Yes please. More in depth, maybe touch on modulation. Also, the settings for the chord track, how to constrain the range of notes (some of my vst's require chord input within a certain range which the chord track regularly strays out of) , etc. 👍🏻
I think that knowing music theory can give you a lot of freedom when it comes to music creation but this is an excellent way for people that are not familiar with music theory to be creative as well! Well done Dom! Great presentation as always!
Iro! That's exactly the point! Learning music theory is always a great idea but if you don't you don't need to be limited when you want to create the music you have in your head :)
@Aziri Alain I couldn't agree with your statement. You're might be limited to music theory as well and your head won't give you something very interesting if you have 0 creativity. Speaking of myself, I love composing without even thinking in what key I am, for instance. You may even come up with an idea, tone or melody in your head and then help yourself with the arrangement using theory or tools. Furthermore, when you don't feel that way but still have to make music required, then musical background as well as modern tools may help you out a lot. Sorry if I get you wrong. But of course just mindlessly dragging chords without a good sense or what so ever are doubtfully gonna lead you to something good.
Definitely, the more theory I studied, the better my ideas became, the better my ideas became, the more I wanted to study. If taught or learnt in a practical way, theory doesn't have to be boring or difficult (I've heard others describe it as this). Instead it is like a door opening to a more fascinating musical dimension.
I wish someone would explain how to use this in the way an absolute beginner can follow. This is the facility I most want to use but so far have totally failed to get the chord track to trigger an instrument selection. There must be something glaringly obvious that I just can't see!!! Any advice would be gratefully received.
@@SwanSycorax I don't know if you still need this as the comment was made 1 year ago, but basically under the name of the chord track you have three buttons and on their right a selection field. By default is at "Use monitored track". If you click there you will see all the other VST tracks you have on the project in this way you can select which track will have the chords triggered by the chord track. I hope this helpful if not to you anymore to somebody else passing by :)
More on Chord Track is always welcome. For example, a focus on the many voicing settings that are available in Cubase, and not often explained. Thanks!
Been a jazz drummer and guitarist (ear player) all my life and at 55 yrs old am thoroughly enjoying FINALLY learning so many things for the first time simply by watching Dom's videos. So thankful!
One or a couple of in-depth videos on Chord Track (and Chord Pads) would be highly appreciated! As far as I am concerned, your point re getting creative and finding progressions one’s muscle memory wouldn’t let discover different, more interesting options is absolutely correct! And getting ideas for points to start using tools like that beyond the points one ends up just playing around with it would be both, helpful and inspiring. That said, yes, please share more on this (and your experience), thank you very much in advance!
Thank you so, so, SO much for this segment. I'm a songwriter but not highly proficient in any instrument. I hear the complete chords in my head and spend hours on end finding them on the piano. I'm just about to join the modern world and buy Cubase and all the regalia-- and now I can't wait!!! I'm binge watching your tutorials because they're so well presented and your enthusiasm is contagious. Thank you again!
Really liked the video thanks! I never took music theory and for some reason there's not a great manual for cubase. You're helping me so much after years of stalling
Massive thanks Dom for this video..I’m having problems with my hands so can’t reach chords I used too do and was lost using chord assistance in cubase this had helped massively..
This is just the tip of the iceberg! I just love when you have your chords down, how a instrument track can follow the chords or scale(s) and you can just solo away! Or easily transpose the midi that you get from the media bay (patterns and stuff) and how they easily transpose to you chordtrack. Even creating harmony voicings is a breeze using chord track! So yeah, do another video and talk about stuff like that and the stuff I haven't found or figured out yet!
You are saving people money with this one. I posed the question on Instagram about using the midi packs because it’s a flood of adds on UA-cam about them. Grateful that you took the time to make this video. Writing a whole song with chord pads would be neat to see!! Thank you again!!!!
Thank you very much! More in depth tutorials about this would be amazing :) especially content on using the chord track to control whole projects would be fantastic
Would be interesting to make a video about Chords Track as it relate to a string ensemble arrangement (violins I, violins2, violas, cellos) or a string quartet. Dom, why don't you give a shot? That would be very useful.
