I have the honor of reconnecting with Dr. Mindy Pelz today.
Dr. Mindy and I answer many of the questions women have sent in about nutrition, navigating fasting, electrolytes, and estrogen and progesterone-promoting foods. We discuss perimenopause, PMDD and hormonal fluctuations, carbohydrates, hormesis, the parasympathetic nervous system, and magnesium.
We get into the impact of fasting on the liver, changes in our cycle, and the need for liver and gallbladder support. We also answer several questions about troubleshooting and talk about Dr. Mindy’s new book, Fast Like a Girl.
IN THIS EPISODE YOU WILL LEARN:
    - Should fermented foods (sauerkraut) be eaten first or at the end of a meal?
    - When indulging in something sweet from time to time, is it better to use organic sugar or honey than agave? Or is pure stevia preferable?
    - Which foods are beneficial for progesterone production?
    - Is there a way to prevent cravings for salty or sweet snacks after dinner?
    - Some tips to make losing five to ten pounds a bit easier.
    - Are products with zero carbs and zero sugars suitable for fasting if they have a sweet taste?

I worry about foods for thyroid. So confusing. People say no flax it has estrogen and blocks thyroid, no almonds messes up thyroid. No kale or brocoli but i do consume kale. Im just so confused.

Eric Berg has a good video on sweetners and this topic, mentioning the research and that fructose, which most Agave Syrups are at least 50% of, and which is worse than sugar metabolically

I will be turning 41 in January and I’m in the beginning stages of perimenopause and my allopathic doctor said I’m still too early to be thinking about perimenopause/menopause. And I don’t think I’m being treated correctly with my thyroid.

Find a different doctor and keep looking until you find one who thinks along the same line as you do.
      Listen to your intuition!
I think you posted this for confirmation, and I’m giving you advice I wish I had been given twenty years ago.

I’m 20+ years postmenopausal; I have been on hormone replacement therapy for longer than that, and I’m very happy with my bioidentical hormones. But your material all seems to apply to younger women.
Please provide more information on carb consumption and fasting for older women (I’m 73, and I work out twice a week with weights, with a trainer. I also take the free classes at my health club for seniors.)
I fasted once in my early twenties and it gave me a horrible headache. I’ve never missed a meal since. I was ignorant and unprepared. I would like to try again for health reasons but I want to start slow. I’ve tried just eating breakfast late but that did no good. But the people who advocate fasting have too much enthusiasm for extreme fasting. I am a singer and have two 2-hr sessions with my voice coach. I don’t even want to consider fasting on a day I sing or workout, or even the day after a workout, because I want to build muscle. Can you give me some advice that I can actually follow. And I hope you won’t just say, you can fast like a man. I don’t believe that for a minute! I have thyroid issues and high stress. I need some womanly wisdom here. I always had very regular periods and the moon was always important for me. Please create more content for postmenopausal women.

Take electrolytes and add a little bit Himalayan salt to your water in the morning and this should fix the headache/light headed feeling from intermittent fasting.

OK, I must weigh in on semaglutide. I used it for 3-1/2 months. I was getting desperate to lose 30 lb fast to lower my blood pressure without meds. It did not work out as planned; I lost only about 13 lb before I realized that I was not going to have enough energy to sing my upcoming Eastertide concert. I did not experience active nausea, but the idea of food was not pleasant. I realized that 20 units of semaglutide was not consistent with my life plans to gain muscle and stay strong. It was very weakening. It destroyed the positive relationship I had with food. I understand doctors are beginning to prescribe it for children and teenagers. If I knew someone who was contemplating this for their children, I would beg them with tears NOT to do this. Cultivate a HEALTHY relationship with food in your children. I think this diet med is going to lead to eating disorders. The side effects can be devastating: bowel problems, sure, but RASHES. Itchy intolerable rashes completely resistant to any treatment. Not everyone who takes semaglutide will get them, but if you get them you will not be able to get rid of them until you stop the semaglutide. It’s completely anti-nature. Keto or carnivore is much better and healthier. I guarantee no one is ever putting me on a diet med of any sort, ever. If only I had heard about these methods sooner. I got on a low-carb meat-based diet about 6-7 weeks ago, and I have so much more strength and energy! I did have to get on a bp med, but Carvedilol is tolerable and a low dose has my doctors pretty happy. The diet is lowering it even more. Oh, BTW, everyone who quits semaglutide gains the weight back and then some! The four extra pounds I had gained disappeared in 2 wks on a low-carb diet!

You might look into plasma exchange. It’s much mire effective in a shorter period of time, than chelation. But if you test high in lead or mercury, your insurance might (note I say MIGHT) cover part of the cost for chelation. For sure plasma exchange will come out of your own pocket. My husband and I are getting ready for a urine-collection that will show those toxins plus Roundup, fluoride (in Chicago its in the water) and hundreds of others. We will most likely do at least three rounds of plasma exchange.

I often need to use cough drops during my fasting window (though my symptoms have been getting better since starting fasting) and am wondering if a drop sweetened with stevia is a better option than aspartame? I was already using sugar free drops because the sugar gives me heartburn. I just don’t want to spike blood sugar during fasting hours if I can help it.
