Still belly laughing my way through these episodes. Gents, you're bringing history to life in such a fun way, this is awesome!

Really enjoyed this - thank you. I might have to go back and reread LOTR with this in mind - I used to reread it around once a year in my teens and 20s, but it's been over 20 years, so it's due a revisit.

Too much ado in the beginning about Tolkien haters. No need to justify a Tolkien episode, he's a perfect subject for this show and I can't emphasize enough how enthusiastically I played this episode the instant I saw it.
Frankly I prefer not to acknowledge the existence of Tolkien haters at all, a rabble of mindless orcs, the lot of them.

It's a shame more people don't realize that it's possible to enjoy both Tolkien and Virginia Woolf.

I find it bizarre that they felt the need to spend so long justifying their decision to talk about Tolkien on a popular history podcast. I guess I'm out of touch with the hate he receives from critics.

I don’t understand that either. If people hate Tolkien, it’s their problem, not ours.

I'll say something different, which is that I found it "useful". I've heard that some people despise Tolkien, but I fortunately haven't ever met one in person. It's good to be reminded of opinions outside of my silo.

Gil Galad was an elven king,
Of him the poets sadly sing,
The last who’s realm was fair and free,
Between the mountains and the sea

His sword was long his lance was keen,
His shining helm afar was seen,
The countless stars of heaven's field,
were mirrored in his silver shield.
But long ago he rode away,
And where he dwelleth none can say,
for in to darkness fell his star
in Mordor where the shadows are.

The endless days draw to a final close
      As ebon night steals in as it must;
His soul is carrion for the crows
His dreams such things as dust.

Will you please create a podcast on the Pendle witches, a very interesting story, that could probably benefit from some unpicking. Tolkien was influenced by Pendle (misty mountain, lonely mountain) and I'm pretty certain that the withes and stories of this area (where I live) surely will have influenced his stories.

From what I've heard Amazon doesn't have any rights to any of Tolkien's writing about the 2nd age and yet set their series in the 2nd age. So everything that happens in the series will by necessity be am original fabrication.

There is no mistaking the Catholic theology in Tolkien.
It's slightly hidden in the hobbit and the lord of the rings, but the simarillion makes it plain and obvious.
What makes it great is it's moral way if story telling and how good and evil are put out without ambiguousness without being a child's story.

I don’t understand this weird deference to people who don’t like Tolkien and haven’t read him. Why are you trying to convince them? What’s the point of trying to please these people? If they’re not interested, they can just skip this episode. I am not interested in The Beatles, so I will not listen to that episode.
