Wow. Turned out great. That charcoal powder looks dangerous.😅 i would make the biggest mess. That's one producr I am not anxious to try. 😅. Have a great weekend.
I had some charcoal powder, and it was everywhere when it got here. The stuff turned out to be a huge, expensive pain in the romp. I tossed it in the garbage. I have used Krylon Workable Fixitive for years! It's awesome! Your wolf turned out awesome!
Lol! That's basically the sam experience I had so far! I am definitely not liking the powder right now! Thank you for taking the time to watch and leave a comment!
Another great video, thanks Amy. Love that you said you didn’t know it was going to work at the beginning. It’s reassuring to know that an experienced artist feels that insecurity when trying something new.
Great job. A little tip I learned in a class . Break your willow charcoal and use it on its side to get coverage over a large area quickly. The blend it with piece of cheese cloth to even it out. You have inspired me to get some more charcoal supplies. Enjoying your channel. Hope your health issues get worked out soon.
I've given some thought to trying pastels on canvas. I think I would use a canvas board and I would, for sure, coat it with clear gesso. Sennelier fixative does not seem to darken the pastels as much, if at all. I look forward to any of your experiments. The charcoal on canvas is a huge success.
Go for it! It sounds awesome! Although I do have the sennelier soft pastel fixative and it does darken some. But not as bad as some of the others. It's my favorite for sketchbooks but still I don't like it on my full pieces. Thank you for taking the time to watch and leave a comment!
This work evolved beautifully. You gave a great demo of the various materials and how they perform. Your finished product is wonderful Amy. I enjoyed your video!
I love that you did the eyes first! When I don’t do the eyes early on it drives me crazy! lol! It just really creeps me out to have blank empty eyes staring at me from a semi finished piece.😂
Not a mistake you learnt that it's not suitable for dark dark areas. So now you pivot & remember you have it for a future project or could use it with the kids outside
I think you did a great job! Spectra Fix fixative doesn’t darken the color on pastel paintings as per my experience. You have to spray it in a fine mist so I usually transfer it to a fine mist bottle. Maybe some paint brushes for charcoal from either Creative Mark or Trekell would be fun. I have them and for certain parts of the artwork it makes it easier. Very good video ❤
Wanted to let you know I was watching Lachri last week, she uses a fixative called Spectra Fix Degas spray, does not change color. She puts it in a fine mist sprayer, said bottle it comes in leaves droplets. The video was pastel, lady bug on mushroom.
I have it and unfortunately it does change the color. I have a video up here some where on my channel where I show the change of color with it. it's not as noticeable as some sprays, but it's still noticeable. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Hi, Amy. Wondering if you have tried compressed charcoal; it is VERY black, but doesn't erase as easily as ordinary charcoal. (But perhaps the pencils recommended by Joel are compressed charcoal?) And yes, it is very messy. I would recommend a drop cloth and a box of baby wipes close at hand. Charcoal was my first art medium (after crayons), and I used to take life drawing at The Art Students' League. I would smile a bit when we had a new model who would walk across to the model stand in bare feet. They had no idea how black their feet would be. Flip-flops next time. The League is almost 150 years old, so has 1-1/2 centuries of charcoal dust ground into the floor boards. The place is great - so old guard. Love the wolf. I think it is my totem animal.
All good! No worries! My video totally bombed at this time of posting. Kinda wish I had just put it up at the regular time... oh well! Thank you for taking the time to watch and leave a comment!
Really enjoyed this video! You did a fantastic job with the charcoal. I would never have guessed you never really used it before! Beautifully done! Thanks for another great video. See you next time! Have a fabulous week. Hope your class is going well. (don't know if it's finished yet or not...)
Ill bet a mask can be a game changer for charcoal. I was working in it about 6 years ago or so and the dust kept making me sneeze. One or two of them came without warning and there went a days worth of work - scattered into the air! Now I laugh but then it was traumatic! It sounds like your experience has been so much better than mine, even with a leaky charcoal powder jar. That is really easy to make, btw....take a stick of willow or whatever charcoal you want and run it back and forth on sand paper. Before I would begin, I would take a piece of printer paper and fold it in half and that is where I would collect the dust. It's super easy to pour into a small container that way. Love the wolf, btw!! I had no clue anyone used canvas but it makes sense because you do need a little bit of tooth.
I have walked away from charcoal so many times because of the mess. Fixative is the way to go. I will be getting that soon. Oh, the music in the background reminded me of an old movie. I was waiting for your husband to swoop in and claim his forever love for you. 😂😂😂 Thank you very much for sparking another way to live what I have.
Wow you’ve reached ten thousand’ I’m so thrilled for you. I am wondering if hair spray can be used as a fixident? I like seeing your different mediums. I know nothing about out most of them. Have a great day.
I know some people do but it's not archival and you have to worry about yellowing and whatnot. Thank you for taking the time to watch and leave a comment!
That piece turned out so well and it was interesting seeing you try something different & unfamiliar and solve a few problems that arose (I guess you won't be reaching for the charcoal powder again any time soon?). Hope you start to get some positive resolution on the health issues in the near future. Thanks for the video, take care and kind regards, Brian.
Everything I know about charcoal in one video, by studio wildlife, I think you might find him really interesting on different techniques as you like to do sometimes realistic art and are enjoying this new medium. This may help you branch out. and be less frustrated.
I’ve been having a lot of health things too, for quite a while. Sometimes I may disappear or nearly disappear from the comments. It’s not that I am not watching or supporting you. Just that typing can be too much at the moment. Just wanted you to know.💜💜💜
I am so sorry to hear that! I hope things get focused out for you and you arr back to your normal routine before you know it! Sending you virtual hugs and well wishes!
I’m so glad you shared this with us! You were learning and teaching us at the same time!

