  • Wired doorbells may be losing popularity to wireless styles or camera style bells, but they can still work for years to come with a little maintenance. In this video I'll explain how wired doorbells work, how to replace the exterior button, and how to check for other problems with the transformer or ringer if need be.

Nice basic breakdown and explanation of the system components and a simpler solution to the problem/s than most of us would suspect.

Hey John, great video. You covered all the bases. I've dealt with each component over the years. The only one I haven't replaced is the transformer, or the wires. I have dealt with some very old switch button wires in a house built in 1950. The wires can get brittle over time and as the striped end for the switch button screw breaks, the wires coming out get shorter and shorter. It may have the wire conductor type used back then. I had to twist on and insulate a short extension wire for one of them.

Yes, the wires do tend to get sorter as time goes by! Ideally the original installer leaves an extra loop of wire inside the wall for the future.

My Boxer mix pup LOVED this video. Each time you tested the doorbell, he ran to the door. & yes, maybe I replayed the “tests”, several times - does that make me a bad person? …. 😊
