence , to use in good weather , and with care for special Heritage productions , and as a Selling point ... I think these units based upon the Deardorff design are an amazing value. I like the units with the highly figured woods , that have contrasts , and the Bleu , bellows is sublime with bright brass works , oozes sensual competence and an earthiness of Nature ....that cold manufacturing has lost. Yes , I am the Son of Cabinetmakers ...so I LOVE fine wood. I am also supportive of these young brave men , Godspeed !! I am 62 years young .. and LFF fan ♥ MERRY CHRISTMAS everyone .... 🙏🏻

Drawing inspiration from the Deardorf is a good move and I think the price is quite good actually. It's the same price or less of a minty Deardorf, so quite fair. Consider a new Chamonix 8x10's current pricing, although Chamonix have established their quality reputation already. No doubt things will evolve for this fledgling project and I wish any new film/traditional/alternative process photography project success. We need to keep using film and paper and chemistry somehow, and new cameras are a must. It's very good looking too.

Its about the price of a Chamonix, so I think they’re not too far off, as people are clearly buying those. Copying the Deardorff bellows and approximate feature set while paring down the weight was a great move, too. I rarely buy new cameras, so I’m not a potential customer (though I’m eyeing the Intrepid 8x10 which is in a _completely_ different ballpark). I wish them luck!

Very excited about this new camera on the market, Mat! And yes, I dropped a substantial amount of money for my Chamonix 810V (cost about the same at the time as the L'Heritage now), so I would have spent it on this camera as well if it was a possibility at the time. And I'm very curious about their focusing screens, I would consider buying one if they made one that fits my Chamonix. I'm keeping an eye on their website for groundglass info and examples. In the meantime, thanks so much for your hard work to provide us with all this valuable content, I wish you happy holidays and all the best in the new year. May it be a good new year for you!

Gorgeous cameras and as a Chicagoland native, I have to give a seal of approval to see Deardorff as their inspiration for the design. I look forward to seeing where this company goes. One of these days I would like to add another 8x10 camera to my arsenal that has a few more movements than my beloved Kodak 2-D. I've kind of been on the lookout for a Deardorff because of the Chicago heritage but maybe I can check out a modern take on the Deardoff design instead!

Matt I'm kinda new to large format, but not to photography. With 35 years of collecting and repairing analogue film cameras everything from 35mm and medium format, and with just over 900 cameras in my collection - so I can say I know some stuff when it comes to cameras, but only having purchased a Horseman 45FA 2 weeks ago I'm a bit green with LFP. Now my background as both an industrial product designer and carpenter, I might consider taking that kind of money and try to fabricate and build my own here at home in the wood shop. Mind you I think for me it isn't that much of a stretch to try something like that, so I'm probably an outlier in that regards, but my ultimate sweet spot would be to build a hand crafted 5x8, not enough of them were ever made, and are still very limited by those who do make them. Thanks, and cheers. Happy New Year.

Always nice to see young entrepreneurs constructing such fine cameras. I have been looking at these cameras for some weeks now and yesterday I finally found the price. Even if it is a high end product the price is rather steep for a (not yet) well known and established camera manufacturer. Perhaps a cheaper model with less possibilities would have been better to launch their brand and then gradualy step up to a higher end model. But hey, that's just my opninion.

one more piece of feedback on the camera, interchangeable bellows, and a different format back, aka similar to the Linhof adaptive plates on their 5x7" (just add this adapta-board, and the ground glass of your chosen format,8x10/ 5x7/4x5/6x12\6x9 roll film); Also at this 'early stage' suggest GRAFFLOK bars on the back, ie an international fit!, makes this system agnostic to holders, roll film backs, Plate holders, etc. as well as a rotating back, like Linhof's it is easier to change orientation (without a chance of damaging the ground-glass).

Come on, 4000 euro doesn't seam like a lot of money for something handcrafted like this and it's even a product that you can use and keep for decades. If you compare with many other things this it's actually a steal. Just look at the Japanese market for handcrafted things, or basically any genre of handcrafted things. Have a look at watches, knifes, music instruments and we start talking about over expensive things. And compared to what electronic 'throw away after 3 years gadgets' like phones, cameras and consumer products cost today, 4000 euro is quite little. I know many people that uses 2000-4000 euros a month on gadgets of all sorts. - But nice and interesting channel👍 I just found it. I would properly be into this if I had the time.
