Howdy from Southeast Texas! As someone that has been harvesting Oysters (Recreational) and Shucking my own for nearly fifty years… Oysters are definitely worth Saving. Clean water is a must. I have no idea how to go about cleaning up our rivers that feed into the Bays. The Trinity River watershed just to name one, has been contaminated for Decades. To the point that there have been published Consumption Bans on numerous fish species taken from the River and Lakes… again for Decades. And I’d bet most anglers know nothing about the fish they’ve been eating for a years. And all that Crud washes down to the bays. Great Video! Cheers!
Changes can already be seen on the Magothy this year - Dolphins spotted many times this summer, sea grasses growing, better water visibility. It may not be from the oysters, but the combined efforts to improve water quality are working.
In the game of bay conservation there is just no silver bullet remedy...but recently i've seen conflicting reports on the recent health of the bay and from direct observation over the past couple years i definitely think there's been some modest improvement. The trick is to maintain this trajectory.
Triploid are bred almost exclusively for aquaculture purposes. They tend to grow faster, but do not generally reproduce. Diploid oysters are natural breeders and are preferable for restoration efforts because we want them to reproduce! Great question.
I lived in Louisiana for a few years. The Cajun 's thought me how the look for oysters along the bays & it tributaries. When I returned to the Eastern Shore DEL-MAR-VA Peninsula I used that experience. I found oysters along the Sinepuxent Bay. They were salty and taste better than the Chesapeake oysters. The Atlantic Ocean flows directly into that waterway. 🦜