Oh my gosh Dom....It's nearly 4am in the morning and I've only just found this !!!!. This is fantastic !!!!. LOVE that Vibrant EP plug in. Yes please to more in depth chord tutorials !!!!. Thanks again, Great work !!!!
what i think is very underated in cubase is the chorder midi plugin! when you play those preset chords also with one button of your midi controller and then train your ear with single notes too match those chords then you really make easy progress to understand these kind of stuff! good work dom!
I have been following you for a while, love what you are doing. I to have Cubase you are a great resource . Keep it coming. Thanks for being there. By the way I'm a P-funk All-star
Don't forget that it will also tell what chords you are playing on the Keyboard. If you don't have music theory and you play a chord that you think " this sounds great" but don't know what it is, the chord assistant will tell you what chord you are playing.
Thanks for this explanation! Even if you do have a small amount of music theory under your belt, it really helps to have these tools to play with options!
And the guy asking if we want more on the subject. We don’t want more we NEED more !! I think this the the 40th time I’m thinking to myself that I missing the point with this chord echosystem. Andy made some, Greg made some on this subject and Dom will do the very last work we need for feeling definitely fine on cubase chord track. Hey steinberg, don’t forget to double his salary
Thank you Dom!!! I’m learning a lot about Cubase thanks to you. I am very very veeery thankful as it is really hard to find good Cubase tutorials. UA-cam is full of FL Studio and Ableton, but there’s not much about Cubase. Please keep doing this!! You are doing an amazing job.
Dom man you're amazing. My music theory got more enhanced and being a drummer with no keyboard background it was tough, but you made it really easy for me to compose now. Thanks a lot man.
Hi Dom, yet another very informative video. Thank you. Please can you do a video on the in depth features of the chord pads especially how to add arpeggios. Chris
@12:04 Using "Assign Pad from MIDI Input" (by right-clicking on a pad) I've found that the chord pad feature can cope with basic, diatonic chords patterns, but it doesn't play back correctly when you try anything more complicated, which is a big shame. So, you input a chord, & it plays back correctly the 1st time, but then after playing a different pad, then returning to the original pad, it is now playing a completely different set of notes that it was outputting originally.
Yes please Dom..... more in-depth videos about the chord track/pads etc.... question though.... is there a way to control or automate the voicing and tensions?... I have an Expressive E.... and I thought this may work in real time perhaps? Many thanks Dom.... gret informative videos as usual...
And again: Your tutorials are so much better and more musical than the Cubase tutorials that I bought for a lot of money. Keep it up! The advertisement for midi loops was funny ... ;-)
Hi Dom , great video, thanks a lot, there is a way to stay in scale and key , but i mean only the notes of an scale and key ? in that way you learn what notes belong to an specific key so you never go out of key in a melodie.
Fantastic Video! Found your videos a few days ago man and have been watching them like crazy as they have been super helpful with your tips but also the way you present the videos have been amazing :)
I'm rather new to Cubase and to me it is a complex DAW. I'm used to FL Studio mostly. Now I start to find some regular time to play with Cubase so anything in depth would be cool. I know about that feature since quite some time but seeing it used practically is nice to say the least. I feel it difficult sometimes to really assess the value of a feature without having a clear demo.
Awesome! Amazing share, thanks so much for this! I am a Cubase user and totally suck at music theory. It really saddens me that I don't know how to play, so this is certainly going to help me... I hope.
I've been trying to work on chord progressions and learning the circle of fifths for a while now, and this video just made it all click suddenly. Ive been using Bandlab, because when I first tried cubase I had almost no knowledge of what I was doing and it was super intimidating. But if you make more awesome tutorials like this, I may reconsider. It definitely seems like a more comprehensive and powerful tool for music composition.
Great work my friend ! Happy New Year by the way. Please expand more in this subject. For example, use of Arpeggiator or if the chords can be rhythmically, like in my Yamaha PSR-SX950 keyboard/arranger. I think my arranger could trigger those chords in Cubase.
Great Tutorial but would like to have more information on the pattern players work and how they adapt to the chord track, especially now Cubase 11 scale assistant is now in the mix.

It's possible but the most realistic way is to use divisi, where each part of a chord is played by a different instrument, as in real life
Cubase 13 is the King now ❤ love it