Fabulous idea to use the black pan pastel! It’s so smooth and luxurious!
It made SUCH a difference!
This is gorgeous. Id buy it/a print of it n proudly hang it on my wall.

Thank you! Cheers!
Hi Amy what a fantastic picture. Thanks for letting us learn with you. Take care. ❤
This looks so good, I should really give charcoal another shot ☺☺
I havent watched it yet but going by all the other videos of yours I’ve watched you couldn’t make disastrous art of you tried ❤
It turned out very good! I have been watching Joe Pilch too. He has an interesting technique and doesn't he use acrylic paint as well on his work?
Wow! Your charcoal work turned out fabulous. Been thinking of tinkering with charcoal for a while now ❤
Thinking of you and sending love, caring and healing vibes!💜💜💜
Great video! Love your painting!
Thanks, this is something I've been curious about
Amy, just an amazing work, I like your videos so much and you are so talented and funny ❤
Beautiful piece! ❤
Thank you! 😊
I love that you did the eyes first! When I don’t do the eyes early on it drives me crazy! lol! It just really creeps me out to have blank empty eyes staring at me from a semi finished piece.😂
I feel th exact same way! Lol!
Not a mistake you learnt that it's not suitable for dark dark areas. So now you pivot & remember you have it for a future project or could use it with the kids outside
Lol! I made such a mess with it! I'm still cleaning it up! Thank you for taking the time to watch and leave a comment!

Beautiful,I just want to stare at the eyes ❤️ do you gesso all your canvass, not sure still learning
It depends if I want to use a really smooth surface or if I want to use oil paints! Hope that helps!
@@winterwoodsstudio thanks so much 😍
Beautiful drawing. But i'm biased as i love wolves ;) Thank you for sharing this, even if I'm not at all into charcoal. Too messy for me... LOL

Lol! That would have been lovely! Maybe next time! 😉
I absolutely would have knocked over the charcoal powder! 😮😅😂

I'm so glad Nessa! Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment...

I love watching Mad Charcoal, but I’m sure most have seen him.
Just find you here , would you please explain how to transfer sketch on canvas, thanks.

Would you mind if I ask how your shoulder is doing now ? I’m considering surgery on the shoulder of my painting arm.

Sense it is your first time. Why did you choose canvas instead of paper?
Hi she worked with charcoal years ago but just getting back in to it again.
She was experimenting with canvas here.
