  • A recent work from the Japanese composer "Cordia". According to the composer, the piece was written as a practice exercise in working with sequences in music. It includes several stylistic elements from piano pieces of the romantic period, and many passages are reminiscent of Mendelssohn and Chopin.
The piece is indeed wonderfully characterised: Lyrical episodes are followed by moments of quiet repose and contemplation, which in turn are followed by passages of great lyrical and expressive beauty, leading to a dramatic climax before the work returns to its opening material and closes in a quiet, restful manner. It provides a very enjoyable playing experience, and I hope it will start being included in concert programs soon.
The original performance of the piece, by the composer, may be found at • Romance in D major - O...

    Performance Notes:
    1. Played with permission from the composer
    2. I confess somewhat sheepishly that I did make some very tiny changes to the composer's score - these do not deviate from the score very much, and mostly involve thickening out a chord here and there, exploiting some passing notes to enrich the melodic fabric of Cordia's writing, and in one case I used a dominant 7th in root position rather than in 1st inversion as scored.
I hope you will enjoy it, and thank you as always for listening 🙂!
