I would really like to see a video on managing the Velvet bean(Mucuna). I have used it as a dominant ground cover and have also found it to be troublesome climbing on higher strata plants and trees. So, please consider showing how you work with it.
Thank you for sharing your experiences. Do you know of a bean or other plants I can grow here in semi-arid, Mediterranean climate of southern California that will fill the same role of the velvet beans you are growing? We have 8 months hot dry season and 10 inches or 25 centimeters of rain in a good year.
I think its good that you are keeping the ants. Killing them can bring about unintended consequences like removing a pest deterrent or even allowing space for a pest ant species to move in unchallenged.

Chris, with a little irrigation the black velvet beans should be perfect for you.
