TARA is a fully enlightened Buddha and out of the deepest compassion she manifests as the goddess TARA the Swift Liberator to protect us from our fears and outer dangers. She appears in 21 different aspects.
The main Tara is the Green Tara with her peaceful mantra OM TARE TUTTARE TURE SOHA. While the peaceful Green Tara mantra is very well known, not everybody is familiar with TARA's wrathful mantra OM NAMA TARE NAMO HARE HUNG HARE SOHA. The ancient text describe that in order to protect the beings big inner and outer obstacles and especially from catching epidemic diseases she manifests in her wrathful aspect. When both the peaceful mantra and the wrathful mantra of TARA are combined it is said to be a very powerful tool to protect us from catching any illnesses.
From a Buddhist point of view chanting mantras can help us to purify and transform our busy, disturbed and confused mind into a calm and peaceful state of mind and to make us be more aware of our true nature. Buddha has taught 2500 years ago, that every sentient being carries the buddha nature - our true source of love and compassion. Deep inside we are all perfect beings. The only thing that keeps us away to connect fully with this beautiful nature is our own negative emotions, such as greed, hatred, ignorance, pride, and jealousy.
