@@Attmay When I first heard the report about Buffy Sainte Marie, and her ancestral claims, I was thinking exactly the same thing. I am in my mid-60s. Being that age, I am (of course) a fan of music from the era of Buffy Sainte-Marie and all the great 1960s and 1970s pop, folk, and rock music. But my dad was a big fan of the 1930s big bands (Tommy Dorsey, Jimmy Dorsey, Glenn Miller, Artie Shaw, etc.), while Al Jolson and Bing Crosby were his favorite singers. I enjoyed listening to that music, and, indeed, do still listen to it every so often on the various online music services. I don’t think Buffy Sainte Marie totally darkened her face. Maybe she did use some darkening makeup, but I’ve had several Italian American friends, especially female, with dark enough features that they could indeed have passed themselves off as Native American/ First Nations to someone like me who is not Native American/ First Nations. I would love to hear Buffy’s real story: maybe in the early years assumptions were made that Buffy was Native American/First Nations, and she didn’t do anything to correct it. As the CBC report indicated, several of her family members had written to newspapers, trying to correct it, but the newspapers ignored it. My speculation (and it is purely speculation on my part) is that in Buffy Sainte Marie’s earlyyears of being a public figure, or somewhere along the line, someone told her she looked Native American/ First Nations. So she ran with it, became technically adopted by a tribe, or at least a family within a tribe (“community”), and has clung to that all these years. Al Jolson, as you correctly alluded to, did deliberately perform in black face. Allowing for the fact that Buffy Sainte Marie’s Italian ancestry may have made her darker than the average white person, I am not going to say that she “did an Al Jolson.” At the moment, that hasn’t come out yet! I must admit after I first watched the CBC Fifth Estate report here on UA-cam, I immediately said to myself something like Al Jolson did it in the 1920s and now it is catching up with Buffy Sainte Marie in the 2020s. The only pass I’m giving her is that from looking at her hands, they appear to be darker than the average white person, again explainable with Italian American heritage. Al Jolson’s hands were obviously white, or he was wearing gloves, so you could not tell. I believe that Al Jolson said that he was using black face in honor of (and out of respect for) the black people- something like that. Maybe he felt it, but, to me, it seemed very flimsy. Al Jolson either mostly had no standing in the black community. Or the black community had a feeling of disdain (or even contempt) towards him. Eddie Cantor, another American white Jewish performer in the 1930s also used black face. The problem and the blessing for Buffy Sainte Marie is that she is or was held in such high regard by the Native American/ First Nations community. Perhaps if she were to “come clean”, I get the feeling that she would probably say something like she had such high regard for the Native American/First Nations community. @@poemaboutthemanfromnantucket I know that “Buffy” is a nickname, and remember Buffy on Family Affair:)
If Taylor Swift could write something this beautiful I'd listen to her.
Ironic that the show is called To Tell the Truth.
Oh the Irony.
What a talent! One of the greats.
This is the kind of women we should honor
instead of bimbos like Kim Kardashian or Melania Trump.
Melania Trump is no bimbo. She speaks six languages and is the power behind the throne of Donald Trump. If it weren't for Melania, Trump would be playing golf and enjoying his life instead of sacrificing his peace, his treasure, his energy, his time and risking his life to save America.
Neither one of those women has flagrantly lied about her ancestry. Both of those women are exactly what they present themselves to be: women who enjoy the glamorous life.
Bluffy Ain't A Cree, on the other hand, is a fraud.
Buffy should've been on Believe It Or Not...
Real Native American beauty 😍
She's not a Native American, she's white, says so on her birth certificate.
She's a beautiful Italian woman.
Thank you both. I just saw the news. I can’t believe i got fooled again! First that Mexican-American Sacheen Littlefeather, now this Italian American Buffy tsk tsk
How funny that this program was brought to you by margarine--the fake butter! LOL
How ironic. She has no idea how to tell the truth.
Probably she started a Schtick to get press then by the time she became famous she couldn’t stop it. U have to agree very talented musician. At least that’s not fake.
