      The idea of putting a suspension Fork on a bicycle does not excite anyone. The extra weight will not compensate when you're climbing. Most people don't race gravel bicycles, they're just for recreation and having a good time so most people won't care. I would far prefer to see a good rigid fork with a Redshift suspension stem , it would be far lighter. The fact is I have not seen Redshift products coming on any Factory bikes which is a bit shocking considering how good they are.

    • @HollyBoni
      @HollyBoni 5 років тому +5

      @UA-cam User Well, kind of. Look at the Salsa Cutthroat for example. It has suspension corrected geometry, you can run a 100mm fork in it. It can clear 29 x 2.4 tyres. It's a drop bar MTB, which a lot of people will say is dumb. But I think it has it's place. If you don't have huge mountains where you live, you prefer drop bars, and you want slightly more than a gravel bike because you want to do longer rides on harsher terrain I think it's perfect.
      But this thing? What's the point of a 40mm suspension fork that weighs as much as a 100mm one? The thing will bottom out before it does something. I'm a 100% sure you could easily bottom it out on a rougher dirt road. I think a 2.2-2.3 tyre has almost as much "travel". Then we have the 42mm tyres... Just why. I don't know about the clearances on this thing, but that 42 looks tight at the back.
      Overall I think a rigid fork with bigger tyres would give you almost as much compliance.
      And then there is the price... 2300 pounds, for which you get freaking Apex and an aluminium frame. Look at what kind of XC bike could you get for that price from a direct to consumer brand. Or you could get a better rigid gravel bike with bigger tyres. (And I say all this as a gravel bike owner)

With two wheelsets for the gravel bike, I am covering wide range of distances on road/mild off road, and mild off road / light single tracks. • @tychay
    @tychay 5 років тому

    what is the weight? My Cannondale Slate is under 20lbs (granted without a dropper post). Of course the Slate has a road bike geometry and gives up 10mm of front fork travel so it is a different bike altogether.
    The Lauf Grit fork is similar travel to the Slate, the Shockstop stem and Specialized bike give up another 5-10mm, so it is looking like the 25mm travel seems to be some sort of sweet spot. I guess the geometry changes too much on drop bars at a certain point so we are now seeing the ideal range for front suspension on gravel.
    There is a lot that is starting to coalesce here with this niche. It looks like road plus clearance is desired (stealing the drop stays from the OPEN to keep the rear tucked in), some sort of light front suspension, opional dropper in the rear (something that was almost a joke when Cannondale spec’d it for the Slates frame), splayed drop handlebars, 1x drivetrain, hydraulic disc, and using an SRAM 22 left lever to actuate an internally routed dropper).
    Like to see more and different, I think this one may be a bit niche (too heaven, the dropper may not be as practical, not sure about the geo or the lack of 700c), but if it does well, I’ll be happy.

    • @JeremyLawrence-imajez
      @JeremyLawrence-imajez 5 років тому

      Interesting thought, but probably not. Gravel bikes like most new forms of bikes came from racing. Folk were racing longer and longer distances on CX bikes, so the CXs were made more comfy with fatter tyres and slacker angles and thus gravel bikes were born. More comfort over long distances will usually equate to more speed as you get less battered and tired. Plus they will roll faster over the rougher terrain.
      Though if tubeless tyres and the lower pressure you can run had come to CX/roadies some years sooner, then they would not have needed as fat a tyre.

The fork is way too heavy, the dropper should have the lever in the cockpit and the drivetrain could be a 2x11 MTB one with a 40 tooth big plate for the road and a 30 tooth small plate for off-road. And the dropper, I'm not shure if a Dropper is more suitabble than a flex post like the one Canyon has. For me, the only improvements a gravel bike would need from the MTB world is the suspension and the wider range drivetrains.

      Well, I thought the job of a suspension fork was to help you on rougher terrain. I'm all about weird stuff. Salsa Cutthroat with a 100mm fork? Bring it on! But I don't see the point of a 40mm suspension fork that weighs as much as a 100mm one. If you actually need suspension, you need more than 40mm. You could bottom this thing out on a rough dirt road.
      If you want a slightly more comfortable ride, bigger tyres are a better option IMO.
      When my 43mm tyre bottoms out I think that's about half as much travel as this thing has... 😁

    There's only one thing sillier than carbon fibre. And that's suspension.

    I'm looking forward to when they stop all these silly changes and start to focus on reducing price and competing for it. There still isn't an affordable carbon bike with a good groupset.

    Guys using trigged as a joke is really poor form, the term triggered is already ridiculed throughout popular culture, PTSD is a real issue and there are people who experience triggers and making jokes like this is to their expense.

      You were triggered.

      It's a phrase that's now in common parlance, and regularly used - seriously or jokingly - to describe feelings of upset spanning the entire spectrum from deadly serious to completely trivial. It's no more of a threat to people taking PTSD seriously than, say, describing a bike as 'insane' is to broader mental health issues. You're clever enough to understand the difference based on context, and so is everyone else.