She told as much truth as you are entitled to.
@@iVenge She built an entire career on lies. She landed her job on SESAME STREET *only* because the makers of the show thought she was Cree. She's a thief.
@@iVengeShe scammed an entire nation and stole money and awards from real native women…so no, I’d say the public is owed a real explanation and an apology
@@chilo8187 She owes nothing. She didn’t steal anything from anyone. She was given things based upon her talent and actions, that you wrongly assume would have been given to other people just because of their race. How silly.
To Tell The Truth.
Buffy St Marie: Instructions unclear
the last song is so sad ....
Wow,what a great memory. This is ironical when Buffy is retiring from performing this year. I read her biography,it was really a great read.
Best of luck in your retirement Buffy....This Canadian loves your music so much. 🇨🇦❤️🇺🇸📻🎵
I agree. Buffy Sainte-Marie was so pretty here ❤
Just in time, as her ruse has been exposed.
🧡🇨🇦🧡
Peggy Cass at 5:50 beat CBC by 56 years. She was on to it - “the REAL one is from Massachusetts.” Yep. Orson Bean at 2:45 was also on to something by the “married an Italian” joke.
Wow.
oh the irony . this show hits so different now.
I always followed her
Her Wikipedia page says she was born in Canada, so #3 was right, although through videos, in 2020, I knew it was #1 UPDATE: Her Wikipedia page says the following "Buffy Sainte-Marie was born at the New England Sanitarium and Hospital in Stoneham, Massachusetts" She is still alive, and on February 20, 2023, she celebrated her 82nd birthday.
I don't think the panel asked where they were born, they asked where they were from.
@SunnyDaze-uq8ed lick me.
St. Marie was *not* born in Canada, no matter what her Wiki says. Her birth certificate says Massachusetts.
@@retriever19golden55 You are right, and Wikipedia does have her as being born in Massachusetts
"Buffy Sainte-Marie was born at the New England Sanitarium and Hospital in Stoneham, Massachusetts" (Wikipedia)
@@retriever19golden55 How really cares where she is from. Buffy Sainte-Marie was so pretty here ❤
Why were the other two ladies of Spanish last names? they were chosen because they looked native and that is because all Native Americans all persons of Latin descent are Native Americans.
The woman from Mexico only has a Spanish last name, her first name seems to be Indigenous
Some natives in the southern US have Spanish names, just as some natives in Canada have French names. There were instances of intermarriage since contact.
@@fairieale She was from New Mexico, and she said that she was Apache.
Lovely
Buffys music is timeless, and her beauty's ageless.
Because she claimed not to know when she was born?
Oh, she's aged, alright.
I didn’t know she wrote that beautiful song.
Its because it sounds like other songs. Not long now before we discover she plagiarized the songs along with her identity.
@@Arewal851 Did she really?? Do you have a source on the plagiarism?
Is #3 photographer Vicky Racimo better known as Victoria Racimo the actress?
Well, now you've probably found out that she's a huge liar.
@@Mousehansen It doesn´t matter..!! Buffy Sainte-Marie was so pretty here ❤
Wow, so she was even famous in the Soviet Union?
@@zxyatiywariii8 yes
Интересно! Но я рада что вы знаете теперь.
But, how is it possible the people didn't recognise Buffy anyway?
The public were so used to obvious fakes from movies and TV shows that somebody who put more effort into such chicanery could have easily fooled them and did.
the embodiment of "Quiet Power"
The vibrato was a deliberate way to position her voice. I always found it a bit annoying.
Turns out, all three ladies were "imposters"!!
🙂🙂🙂🙂😷😷😷😷😷♥️♥️♥️♥️
Margarine! Help!
well, that's a show she should never have been on, having lied throughout her whole career. She's an American Italian, not native.
What a missed opportunity. If only she would have told the truth.
hahaha....the other two are imposters. Actually one ONE is the imposter.
And the came George Santos ...
